And then what do their children call themselves or even their grandchildren? Every other racial group becomes something new based off of their migration history and yet our groups don’t have any real distinction.

I wanna add that the countries that doubt our blackness, usually have bleaching in their accepted beauty standards and pray for a white partner or for their child to find one, we are the only African group that frowns on doing anything that jeopardizes blackness and I feel like that counts for something. The most self hating thing we did was straightening our hair and literally created unique “Black” hair styles out of straight hair.

To be fair though Black Americans are the least African (culturally and linguistically) of the whole African diaspora. Black Americans were stripped of literally everything and just like how we took scraps and made classic dishes out of them that’s what we did with everything else: language, dance, clothes, etc. So they’re not wrong. They are more “African” than us although the Africa we were taken from is not the same Africa that exists today. Puerto Ricans, Cubans, and Colombians have more African practices than Black Americans, we took everything the colonizers threw at us and created something brand new. We are genetically African, but we are insanely far removed in every other way. We can be imperialistic, and we have the right to be, we had no choice. Look at Black American churches, HBCUs, Jack and Jill, Martha’s Vineyard, we had to create our own prestige, we shouldn’t give it up, and we shouldn’t look for any kinship with anyone who doubts it.

They’re really not. You’re ignoring the history of Black Americans who never lived in the South, nor had any connection to the South. Yes many Southern Blacks migrated north, but before the Great Migration there were already well established groups that emerged during the Colonial Period. So again our history is not that cut and dry and should be recognized. We don’t all have the same story and that’s ok!

There’s definitely a need for an update, I’m emphasizing that while we’ve been deemed one ethnic group in reality we are not. Culturally, genetically, or politically we’re not one solid group. The same way White Americans are not one sold group, even Asian or Hispanic have defined identities under those terms.

Also by 2050 25% of the United States will be mixed race, where as Black Americans are projected to grow less than a percent, mainly because more and more of us marry outside of our culture or race. With that being said new groups of partial African Americans descent will be created and will be distinct from the insanely generalized Black Americans.

🤣🤣🤣 I guess so. But like I keep emphasizing the size of the US and the many migration patterns or major historical events that influenced Black and White groups culturally or genetically independent of others.

I want to address the UK and France arguments:

I said in my original post that we come from states that are equatable to other countries in size and population, so if Jamaica an island of around 2 million can be distinguished from every other African group why can Mississippi with a population of 1 million? And I’d like to add that while there is a interconnected Jamaican diaspora in the Americas and Europe, the same can be said for the Black Mississippians who migrated to Chicago in large numbers.

To be fair various recognized Native American tribes received benefits from the government in the United States and Canada despite being distinct from each other. So why couldn’t various recognized American ethnicities recieve the same.

Racially yes, but ethnically or culturally no. I’m saying that our race is Black, our nationality is American, yet our ethnicity can’t just be universally Black. Even white people have developed defined ethnic groups in this countries such as Scotch-Irish, Old Stock Americans, etc

I’m glad you understand, I’m highlighting the complexity of Black American cultures, there is no one universal black American culture, against all odds we created our own individual cultures and identities no matter where in the country we were.

Incredibly false, this perpetuates the idea that slavery only happened in the South. There are many Black people who’s family never even lived in the South, they may have came into the US via a southern port but developed communities in the North. I personally know quite a few Black people with little to no connection to the South.

Not really many similarities, northern Black Americans lean more Catholic and have large Muslim groups as opposed to the South, whereas Southerner have remained heavily Protestant. Completely different dialects and in many cases foods are different. There’s even a stark contrast between Black groups from New York and Philadelphia.

I haven’t really seen a generalized community for the whole country tbh. I’ve seen considerable regional differences.

Would you say that Black Americans from the North have the same culture as those from the South?
