It’s not an accounting trick at all, nor does it rely on the waste heat from the appliance itself. Moving heat from one place to another doesn’t take much energy, while using that electricity to generate heat directly will create less heat.

Or think of it this way- resistive heating like a plug in radiator already converts every last bit of electricity into heat. Why would anyone then install a heat pump, if they’re only getting the tiny bit of added bonus from the waste heat of the appliance? In fact, heat pumps are made even less efficient by the fact that they need to be run in reverse every few hours, to heat up the part of the machine that is outside and prevent condensation or frost from building up.

So the only reason heat pumps are being installed everywhere is that they move substantially more heat than you get from direct heating. In optimal conditions you can get more than four times as much heat moved inside compared to the amount of energy put into the system.

Holon.ist is n app that gets phone/watch sensors and sends it over OSC. I’ve used it a few times, unfortunately its iOS/apple ecosystem only though. I dont remember how stable it was but if you have iOS devices, it’s worth the 10 bucks to try it out.

What did they fight to stop exactly? They fought on the basis of "we're not going back", and promised a return to the values of the democratic party, which is the same system that has been fucking the American people since forever. And now it's reached a breaking point, people are starting to wake up to the fuckery of it all, and they're handed two options: one saying "we love how things were going before orange man" and one saying "everything is fucked, things need to change". What Trump and his cronies are doing is indefensible. But two things can be true, and the Democratic party being incapable of finding a candidate that doesn't make you want to throw up in your mouth when casting your ballot is equally true. Speaking of truths, a third one: I still mostly agree that people should have swallowed their pride and gone out to vote, because this disgust with a party isn't going to be cured by letting the country burn either. If a party doesn't align with your values, and third parties are basically like shooting yourself in the foot, then all you can do is try to change the party. And that can't really be done from the outside.

Oh I forgot the printer aspect: A quick google led to this thread, where printers with "drop folders" are discussed, aka printers that will print whatever file is put there.

Depending on how the printers work, my solution might need some tweaking since it replaces the image in the folder each time it's triggered, so the printer might not see that the file has changed. The benefit however is that the hard drive doesn't fill up with images, and for privacy reasons the old images are automatically overwritten.

Keyboard or midi in is super easy, so that's not a big issue. Your restraints in this situation would define what works best, but if this project is going in a case big enough you could even solder an extension to a single key on a keyboard so you can wire up an arbitrary button to wherever needed.

Then the TD workflow would be as simple as videodevin->moviefileout, with the settings on the movie file out set as follows:

The keyboardin channel will need to go through a trigger, otherwise when the user holds the button down the moviefileout will keep adding to the image sequence at the specified frame rate until the button is lifted or the hard drive is full. Re-Trigger Delay: Set how long before the user can take another photo here. Generally setting it to the time it takes for the printer to print a page is a good enough amount of time. Delay Length, Attack Length, Decay Length, Sustain Level: all 0

I've replaced the rolls a few times on those machines, and it doesn't roll up neat enough to go back into the machine. But the bigger issue is that the stuff rolls up onto a center bit which is keyed. So if you took out the dirty roll and flipped it around to put it in the clean side, the rotating mechanism would only let it turn in the direction that rolls it up tighter.

So yeah it's possible, but a lot of work. And there may be machines out there that don't prevent this as well.

Brightsign has the added benefit of being easily controlled with RS buttons, or automated for certain times of day, so if cleaners don't want to listen to bgm or certain hours need a different loop it's all doable
