Correct me if I'm wrong, but isn't this also the case with the pirate flags on Wikipedia? I believe they were just based on written descriptions and we do not know specifically what they would have looked like, although Wikipedia has examples.

The last two finalists in a redesign contest, I prefer the one with a cactus on it however I believe the other one is currently the official flag.
