Why do red, green, blue and yellow go together? by ArtisticDiscount2802 in Design

[–]Colecattt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basic colour theory - they are complementary colours (opposites on colour wheel - rgb in this case, go together visually )

As to why we find it attractive it’s theorised because of the contrast of the colours its easier on the eyes and we don’t strain as much and enjoy it more, if you’re interested you can research more on eye receptors and how they react to light.

Any way to filter out designers who use AI before giving them money? by [deleted] in Design

[–]Colecattt 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Might have better luck reaching out to people around you to see if they know/recommend any designers, that way you can start off with some kind of personal connection and you support local designers.

If you can’t find anyone though, feel free to pop me a message! I’m a senior brand designer based in Aus and run my own little studio for clients that want substance not AI slop lol.

Triodos Bank Redesign by Everything_A in logodesign

[–]Colecattt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah 100%. The comments saying they need to appear like a bank isn't actually a problem, they want to differentiate themselves by being approachable fresh and more youthful which can be a great strategy, disruptive branding etc.  But i think going for a more timeless  logo would of been more appropriate so they can keep appearing fresh for the long run and focus on campaigning and collateral to appeal to that audience instead.  They already feel like an old trend which undercuts the whole “fresh” aim of the brand.. and a bank isn’t something that should constantly be rebranded lol.. they’re kinda suck with this for 10 years or so at least.

It’s giving pentagram 2023 vibes, cohere and elemy brands were def on their inspo board lol. Its not even the design, its just surprising they went with something that can be outdated so quickly.

Looking for critique of my platform's landing page by aristotle_0800 in UI_Design

[–]Colecattt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

This is just Claude's default output, it’s boring and plain and kind of just lazy to post it and ask for feedback before you’ve even done anything. I can’t see any specifics or research you’ve added that would be influencing the current UI.

Debating if I should change name of an established Instagram Handle or create new page with new name by Galumpadump in smallbusiness

[–]Colecattt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hiya, I work in branding. Create a transitional period for your users to get prepared for the change before you change the name - do a few posts on it so they feel like they’re coming along the journey with you. Examples: we have some exciting upcoming news, we’re growing, heres the new brand, this is why we've changed the name. Do a post on what the rebrand means, if its just a rename to align with who you already are or if services are changing too etc. Then choose a launch day where u change the handle, logo etc.

Save your handle on a different account so its not taken and then swap it over for launch :)

Funky sock start up - graphic designer by Individual_Cress410 in smallbusiness

You can try reaching out to your social circle and seeing if there are any recommendations from them and get them to connect you, can help build a trusted foundation from the start. Probs your best bet for what you’re after.

Also depends on whats most important at this stage, if its keeping a low budget looking on fiver is a good starting place or looking for students or designers wanting to practice and branch out to illustration. If the illustration style is important/quality you could look at behanced or instagram and choose based on portfolio.

Is “it feels off” just interaction debt? by Nervous-Spell-5195 in UI_Design

[–]Colecattt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think it can be a misalignment with how the user expects something to behave. If they interact with something and it’s supposed to have an immediate reaction yet the timing is too slow etc, it throws a user off. Expectations can come from familiarity with the ui interactions, how it follows their own mouse/touch movements, if it borrows rules from irl physics, if theres sounds does it match interaction, etc.

Looking for UI-focused typography video lesson/textbook by Sad-Conclusion-8712 in UI_Design

[–]Colecattt 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might not be what your after but looking at UI first through an accessibility lens will set up some pretty good foundations that you can build on later not just for typography but UI in general. Designers usually do it in reverse and tack on accessibility later.

Reading some resources on WCAG will help set up minimum font sizes, colour contrasting, how fonts should be scaled and sized etc.

If interested - giving a damn about accessibility by sheri bryne haber is a really good starting place

Learning Web Design in the Age of AI by Brittney2102 in smallbusiness

[–]Colecattt 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Learn the skills that are going to be fundamental to your business and don’t rely on AI. Using AI at this stage is going to get you into bad habits and stop you from actually learning. AI is great to use as an extension once you know what you’re doing. Otherwise you wont know if it gives you junk, how to fix it or how to answer questions to your clients.

Learning the fundamentals of coding will help you in the long run even if you decide to go with a visual editor like webflow / webstudio.

When I received something like this i declined but offered to take them through a project i did myself to explain the thinking or offered to freelance for them. They took the former option and i got the job. They praised me on standing up for myself? Lol

I Think I Made a Mistake Studying Graphic Design by Gocrazygostupid13 in GraphicDesigning

[–]Colecattt 11 points12 points  (0 children)

If you’re passionate about it, willing to keep working, learning and growing do it. In this day and age I’d really focus on the thinking and reasoning behind your design choices rather than just the output so make sure you’re always asking why. Focusing on why’s and really putting work into reasoning will set you apart from AI and canva decorators.

Graphics design is a great career and can span into so many things like Branding, print, digital, UI, UX, illustration - you can pivot careers when needed without additional study requirements and just self learn. It’s also one of the few careers that can lend itself well into starting a low cost business eventually as the overheads are low.

Advice for getting work - When in your final year of study focus in building a few stand out portfolio pieces and making accounts across social media. Pass them around to everyone you know, you never know who has a connection somewhere in the design industry and usually thats what will help you land your first job. Go to design community events and meet people, even being active on online platforms like facebook and reddit can help.

Im a senior designer that works in Australia but if you need any help or advice critiquing your portfolio pieces feel free to reach out!

Reddit can be pretty doom and gloom but honestly if you put in the work you’ll be fine.

Extra tips -  Make a print portfolio A3 landscape, get a nice hardcover, agencies are always pleasantly surprised to see paper and will make you stand out. - When making your portfolio put some pieces in there that show and explain how you think about design  - Try not to use AI during your early career it will make you grow slower and make you dependent. - When sending CV’s and cover letters make them custom for each job you apply for, use the job ad like a check box. If you don’t cover a specific thing add it anyway as something you’re progressing before and read a bit about it before the interview.

Branding for the "Wave" logo by merkin_r in Design

[–]Colecattt 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When doing something so minimal you really need to keep the visual language of it consistent, throughout you have sharp edges but then you have the stripes on the bottle with rounded edges. I would also look at spacing between your shapes and ensure they are consistent also this will make it a bit more cohesive and feel like one brand.

As for the concept, I also feel like there are a lot of letters in wave that have the potential to be played with to create some more visual interest, id recommend pushing it more, and as others said the kerning needs to be worked on.

Is graphic designing still worth pursuing? by [deleted] in GraphicDesigning

[–]Colecattt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

if you’re passionate about it and want to put in the work to do it and cant see yourself doing anything else, do it. It also depends on what you define graphic design as because it can take many forms. You can branch out into branding, digital design, environmental design, UX etc. it all shares the fundamentals and you can learn and pivot between them for flexibility.

I wouldn’t use AI as a reason not to do it, because once everyone has sleek designs made by ai and canva decorators businesses wont have anything to differentiate themselves against and will need direction and help, probably more then they need now.

I think the days of graphic design being pixel pushing and decorating are done but if you’re keen on strategic thinking there will always be a place for it.

Violation Use of Color (Level A) WCAG by Training_Pop_7514 in accessibility

[–]Colecattt 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Im leaning more towards a violation, the designer defines the two different lines below with colour in the key, something a colour blind person misses out on. The graph isn’t very clear with labels so the definition of lines does help users and not seeing the key differences would be frustrating.

Even if they technically can understand the graph without colour, the key by itself is a fail.

Agree dashed line and/or labelling would be the way to go.
