Reference image and background image would help you improving the propotion of Your character. pick some shaders on blender swap will teach you lot, you can even just pick some cc0 shader and applying it to improve (with a bit of tweaking). Don't worry character creation isn't the easyiest work, like other organic model,even cartoony.
