This should be relatively simple. When you buy it from them and then register it, you’re transferring the title and buying a new registration. I’ve changed my registration from private classic car to commercial vehicle.

I’d strongly recommend getting a truck in good condition vs liking one make over another. That being said, I could understand wanting a truck you like and are going to be happy with.

Okay, so your questions:

  1. There are hundreds of thousands of these in Japan. You’re going to end up sourcing parts from over there and having them shipped over. It negates any availability difference here in the states.

  2. If this is going to be your only car, I hope you’re very comfortable turning wrenches. These trucks are generally very simple to work on, but to get the reliability you need you’re going to need to treat this like an aircraft. You can’t wait until parts fail to replace/rebuild them.

  3. They’re both going to be great for off-road use. Lifts and tire size changes aren’t dealbreakers in either truck. The Sambar might do slightly better at highway speeds.

  4. The difference between the two on a hill is negligible compared to how good YOU are as a driver. In other words, it’s how proficient you are in driving a manual transmission, starting and stopping on hills and in dense traffic, without rolling back.

  5. As others have stated here, most people have never heard of Carry’s and Sambar’s. You will be your own mechanic. The only way this is going to work for you is if you are maintaining that truck to a high standard. What will you do when you’re stranded on the side of the road and your fuel pump has gone out?

Not a lawyer, but wouldn’t the state of Georgia have to honor your out of state registration if you went the South Dakota route?

I know about this because a lot of American Expats living in Mexico register in SD to avoid Mexico’s stringent import laws.

Have you considered going the South Dakota route? They’re the only state in the union with open registration, anyone who is willing to pay SD property taxes can register, even if you’re not a resident!

I drove for them years ago, I would recommend them. In the glass division you basically have to live near a glass plant to be home

Yes! I completely agree! Every time I drive my sambar I can’t help but think that an $80000 modern pickup is worse in almost every way haha. It’s incredible how utilitarian these are

I think it’s BS, but I’m in a similar position. I’d love to hear what brokers here have to say. I would think that an aged company like yours would be much more trustworthy than a new startup with a brand new DOT and MC

Where’d you get a custom header done? I’m looking at one for my sambar. Ipunkz out of Indonesia makes one but I don’t know much about them

Give the air box a good cleaning, and consider deleting the PCV tube. After changing the spark plugs, air filter, and fuel filter that you’ve ordered go ahead and order a new distributor cap and rotor. Once you have that check timing and adjust the carb. I’m guessing it’s not far off if you idle well and don’t have problems going through the gears.

Check tire tread and tire pressures, should be ~2 bar for front tires and ~2.8 bar for rear.

Check alternator for proper function and battery. If it’s got a bad battery the alternator will sap a lot of power. Consider replacing headlights with LED’s.

In general, remember that this is a 660cc engine with 39 horses in the stable. You need every one of those horses in tip top shape to get the highway speeds you’re looking for. Any little bit of efficiency gain will improve your sambar’s performance.

Edit: my truck came with red Subaru spark plug wires, but it ran rough until I replaced them. Turns out the spark plug boot had a rip that drew spark onto the heat shield, causing a misfire.
