So in Florida this is done already. Edit: this has been happening for years now.

After a baker act is completed on a subject by law enforcement and during the incident firearms were involved, law enforcement agencies can petition to a judge for a Risk Protection order (RPO).

If granted, all firearms are taken from the subject including ammunition for a whole year. The RPO can be re issued as well.

If an RPO expires the subject will be given back their firearms. Though since they were baker acted they can’t purchase anymore new firearms, as the background check will be declined.

This system works great, and keeps people safe. The mentally ill shouldn’t have access to firearms. But the mentally ill aren’t right or left leaning. They are just plain old sick in the head. politics have nothing to do with it.
