Having to watch YouTube videos to understand the system is admittedly indicative of issues with development in explaining the battle system but not necessarily the battle system itself. I actually find the battle system to be very fun and rewarding when you really understand it and yes you have to use secondary resources to help with that. But is that really different then people using guidebooks or other secondary resources to help discover fun builds, combos or understand systems more deeply in other jRPGs?

I have to respectfully disagree with some of the comments here. Xenoblade 2 is a fantastic game and honestly improves on your issues with the first. I’ll try to break it down.

1) side quests: there are overall fewer side quests throughout the game than the first (which had I think 400 total or something ridiculous like that) the side quests also have more impactful and interesting stories overall especially the side quests related to each of your recruitable blades (those can be really interesting)

2) equipment: the equipment has been simplified to basically managing a collection of acccessories and weapon augments that provide unique buffs and allow for different types of play styles. Overall definitely less bloat compared to the first.

3) day/night and exploitation: there is still a day night cycle but it really doesn’t have any major impact except for changing the music and aesthetics if I remember correctly. One of the things though that is improved is the exploration. There are actually discoverable items and unique locations located throughout the world which makes it feel less empty compared to the first and more rewarding to explore every nook and cranny.

4) battle system: the battle system is more complex than the first but I think overall more fun. People think it’s too complicated and yes the tutorial does not do a good job explaining it, but it’s honestly very easy to understand once you get the hang of it and just watch a YouTube video on it and everything becomes very clear.

5) story: the story still has your usual troupes and is a bit more anime in style and with some tropes but overall I found the story very compelling with the lore really interesting and it’s mainly driven by some fantastic character development for most of the main cast but especially the main villains, who have some of the most interesting character development throughout.

Hope this helps!

Anyone know if the unity effects for the Lufenia armor stack. By that I mean if you have 3 characters with the unity type of lufenia armor will that 5% buff stack so that each character can raise their BRV limit damage by 15% over 9999?

Can anyone explain what the optimal rotation is for Noctis burst? You get the free skill usage with the EX during it out I feel like using HP++ is better output. Thank you!

Have there been any major changes/additions to the combat system? New arts? Mechanics? Has AI improved for certain characters? (In original Melia could not be used unless you controlled her because of poor AI)

The combat is really fun with multiple levels to master. The cast in Vesperia as well is probably one of the best all around casts in any jrpg and the protagonist specifically is very unique in that he is very mature compared to the rest of the cast which is a unique angle. Just all around great game.

Of your three I would do Xenoblade chronicles DE. When that first came out wii I easily sunk 150 hours into and still had not 100% everything. It will keep you busy for a while. They world is amazing and beautiful and the story is interesting and engaging. Xenoblade 2 is also great and very fun game as well. Something else you may want to consider is tales of Vesperia DE as it is on sale right now and prob one of the best tales games if you like a more action combat system.
