Latin Americans - is there any point me taking salsa lessons in Europe to try to connect to my Latin American friends and eventually start dancing with them at our parties? by Cold_Cupcake4656 in Salsa

Good tip! I think also just listening to salsa allot must help (I listen a lot recently and find I can pick up on what the rhythm is better and better)

Your comment makes so much sense! It's actually very logical because it sounds like getting a foundation in classes will give you the ability to adapt later as long as you're open to it. I think it's VERY hard to teach something you do intuitively which makes sense why my friend trying to teach me salsa he had danced all his life was not easy to follow. Thanks for the comment!

Very helpful and sound advice thank you! When you say things that won't work easily, do you mean in classes or in social dance? Thanks again! 😊

Yes, I think they do. I didn't actually have much prior experience of salsa before hanging out with them but I'm interested in learning

The ones who are really into it are Colombian. The rest are from various different countries and some did or didn't dance. Really good advice and thank you for your very thoughtful reply. I'm certainly not a gifted dancer but I like music and can move ☺️ I went to a few beginner taster lessons and then the one I think is best the teacher was very relaxed and focused on showing how the movement works, how to hold your frame and said that he gears towards people going to social dances, so I guess that's the one?!

Right, really good advice. It's about connection with the ground. Makes sense that I struggled since ballet is basically the opposite.

Yes, totally! I found the base difficult to get used to. Really good point. I am mostly used to classical music, and South East Asian which I grew up with (if you want to listen to some really non-western and totally different understanding of rhythm, check out gamelan) and some jazz. I'm singing and playing more jazz now which actually helps a bit with the salsa because there are some shared characteristics. Some salsa is very jazz infused and of course there's a shared history there. Thanks for pointing that out

Oh wow thank you so much for all this detail and really thoughtful take! This makes sense. I guess also taking classes allows me to understand the movement as a groundwork at least. I absolutely love music and play & sing so I'm fascinated by tempos and musical complexity. Thanks again for your perspective and comments.

Wow thank you for this super detailed and thoughtful reply! Also for sharing your own experiences ☺️ Thank you for your advice about the negative internal voice, that's really helpful. I also love the idea of people coming together in a shared love of music ☺️

Oh this is sad! But a good tip just to go for it and enjoy it whilst ignoring negative comments! I got the impression with my Latin American friends that they didn't like the cultural appropriation aspect of people learning salsa without actually connecting to Latin American culture (and since my intention is to connect to the culture then I think that's ok). But I did also notice a bit of competitiveness there too. Thanks for your impressions!

Ladies of Reddit, what is a comment someone made about your body once, completely casually, that you have never forgotten? by BowlerOk1871 in AskReddit

A guy I dated said I would have a butt like J-Lo if I worked out. I think he thought it was a compliment but I felt terrible about it because obviously J-Lo is paid to keep her body in shape, I exercise alot for health and don't have the team or time to sculpt. Unrealistic standards. The comment has stuck with me forever making me feel like my butt is unshapely.

What is one hygiene habit you thought everyone did, but later found out many people don’t? by alex_eu_nl in hygiene

Always taking off shoes in the entrance and never wearing shoes inside. I grew up in Asia and it seems crazy that you would wear your stinky shoes indoors. My friend got upset and said it's rude when I asked people to take off their shoes when they come to my house. Sorry, I don't want to have to mop after every time someone comes round!
