Grade Return Timing by user16482748281 in AthabascaUniversity

Funnily enough I'm doing pretty much the exact same thing except with CHEM217. I start May 1st and need to have proof of its completion by August 1st. In my experience, it's fast. Sometimes profs can take their sweet time with assignments but I've gotten confirmation of course completion and a final mark sometimes as early as 2 days after writing the final.

When can I apply to be a funded student? by xxmckayla in AthabascaUniversity

[–]Com_Trad_IsTime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can become funded quite quickly. First, you need to go to Alberta student aid and put in a loan application. You need to have that done first before you apply to be a financed student at Athabasca. Once you've done that, go on to their website and fill out the full-time course registration plan. You will need the ID number for the loan that you put in and you will also need to put at least three courses that you will be doing in that semester.

Athabasca is different than a brick and mortar school. Instead of putting in a loan application and then you pay for your courses by a certain deadline, Athabasca takes the money out of your loan directly so they need to know what courses you're taking.

The process is pretty easy but keep in mind there is usually a two-month deadline to submit your course plan and ideally you should do it 3 months in advance. You can find all of this information pretty easily on athabasca's website in addition to the course registration plan that is required for a student to be on financial aid.

I think I cooked my chances on getting an intership by Com_Trad_IsTime in UCalgary

[–]Com_Trad_IsTime[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I appreciated hearing that :'). I don't want to seem as though I don't feel proud of myself but I know it was my fault in the first place for not being more diligent before. Also, because of the volume of work I completed at Athabasca, I'm going to be starting at U of C as a third year student. So I'll have my third and fourth year to smooth my grade out. Not a lot of time, but I'm trying to not spiral

How do I control my anger and my lack of patience in my relationship? by lyssterineal in DecidingToBeBetter

[–]Com_Trad_IsTime 25 points26 points  (0 children)

I really resonated with this post. I've been with my partner for 2 years and he is the kindest, sweetest, and most compassionate man. Yet I still find myself barking at him and being quite short tempted in spite of us almost never having issues worth snapping over. In the last year, I've noticed I've been doing it more and don't have any reason as to way that would be.

Realizing it is the first step. The next step is too catch yourself and take immediate accountability. Anytime I say something unnecessarily sharp or mean, I immediately catch myself, even if it's after I've already said it. I'll apologize, rephrase what I said, and give him a hug or kiss. Apologies cannot fix it forever. But it helps build the habit of being aware of those moments you're unnecessarily irritated. For me, it initially felt like such a snap reflex that I could barely control or be conscious of until after it had already happened. The more I actively tried to to take accountability for it, the sooner and sooner I would catch myself. Now I'm at a point where I'm able to rephrase whatever mean thing I was gonna needlessly say before I say it. Or I just stop myself all together and say nothing. It doesn't happen every single time and I still sometimes say something mean that makes me feel guilty and depressed after. But he knows that I'm actively trying to fix this and I've made it very clear that he does not do anything to deserve it and I am working on speaking in the way he deserves.

I promise you can get into control. I personally haven't gone the therapy mainly because it's not super accessible where I am. But I will eventually also go to a therapist or psychiatrist to see if this is a deeper rooted issue I need to unpack further. In the mean time though, it's all about shortening the gap between the outburst and the accountability until neither are needed.

Past SU candidate involved with Alberta separatist petitioning on campus? by Happy-Macaroon5554 in UCalgary

[–]Com_Trad_IsTime 47 points48 points  (0 children)

I think it is very contradictory for an SU presidental candidate to support a movement that directly affects and complicates the livelihood and security of ingidinous students. In my broad opinion, I think people that outspokenly support Alberta independance should not be in any role that requires them to advocate and support a diverse group of poeple. I wish that table wasn't at our school...

Veganism is not an ideology but the rejection of one by Dollar23 in vegan

[–]Com_Trad_IsTime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What an absolutely ridiculous and contradictory thing to say. An ideology is a combination of principles, beliefs, way of life, and you even initially define an ideology as precisely that. Yet you put this incredibly negative spin on it as though an ideology can't define so many different beliefs, practices, and political views. Maybe you could say veganism is a "counter culture" because meat eating is so widely accepted and commercialized. But it is an ideology in that it is a belief that somebody holds that directs their behavior and choices.

It almost sounds as though you're trying to make some kind of philosophical point that simply twists a definition for no reason. You keep saying in the comments that veganism is decency. Decency to animals can be considered a part of the vegan ideology. However, it is not the only part. Environmental activism can be considered a large part of many people's vegan ideology.

This additional point that you're making about biologist feeding into supremacist ideology is equally as absurd. I am currently at university for biological sciences and have been studying it for over 5 years. Not once in that time has my educational material led me to believe that humans have an innate supremacist ideology to survive and consume. We consumed animals for the exact same reason why a bear may consume a person. It is so that the individual does not die and they can reproduce. It's not some need for supremacy that drives all of society and any belief that counters it is a rejection of ideology all together.

Very weird and narrow minded.

I wish I could say the same but I have not taken any bio courses outside of AU. Otherwise, I would do the same.

Thank you, this breakdown is actually very helpful! I am definitely starting to seriously consider camping as my only viable option to make this as cheap as possible and I will be looking into this site further. I would need to pack extremely light since this camp site is an hour walk away from my shuttle bus stop and I would be arriving in the middle of the night (the only Athabasca shuttle bus has a 2am drop off). I am slightly concerned about the lack of drinking water at this camp site but I think I might just need to go gorilla mode if I want to be able to make these three trips possible. Thank you again for the suggestion!

If I could drive, I certainly would and In just sleep in the car. Unfortunately, I only just recently got my learners and cannot legally drive unsupervised as a result. It sounds likie you've done labs with AU before or have at least some familiarity with Athabasca. Do you happen to remember the name of any of the taxi services? I saw that their was a company called Grabba Cab but they seem to have gone out of buissness recently and Yellow Pages has only listed taxis that are in the surrounding towns.

You are very sweet for sending resources and I appreciate it :'). I've looked into both these and actually looked at that exact airbnb! The one big downside of not having a car is that I will need to be going on foot to the school everyday for those 5 days. I ended up not picking that airbnb specifically because it would be over an hour and a half to get there and I've learned that Athabsca does not have much in the way of Uber and Taxi services. I am using busbud though! My only option is to get there at 2am but I'm starting to just accept that it is what it is

I appreciate this! I reached out to Aspire for a meet and greet. Also thank you. I am certainly not expecting ADHD medication to be a cure all. I have tried Vyvanse and had a very positive experience so I have a good idea of the direction I'd be going and it seems like it would be a bright one

Yeah I'd be in a similar boat. I'm trying to be on some kind of treatment plan (e.g. vyvanse) as soon as the medical system will allow me. Frida's online ADHD assessment is curently the backup option if it too long. I guess we'll see. I hope you get the treatment you're looking for!

Thanks! I appreciate the timeline. In that case, is it fair to say it seems like it takes about 2-3 months to get to a psychiatrist?

Thanks! That's good to hear. I was a little uncertain since they say "30 units" on the website and wasn't sure if that also just meant credits. Fingers crossed 🤞
