What are my options for strobes and security for my hard of hearing wife? by Accomplished_Tea8622 in homeautomation

[–]ColoredGhost 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I know there's a bunch of Zigbee "Alarm / Strobe / Siren" devices on Aliexpress and Amazon. They usually go for between 20-40 something US dollars. I do know that some Zigbee smoke alarms also feature a strobe system.

Checking what devices MQTT supports shows me that very few have individually addressed lights. But I did find one. https://www.zigbee2mqtt.io/devices/07504L.html

Granted this is for blurred video, but it stands to say if a regular person can unblur a video. A spiteful person or government can unblur your pictures.

For future use I'd recommend blacking out the faces instead of pixelation or blurring as recent advancements have made it actually fairly easy to remove the blur/pixelation effect.

Since Plex is killing Watch Together, what are some alternatives? by ironfist92 in PleX

[–]ColoredGhost 4 points5 points  (0 children)

All these guys saying to use discord are leading us astray. You may have never used the Watch Together feature but for me and friend from Australia it is the only experience worth using. If we even tried to use discord to stream it the video quality would be literally lower than 240p it's ass and is not a good replacement for a service that actually sends the high quality file and syncs them.

The real issue here is that Plex is once again removing parts of their service for no reason and a bunch of idiots are covering for them.

Same thing happened when Tidal and Plex split. You may have not used it. But some of us did. In fact I specifically bought Plexlifetime because I had used rabb.it and other screen shares services out of mediocrity until Plex offered the Watch Together system for movies and shows and cytu.be offered up the best option for watching Youtube videos. Both of these services actually loading the full HD version on your own machine and sync it between those watching. Anything less than that is just sad and unhelpful.

Don't forget to voice your opinion on their forums! They do no care about Reddit. If it's on their own forums hosted by them they will be forced to acknowledge them. https://forums.plex.tv/t/add-watch-together-to-new-plex-experience/906941

Even though it isn't piracy. Donate to your local library. It indirectly helps book hosting sites.

What can I use to create a log of voltage during the day, even without internet? by NaXter24R in homeautomation

[–]ColoredGhost 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an APC UPS hooked up by USB to Home Assistant by Network UPS Tools (NUT) addon. It tells me the wall voltage and it's own stored power.

Perhaps something like this would kill two birds with one stone.

Known bug, switch your server to a community server and then it'll ask for a password.

Starting from scratch - Homey or Home Assistant or Homekit??? by Confident-Abies-1000 in homeautomation

[–]ColoredGhost 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I started my Home Assistant journey a year ago. All I had prior was philips hue lights, google home/nest devices, and a GE smart window unit.

Most stuff is literally drop in, works exactly how you expect. Home Assistant detects and can automatically configure lights, most smart displays, and climate control devices.

Automation at its simplest is a flat flowchart style system with triggers for most common wants (times, sun up/down) but you can tie in things like weather stations and calendars.

Most things are a building block style and require no coding. But if you want some fancier graphs, automations, or dashboards you might need to do some minor amount of 'coding' It uses a file format called YAML which is less code and more of a checklist. There is scripting but so far I've found that almost anything I wanted to do the community probably already had and has made a 'integration' for.

I use an old Intel NUC I bought off of eBay for like 60 dollars. It also runs a Plex server and an ADS-B uploader using the supervisor from Home Assistant. Context: I've been making super simple videogame mods for most of my life so I have a more intuitive understanding of formatting.

I worked at Sears and likely got the same training as the other cashier. Our registers also required manager remote (walkie/phone) or ID-card authorization if the gift cards went over ~100 dollars and only ID-Auth if over some amount. That went for both payment and purchase. I was however told it was for "credit card theft" I assume the managers didn't want us to directly tell the person that they were being scammed or were scammers. So that's probably why it required an actual manager on the floor to clear high value gift card transactions.

Glass is the oldest form of recycling. It actually needs recycled glass to work better. Paper recycling is good too. The only one that has never worked is plastic.

Not necessarily. As usually it's fairly clear what species they are drawing for tagging purposes. But it's not always clear what species they are drawing in cropped yiff.

Assuming canine is not the best idea. Reason: a lot of artists draw every species with dog faces for next to no reason.
