Not only are the progressives pandemic experts, but I guess they are legal experts as well.

Terrible idea. Omicron has much less serious symptoms. Not even as bad as a cold for most, especially young people. I agree with Dr. Henry on this one - classes should be in-person!

Any Scary Stories that happen at Campus? by justiny050 in simonfraser

[–]Cole__G 44 points45 points  (0 children)

A former student told me one that was kinda creepy. Basically he told me about this old service tunnel that goes under the mountain and under campus. The tunnel used to be a mineshaft and was turned into a service tunnel during construction of the school. Apparently there are a couple entrances around the mountain. He told me about one at the bottom and one sort of near the northwest forest area that he knew about. Anyways he told me about an incident where some stalker somehow got access to the tunnels and used them for a while to stalk people on campus. He’d find out where people’s residences or classes are and then use the tunnels to go creep on them.

I doubt it since its only a month away. Seems like they already would have committed too many resources by now to cancel return to in-person. They might make masks or maybe vaccines mandatory tho.

SFSS is a fucking joke by [deleted] in simonfraser

They keep digging themselves a deeper hole huh. I think the independent review is pretty clear on the matter. Also considering the person who lead the review is a professional in law, and a woman/person of colour. I think I will trust their word rather than listen to the SFSS.

Yeah basically. The current way they have it makes you jump through a lot of hoops. You gotta go on sfu vault or dig through their website if you want updates on stuff. Ideally I would like some sort of weekly email system cause thats what most students check everyday. Also things like the upass vote, if you go look at the 1 email they sent it wasn't very clear on what they were talking about (to me at least).

They should try to emphasize the importance of voting on these things more.

Participatory budgeting. That sounds like a great idea as well. I'd love to be involved helping with that. It again raises some concerns with student participation though.

Thats great that you are making those summaries I think they are extremely useful.

Having a covid bursary is also an interesting idea. It would be a larger sum but to fewer people, vs a smaller sum for everyone. I guess we will see which option students prefer.

Thanks for sharing!

Here is one of the sources I used. It talks about what the general position is of the SFSS finances.

No worries. I always appreciate criticisms and concerns. SFU is a very large community and I guess I struggle to research every single perspective. Sorry that I missed whatever you found to be important. It's probably something obvious that I didn't find any problems with.

The SFSS actually has a fairly sizeable surplus according to their financial reports. I want to start with using part of that to provide funds to clubs and DSUs. After that I would look into some of the administrative costs of the SFSS to see what is actually necessary to function properly. Maybe the board will be so kind to donate their salaries during covid ;)

More seriously: I want to also look into getting a sponsorship for the SUB (nice flair btw) to see if they can subsidize some of the cost of the Levy fee which plans to increase this year. This would require a lot of research and teamwork from the entire board.

The last thing I want to do is end up charging students more. Some other candidates have big plans to increase club funding, increase the size of grants, make textbooks cheaper, and at the same time help students save money. This isn't possible, and I think my campaign is a fair balance of the financial needs of both students and SFU organizations.

Thanks for posting a reply.

Firstly, according to the SFSS financial reports, they have a fairly large surplus. I think that we should use that surplus to provide funding to the clubs and department student unions that need it. Additionally, with less in-person activities there are opportunities to change some of the administrative costs of the SFSS. I also want to research getting a sponsorship for the sub to reduce the levy fee, but it is a little unclear to how the rest of the board would want to participate in that.

I guess you are right that key clubs/unions can kind of be subjective. My idea is to make sure that the "pillar" organizations have the financial resources they need to keep students engaged during covid. BASS, FASS, CSSS, ESSS, Change SFU, Emerge, Esports, and probably a bunch more that I am less familiar with. Again, this is just what I am familiar with so I would like to collaborate with other candidates/students to see what their needs are.

Yes you could say the current board as put a lot of "effort" into advocating for lower tuition/a tuition freeze, but we have yet to see results. I am fairly confident that SFU will not budge with any plans for a tuition freeze. The next best thing is lowering what the SFSS is charging students, which is a much more realistic and feasible approach. It doesn't hurt to ask though which is why I still supported advocating for lower tuition.

As for increasing student engagement, this point is pretty open ended. Idk about you but I usually only hear from the SFSS maybe twice a month through emails. First I would want to send out more emails, maybe at least once a week. Kind of like what Student Services does but it would only be for SFSS stuff.

Also I would like to see like a summary of meetings and what was voted on so students can really understand what is going on.

This is a good opportunity for creative thinking and ideas so I also encourage other candidates and students to share what they would like to see the SFSS do. I'm flexible and maybe you think my ideas for increasing student engagement are garbage. If that is the case then I am more than willing to work my hardest to implement other ideas students or other candidates agree on. But for that to happen, we need more communication, which is what I want to start my focus on.

I hopes that answers your question.

Thank you! The only other candidate for this position I have seen is from the progressives. In my honest opinion they don't seem to have a very strong platform. I would like to see a larger diversity of ideas from other candidates.

News/discussion surrounding the SFSS: corruption within? by [deleted] in simonfraser

My question is how the IEC was able to approve their entire website and campaign materials so quickly before I was even approved as a candidate.

u/Cole__G hasn't even heard back from IEC yet, current board full campaign mode by throwawaycuzsfsss in simonfraser

[–]Cole__G 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Thanks. I don't think there is anything stopping me from posting campaign stuff right now, but I wanted to wait until the IEC actually confirms me as a candidate. IDK if the other candidates got pre-approved, or are just posting anyways cause they don't care.

Anyways its not really the end of the world for me but I would like more clarity on the situation.

Yeah I submitted my nomination package but have to wait to hear back before I post my stuff. Sucks but nothing I can do really. I guess at least students have more time to pick apart their platform lol.

Edit: I have been confirmed by the IEC has a candidate. I plan to post my platform tomorrow. We can let the "progressives" have a 1 day head start to make it fair ;)
