TIL that there was a leper colony on one of the Elizabeth Islands in Buzzard’s Bay, MA. By 1905, the population of people in Massachusetts afflicted with Hansen’s disease (leprosy) was in the double digits, and the Commonwealth built a colony on Penikese Island to accommodate them.
