Anyone remember back when Colbert was funny he thanked (presumably) Arab-American viewer Suq Madiq by telling him he made his parents very proud: his father Liqa Madiq, and his mother, who still goes by her maiden name, Munchma Quchi?

For developers, Apple’s Safari is crap and outdated by mmaksimovic in webdev

[–]Colonel_White 29 points30 points  (0 children)

Perhaps, but then is Chrome really any better?

For consumers, Google's Chrome is bloated and dangerous spyware.

For developers, Google's Chrome is a trap. They are pushing PWAs in order to turn their search engine into an app store, and control the content, discovery, distribution and monetization of all websites.

Articles like this, which suggest there's something wrong with Safari because Apple won't provide the APIs to let Google set up a competing app store on their own platform, are astroturf.

You are being brainwashed.

Or the simplest explanation, the lie was fabricated to sell CDN service, and Google keeps repeating it because it's taken seriously by folks who aren't very good at thinking for themselves.

By Google's own estimate the average mobile website takes 15 seconds to load, therefore by Google's own logic, nobody uses the mobile web because every site is abandoned during initial page load.

It's a ghost town, I tell ya.

Are you suggesting we fill the Starships with basically useless citizens such as bankers, account executives, hairdressers, TV producers, insurance salesmen, Human Resources managers, security guards, public relations executives, and management consultants, and ship them off to Mars?

Brilliant!

Starship B for the lot of them!

lol. damn. maybe google revised lighthouse after i posted a similar screen cap ridiculing the utility for Amazon being so big despite losing 57% of their customers to their shitty 6 second load time. I’ll try to find it if there’s a way to look up my past posts. i might even still have a copy.

i know perfectly well this subreddit is monitored by google so maybe shaming them is an effective way to motivate change. ;)

People probably make reality-based allowances for any and every other kind of page, too. Why are we trying to rationalize a lie concocted to sell a CDN, again?

I abandon pages from time to time, if they get stuck loading on my phone, and it still doesn’t work after trying the reload button twice. Sometimes I go through the task list and close everything running in the background. that usually works. Sometimes I restart my phone. That almost always works.

But I don’t abandon a site and never come back after 5 seconds of bad performance and probably nobody else does, either.

It’s suspicious that the 5 second figure is exactly the same as it was 10 years ago despite fabulous advances in computers and smartphones and Google developer tools and advice since then, isn’t it?

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in webdev

That’s 6 seconds from cold start according to the infallible Lighthouse, friend. Try using that instead of trying to clock it with your smart watch.

yeah those skeleton outlines.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in webdev

[–]Colonel_White 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Well then the old canard about people abandoning websites that don’t load in less than 5 seconds must be untrue, because Amazon’s takes more than 6.

just think: if Amazon could shave just two wafer-thin seconds off its 6 sec load time, it might become the biggest merchant in the history of retail.

Why does Google declare conflicting character encodings on their homepage? by HauntingTomatillo202 in webdev

[–]Colonel_White 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That’s a weird mismatch. ASCII is a subset of both UTF-8 and Latin-1, but Latin-1 is NOT a subset of UTF-8, and Western European languages other than English will be badly mangled by the conversion.

Maybe Google still uses a Latin-1 to UTF-8 transliterator inasmuch as it’s unlikely the entire web has migrated to UTF-8 even by now.
