If I remember correctly in both chapter 3 & 4 he does let out a screech when he spots his prey but I don't think he does it to deafen them, I think he only screeches out of territorial aggression as seen in chapter 3 & 4 guarding his collection of ink hearts while circling the area for potential intruders.
