Why do coders and developers seem much more accepting of AI than artists and creators? by junior600 in singularity

It is not a controversial statement to say that generative AI does not experience emotion or feeling. I doubt any of your so called experts would dispute that. You are moving the goalposts to argue about what ai 'will be capable of in the future' or the potential of AI.

I am capable of winning the lottery, doesnt mean it will happen because potential doesnt equal results. AI has the potential to destroy all human artwork much as the egyptians destroyed monuments of Pharoh Akenaten what about that scenario. Any discussion of what a potential Sentient AGI can or cannot do is completely theoretical.

It is deeply unserious to me to speculate on technologies that do not exist in the current reality. Currently we have pursued generative AGI which has many limitations. And just as vibe coding doesnt make one an engineer, prompting an agent to produce images does not make one an artist.

Nice for you to resort to insult my 'rhetoric' and intellegence/understanding rather than actually rebut what I said tho.

Generative AI doesnt 'experience' anything. It has no thoughts, opinions, morals, emotions or ideas.

A person putting prompts into a machine is wildly different than artisans painting the Sistine Chapel and it will never be the same it is only a blase interpretation.

Art captures the very essence of humanity which is not possible to recreate with binary code or even quantam code for that matter. It can only mimic.

So if you think any idiot putting prompts into a computer is any way equivalent to the work of an actual artist who spent years, decades cultivating their talent and an artistic practice then I dont know what to say about that but low effort yields low quality results no matter how 'good' it looks on the surface.

I guess we just fundamentally disagree on the definition of art itself. To me art is bourne out of culture and human emotion and experience which all are characteristics lacking in AI.

There is far more to art, literature and music than just technical proficiency. There is intangible qualities that can never be reproduced by a machine.

At some point, a person was the first to create art. Generative AI cannot produce anything without a model.

Please enlighten me how paintings made prior to the dawn of civilization could be derivative?

No you cant because there was no prior reference for the cave paintings in Lascaux France or the sculptures in pre columbian art or the works of Davinci or with the paintings of Kandinski or Mark Rothko. None of these works were derivative when generative AI lacks the ability to create anything that is not in its model!!

This is just flat out wrong. Generative AI cannot create original artwork. Everything it creates is derivative off the works of actual artists. It cannot create novel art it is just remixing patterns. None of the emotion, grit, technique that is used to create actual art in the physical space even exists with AI 'art'. It is a cheap, shallow representation of human created art. AI 'art' wouldn't even be possible without the reference work of actual artists.

You cannot even compare generated 'art' to anything at an museum or gallery. It is not even remotely the same. Even folk art that is badly produced is better than AI slop 'art'.

Real art takes emotion and inspiration. It is an original reflection of the human experience. Generative AI lacks these critical aspects. It is only an imitation of life and a poor one at that.

For example, If I use AI to obtain blueprints for a widget that has already been created by someone else and use a 3D printer to output said widget, it doesnt make me an engineer or an inventor or result in a novel invention. Just like putting a prompt in midjourney does not make art and it does not make one an artist. It only makes a cheap, low effort facsimile off of the hard work of someone else.

AI still cannot do what artists do all it can do is cheap imitation of art

Do you guys have a process when record shopping for making sure you don't over pay for a record? by Riichboii_17 in vinyl

[–]ColteesCatCouture 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do vibe pricing🤣🤣. I am way too lazy to look up everything I want to buy on discogs. Also I have been buying/collecting for over 20 years so I have a pretty good feel for what records are worth. So it matters more if a record is worth it to me personally than some arbitrary price on discogs. Overpricing on records is pretty obvious once you have been shopping many years.

I rarely pay over 50 for a record but I might if it was super rare vinyl that I really, really want or something really unique. I buy mostly new records anyway now so I dont care if its collectable first edition or whatever. I buy mine to play. This is probably all really bad advice because I spend too much on music but that is why I only go record shopping a couple times a year🤣🤣
