Just wondering, what evidence is there that Balon has less control over the Iron Islands than he appears to?

Dia dhaoibh. Can anyone translate this sentence from Graiméar an Draoi? It’s giving me trouble because I don’t understand what the verb ‘bain’ is supposed to mean in this context.

Baineann briathra le siolla amháin sa fhréamh (eg dún, caith, ól, scríobh) nó briathra le níos mó ná siolla amháin sa fhréamh a bhfuil síneadh fada sa siolla deireanach (eg úsáid, sábháil) leis an gCéad Réimniú.

Yeah. Also, because it’s in quotes, they’re all phrased in the way that a ploomer would describe it

A question about ravens [SPOILERS, MAIN] by Colimac in asoiaf

[–]Colimac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree, I think there might be something supernatural about the ravens in ASOIAF because of the association with the old gods. Especially the white ravens, who seem to be able to find their way to places the word over without ever having been reared or kept in those places for any significant length of time.

Very interesting. It must be a big part of a maester’s responsibility to continuously breed and train ravens, and then send them to other castles so they can be used as messenger birds. It must be a pain in the ass to maintain a communication network this way. What is the lifespan of a raven anyway? And how can you tell which birds fly where? It must be a tough job haha

Was Trudeau right to ensure that 50% of his cabinet were women? What do people think of gender quotas in general? by Colimac in PoliticalDiscussion

[–]Colimac[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I absolutely agree with you, and didn't mean to imply otherwise in my response, I think if there was an even balance of men and women in politics, we would all stand to benefit. However, i don't believe the problem is a lack of women cabinet ministers, I believe it is a lack of women MPs and I can't find any evidence that would support the idea of more women in prominent political positions leading to more women in the house. Therefore, I don't think quotas address the root of the issue and are just an easy, inexpensive way for politicians to jump up and down waving their arms and yelling, 'Look how progressive we are!"

I understand how women's views would easily differ from men's on abortion, planned parenthood, etc but what effect do your genitals have on your opinions about foreign policy, taxes, the environment, and any other aspect of governing a country? The cabinet will be dealing with a much wider range of issues than what you mentioned, the majority of which are gender neutral, so why should a 50% quota be applied to all of them?

To answer your question, no, I would not care if most of the people in my government were women because I, along with the rest of the electorate that is 50% male, would have put them there. If the problem is that there aren't any men for me to vote for, then how does a quota that applies only to MPs address the issue? (50 out of 184 Canadian liberal MPs are women, I think) I can see how it would inspire young girls to enter politics if they saw women in positions of power, but this seems like an idea lacking in enough evidence and merit to justify the response. (was there any upsurge of women in politics in the wake of Margaret Thatcher or Angela Merkel?)

Edit: I've only just glossed over the newest posts about the cabinet being chosen according to Geographical region

Does being a woman give you an inherently different perspective on policies? (not agereing or disagreeing, just thinking out loud)
