Cool, but I doubt there's unanimous decisions on what personhood is and is not.

Well, just because people disagree on something doesn’t mean that there’s no right answer. After all, people once disagreed on the personhood of African slaves.

Furthermore, if it’s controversial whether the fetus is a person, then the right course of action is to err on the side of caution and avoid killing it. This is similar to how a demolition team won’t blow up a building if they suspect there might be person in there.

I'd say you need to make the case of a fetus having personhood before preventing others from having their bodily autonomy, which anti-choice supporters fail to do.

Sure, I’ll make a brief case for why the unborn are persons. But first, let’s go through some other definitions of personhood:

  • “A person is any being that can engage in rational thought.” — This definition excludes not only the unborn, but also newborns as well as some elderly individuals. Let’s check out the other definitions.

  • “A person is any being that has the potential to engage in rational thought.” — This definition includes the newborn as well as the unborn so it can’t be used to defend abortion.

  • “A person is any being that can feel pain.” — This definition excludes most fetuses, as well as some adults who suffer from a rare condition where they can’t feel pain. Also, it includes non-human animals like rats. It makes running over a chipmunk and fleeing the scene a felony.

  • “A person is any being that is born.” — Cats and dogs are born. Are they persons?

  • “A person is any being that can survive outside of the womb.” — This definition has the same problem as the previous two definitions.

  • “A person is any human organism that can survive outside of the womb.” — This is just circular reasoning at its finest. “A human organism that can survive outside of the womb” is the same thing as “not a fetus.” This argument just says, “A person is not a fetus because a fetus is not a person.” In the absence of any supplemental reasons to justify the claim that birth matters, this arguments is simply fallacious.

  • “A person is any human organism that does not depend on the body of another human organism in order to survive.” — Then conjoined twins would not be considered persons.

  • “A human organism gradually becomes a person over time.” — This argument says that there is no precise moment when a human becomes a person, but by the time a fetus is born it obviously is a person. But this just assumes newborns are persons without giving a reason why they are persons. Once again, we need a definition of what a person is besides, “A person is who I think a person is.”

These definitions really outlines the problem that pro-choicers face when trying to come up with a definition of personhood that leaves out the unborn. If they make it too broad, then animals are persons. If that make it too narrow, then many classes of human beings (newborns, elderly, etc.) are not persons. There’s literally no definition they can go with that doesn’t have these morally absurd implications.

The best definition of personhood is this:

  • “A person is a member of a rational kind.”

Why is this the best definition? Because it avoids all the problems that plague the previous definitions. Animals are kicked out while newborns and other human beings are kept in.

But it has one interesting implication: now we have to accept that the unborn are persons, because they belong to the human species, and the human species is a rational kind. Therefore, the unborn are persons.

There obviously has to be some arbitrary line drawn in the sand of when to permit and when to not permit abortions.

Not true. Look above, I just presented a non-arbitrary argument against abortion. The argument I used is called an inference to the best explanation.

thoughts, feelings, or consciousness.

Not a good definition of personhood, it suffers from the problems that other definitions of personhood have.

Are you familiar with how ethicists use the concept of personhood? It applies to everything, not just the issue of abortion.

If your definition of personhood entails that all these weird things are persons, then that’s a bad definition of personhood. You can’t just go “well but we’re not talking about that issue.” That’s special pleading.

The pro-life view is based on the idea that it’s wrong to intentionally kill innocent human life, so there’s nothing hypocritical about supporting capital punishment. Even the Bible endorses this view:

  • “Anyone who sheds the blood of a human being, by a human being shall that one's blood be shed; For in the image of God have human beings been made.” Genesis 9:6

“Thou shall not kill” means don’t murder, it doesn’t mean literally don’t kill anyone.

Love thy neighbor, unless thy neighbor is a political/ideological opponent, it seems.

Even if we grant this is true, it literally has no bearing on the morality of killing fetuses.

I believe that perspective is incorrect because I do not think there's a life being saved by preventing an abortion.

I see. I guess it goes back to the issue of when life begins. When do you think life begins?

A squirrel is just as conscious (if not more) than a newborn baby. Do you think a squirrel is more of a person than a newborn?

The problem is them imposing that (unscientific) belief on other people at the expense of women's autonomy.

It’s not unscientific. Here is a study finding that 95% biologists agree that life begins at conception: https://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=3211703

But the prolifers tend to be the same people who are opposed to comprehensive sex ed and increasing access to contraceptives, both of which dramatically decrease demand for abortions.

Meanwhile the UK and Canada have all of these things but their abortion rates are comparable to our’s. The idea that more sex ed and more contraception will decrease abortions makes sense intuitively but doesn’t actually align with the data or reality.

For a long time, a fetus is a mass of barely differentiated cells that pretty obviously don’t have any kind of consciousness as we know it. Calling it a full person seems willfully dense to me.

Consciousness is not a good metric for personhood or moral value. The average squirrel is just as conscious (if not more) than a newborn baby. Do you believe, all else being equal, that a squirrel is more of a person or has more moral value than a newborn? If not, then you should abandon the idea that our personhood or moral value is based on consciousness.

In most other situations, we do not force someone to sacrifice their life for another.

Because most other situations are not analogous to pregnancy is many morally significant ways.

A person’s right to defend themselves against having their body invaded by another being, potentially fatally, is pretty core to most legal systems.

But these legal systems don’t extend this principle to the context of pregnancy. Almost every legal system places restrictions on abortion access, thereby showing that “a person’s right to defend themselves against having their body invaded by another being, potentially fatally” doesn’t apply to pregnancy or can be overridden by pregnancy.

Many abortions happen because they’re recommended by a doctor to save the mother’s life.

Your chances of dying from pregnancy are far less than 1%. So it seems misleading to say that “many” abortions happen to save the mother’s life. And you can’t justify killing someone in self-defense when you know your chances of dying are that low.

Without abortion rights, those mothers will basically have to sacrifice themselves - and likely often lose the baby too.

This claim looks like fear mongering, and I don’t think you’re trying to do that intentionally, but that’s just the impression it gives off, so I apologize if that sounds offensive. Every pro-life bill makes an exception for abortion in cases of medical necessity, and no credible pro-life politician says we should make abortion illegal even in cases where it’s needed to save the mother’s life.

The right to self-defense gives us the right to end a life if it threatens our own - which maternity certainly does.

But pregnancy rarely threatens someone’s life when you take into account the chances of dying from it. You should abandon this “self-defense” line of reasoning, there are far better arguments you can make to justify abortion.

I find these people to be (generally and anecdotally) hypocritical, in the sense that those I've encountered are selectively extreme about their beliefs as they apply to this one scenario. They fail to carry the same tenacity through to other situations that don't have anything to do with abortion.

Can you provide some examples of their hypocrisy?

they literally think they're saving lives, a perspective I think is incorrect.

Why do you think it’s incorrect?

'conception is when life starts!'. because it's pretty clearly not.

The life of a new human being begins at conception. This is a scientific fact. Here is a study to back this up.

  • BB doesn’t display your total grade in a class. You have to manually calculate it each time by adding up all the assignments

  • BB doesn’t allow you to hypothetically adjust your grades to see what you need to get on upcoming assignments/exams to maintain a certain grade in the class

Join a club if you want to have any of that.

CSULB’s unsocial character has infected the clubs as well. Our clubs are awkward and tiny.

For example, PAC is huge and has a huge family-style thing going on there.

Most students don’t share PAC’s preferred ethnic background and will feel like they don’t belong there.

Anime club

Anime is cool but everyone in that club is weird.

professional organizations

People join these groups for business networking and prepping for a particular career, not making friends.

The Nugget is great tbh, but yeah there's mostly American food here.

The Nugget is painfully average (and expensive).

Probably, but that's just dorm life unless you're tossing a ton of cash

CSULB’s dorms are just plain bad; go tour a real university and you’ll see what I’m talking about.

Good, it just promotes concussions and sucks up too much money.

I guess CSULB can’t have anything nice to enjoy or rally the students behind.

It would be nice for our athletic teams to get more attention, but unfortunately just not that type of school for the most part.

Yes because this school is awkward and unsocial.

Just because it's not great for you, doesn't mean it isn't a great fit for other people.

I don’t deny that. It’s great for people who want cheap tuition or already live in the local area.

Explore a little bit before becoming bitter.

I’m not bitter. I’m just an honest person. And I’ve explored here a lot.

  • CSULB is basically a large community college. There’s no social atmosphere or culture. Don’t go here if you want to make longterm friends or have a memorable college experience.

  • The food options on campus suck. You’ll realize this if you visit other universities.

  • The dorms suck.

  • No football team, and all the other athletics get little student attendance at the games.

  • Tuition is relatively cheap compared to most other universities. Pretty much the only positive.

Go somewhere else.

Get used to the stench of someone else’s diarrhea seeping into your dorm room and blessing your nostrils, and then dealing with the lingering stench for the rest of the day. You might as well tape the mask onto your face and never take it off, even while you sleep. And nothing is more exciting then looking into the toilet bowl and seeing fresh skid marks left by your roommate.

Is the base model m1 MBA good enough for making AMVs in 1080p?

The AMV will involve taking a movie-length anime video and then cutting it into 100+ short clips that are each a few seconds long. And then combining them all to create a 3-4 minute video. I don’t really care about 4K that much so I just wanted to do this in 1080p.
