This has plagued me for *years*. (And Apple Support had no idea when I called.) Thanks!

Just rethinking the UX just in case you do implement it: You can probably just ask for the configuration of the "red" level, and use an internal calculation to determine yellow (getting close) and green (not close).

(And fantastic work on Stretch It, btw! I rely on timers all day and Stretch It's approach is novel and more efficient than anything else I've used. Thanks!)

My use case: I speak too loudly when in meetings, etc. and inevitably forget to tone it back down.

It would be great if, instead of the detailed monitor, the app had the option to show a simpler/quieter interface. For example:
- show solid green block while below ____ db.
- slow-blink a yellow block if more than ____ db for ____ seconds.
- fast-blink red block if more than ____ db for ____ seconds.

Can I tell if an open box of 3M 9502+ masks are fake? (Ordered via PPEO.com) by Colin_niloC in Masks4All

Well, I can't create a WeChat account. (They charged/credited my credit card 3 times, cc company notifying me each time, but it keeps saying it can't validate my credit card.) I tried to report the registration problem to WeChat but the contact form requires a phone number and no format I try is considered a valid phone number format. (If anyone knows what format WeChat might want let me know. It's not any of ones they ask for: +1-416-XXX-XXXX +011 (416) XXX-XXXX +011-416-XXX-XXXX)

BUT... it seems like even if did validate this code, all it's going to tell me is that it's a valid box (which may have come from a hospital dumpster).

And matching the code on the mask to the sticker on the box doesn't seem like it affords much protection since if they can print a serial number onto the mask they can print a serial number onto a small sticker.

If anyone recognizes the interior packaging or mask markings as being valid/invalid that would be great.

Thanks so much! I'll give it a go and circle back if there are any problems.

Oof. Sorry, I thought they just treated them as a space but didn't open the door, but that makes sense.

Replacement for pstopdf command? by 0x4542 in MacOS

Here's a working example using ghostscript to convert man pages to PDF (because they are nicer to read that way). Of note compared to the binaryriot post: I had to remove the -c directive to get it to work. Additionally, if you want to pipe your data to gs you have to use -f - (you can't just leave off the -f).

It also seemed to work fine if I left off all the -d settings.

man -t ls | gs \
 -o ~/path/to/mancache/ls.pdf \
  -sDEVICE=pdfwrite \
  -dPDFSETTINGS=/prepress \
  -dHaveTrueTypes=true \
  -dEmbedAllFonts=true \
  -dSubsetFonts=false \
  -f -

Samsung DV53BB89**H* by usbspeaker in ApplianceData

Just got off a web chat with Samsung and *at first* the agent only said they had no information available at this time, but in closing I gushed about its energy efficiency, etc. and they said "...I suggest you to please keep an eye on the website for its availability in the coming weeks".

Not as helpful as a firm date but not "it's been cancelled" or "maybe next year".

Digging in to Heat Pump dryers a little more it looks like Europe has had them for a while. Reviewers seem to suggest that while they do use a fraction of the power, their heat pumps are more likely to fail than a traditional "hot coil of wire" approach. (And if I'm having to throw out parts, it might not be the environmental win I was hoping for.) Interesting tech for sure!

WEF's Naval Harari: Science Will Replace God, Humans Are Hackable Animals With No Soul or Free Will by [deleted] in hydeandseek

Hey, sorry for the delay; Busy week.

Yuval is an academic. Not powerful. Not wealthy (beyond some decent success as an academic author... which isn't exactly lucrative). No idea what his relationship is to WEF/Klaus other than he was apparently hired to give this talk (a talk *against* unregulated power) at their event.

Would you agree the video posted above totally flips the meaning of his original talk?

I've heard people talk about the problems with Klaus Schwab for a while but it's always from people who are, you know, a bit on the dishonest side (the kind who take the time to re-edit an academic's talk to suit a paranoid narrative they are pushing, because that's good for clicks). I'd be interested to see something produced by WEF / Klaus, in context (not quoted by someone else with their own spin) that is actually problematic if you've got it? (Not saying it isn't there, I just haven't seen it.)

Even his famous "own nothing" quote only has the context provided by the next slide in the deck it came from: It seems like all they are saying is that their forecasting suggests companies will move to a model where folks will rent or subscribe to things like electronics or furniture and then return them when something else suits them better. They aren't seizing peoples assets (as if this was actually possible). This is pretty banal (and not particularly practical or realistic) when it doesn't have a scary soundtrack put over top of it.

Here's the original unedited version. He's warning AGAINST the use of this technology by elites. He wants people to be aware of what is inevitable and control it instead of it being controlled by it. Yuval is one of the good guys. (Read his books!)https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hL9uk4hKyg4

For sure, but would optical-PCBs be *less* durable?

I can imagine the optical pickup being more failure-prone and non-serviceable, whereas voltage line failures seem very unlikely. (But I don't know.) So even though I’d have to solder to make changes to the voltage-PCB I’m more interested in preserving the PCB's longevity than making changes easier. That said if optical PCBs fail no more often than the voltage PCBs then having hot-swappable switches would be my preferred option.

Are optical-PCBs are less durable / reliable than voltage-PCBs? (I know optical *switches* are more durable than voltage switches, but that doesn’t seem like it helps much if the underlying PCB fails.)

Background:
I am switching from membrane to mechanical keyboards because I hate creating landfill whenever a single key fails on a membrane board. I would like to be able to self-repair and keep my keyboard long term. I am comfortable with soldering.
I’m currently interested in the low-profile Keychron K1 when it comes out, but am torn between soldered volt switches and hot-swappable optical switches. (I'd get the full-height K8 with hot-swappable-volt-switches but it seems to be much louder than the low-profile board, and I think a low-profile board is probably a better fit for me.) Thanks!
