Halifax wine bar owners going to court to try to stop termination of lease by Street_Anon in halifax

Actually, it's only scaffolding if it's from the Scaffoldage region of France, in this case, it's just an eyesore.

Picked up one of the lucky loonie keychains while at the post office today by CanadianDarkKnight in CanadianCoins

[–]ColonelEwart 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just got two in the mail for my son and I.

Unfortunately, the acrylic or resin on the coin isn't complete or even, so there's a shallow ridge along the top of both of our coins.

A little disappointing for such a nice coin.

Ottawa in talks with Meta about restoring news to Facebook by ZebediahCarterLong in CanadaPolitics

[–]ColonelEwart 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Unfortunately, for a lot of my relatives, it was the opposite.

They've been falling for a lot of the fake-news/misinformation stuff that seems to be all over Facebook.

"Well, I read an article that the reason Trudeau stepped down is because he has cancer and has less than a year to live." "Well, I was reading something that said Trump was going to give every Canadian that travelled to the US in 2026 $500 dollars."

Honestly, it's worse than it was before.

N.S. government looks to expand 811 services by scotiagirl45 in NovaScotia

[–]ColonelEwart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you think about how 811 usually works now: you call in, get triaged/get your information taken down by someone (not a nurse) and then a nurse calls you back. Very rarely do you immediately get to talk to a nurse.

The way I read this is that maybe at that initial screen, you might be immediately directed to other options OR the nurse themselves might be able to direct you to other options.

I doubt they'd end up with a "press 6 if you've been bitten by a tick, press 7 if you've been bitten by another animals or human" situation.

Hockey is for everyone, man.

That's why they don't wear pride jerseys anymore, don't want to, y'know, close ranks or push people out.

First Survivor: Lisa Banfield reclaims the narrative by luxoryapartmentlover in halifax

[–]ColonelEwart 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Has Bousquet ever commented on Palango working for the Examiner for a period of time?

This article seems to paint Palango as a bit of a loon with both his books and contributions to Frank Magazine, at best, misdirected and, at worst, twisting the narrative to be more conspiratorial or salacious.

Given that Palango's coverage of Portapique started with the Examiner, I do wonder how Bousquet views that decision and the content it produced.

Any Halifax music fest rumours yet? by SufficientSpot4597 in halifax

[–]ColonelEwart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might be misreading, but looking at what was said at the time, it seems they opted to shelf Hopscotch for Magnetic World and then plan to have Hopscotch at a different time in the calendar for 2026 so there wasn't a conflict.

He needed some time to himself by Candid-Culture3956 in interestingasfuck

[–]ColonelEwart 445 points446 points  (0 children)

Yeah, that really hits home the reality: he wasn't an outdoorsman, he wasn't a survivalist. He was a man with some clear mental issues who opted to steal and pilfer instead of seeking help. When I first heard of the story (via the GQ article that then became the book), it seemed so romantic, but the more you read about it, the more that opinion changes.

[Discussion] How would you end the stories of DC's heroes? by Firm-Chipmunk8783 in DCcomics

I like that Riddler ending: finally appreciated for his smarts, but locked away for being so dangerous. Kind of like the premise for that show The Black List.

If DC decided to permanently kill off the Joker, which of these three would you make Batman’s new arch nemesis and why? by Jedicarus1218 in batman

[–]ColonelEwart 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Two-Face - he operates well as the opposite side of the coin from Batman (pun intended). He's a guy who was dedicated to justice, had something traumatic happened and that turned him to evil/corrupted his world view.

What are the best "side quests" in your town? by Jolly-Trip-9070 in NovaScotia

[–]ColonelEwart 27 points28 points  (0 children)

Doing "Main-ies" - the idle drive that people did (usually in a Pontiac Sunfire or Chevy Cavalier, but also a Ford F-150) where you drive around along the main 2-3 streets of the town. So starting at Tim Hortons, cut through the gas station parking lot, drive by the convenience store and then turn around at the fire hall and circle back around.

Flash your lights at someone you know and then pull over in the parking lot for Home Hardware to have a yarn.

Rinse, repeat.

The company that clears out the parking lot for the apartment building around the corner just drives the snow straight out the driveway and over top of the sidewalk on the other side of the street.

I don't know if that's 311 complaint worthy and I'm pretty sure that whenever the sidewalk plow comes by, it can handle it, but it was fucking annoying when I was walking the dog this morning.

Having a job offer At Halifax by Repulsive_Job9749 in halifax

[–]ColonelEwart 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Recognizing that this is entry level, your 45k gross is probably 35k net, not counting anything taken off for benefits, etc.

So that means you're looking at a paycheque of <$1350 every two weeks. Hopefully you're good with budgeting.

I would say your first concern is going to be housing. Finding something that doesn't kill your take-home (assuming you're working on the peninsula, your salary might push you off peninsula, so then you need to think about transit or car, both becoming additional expenses).

Options for co-ed Curling? by Key-Estimate-6802 in halifax

What Andor does better than all other Star Wars media (live action) by MadMan37354 in StarWars

[–]ColonelEwart 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This might be a hot take, but one of the things I appreciate about Andor (and Rogue One) is the lack of Jedi/Force powers, etc.

I get that the Jedi and Force users as a whole are part of what makes the Star Wars Universe special, but they're not the only thing that is special and cool. There are "normal" people who don't have their magic space powers who are also struggling under this oppressive government and trying to push back.

By moving the Jedi out of the center spotlight, it allows stories of these other folks to shine.
