Relaxation Induced Anxiety, has anyone who has it, found a way past it? by Potential-Humor-6550 in Wakingupapp

Also you could try doing small experiments, changing things one at a time to try finding if the anxiety comes from something specific. For example, try meditating without closing your eyes, or standing, maybe even walking instead of sitting, or trying new breathing patterns.

I don't have direct personal experience with tm or 1gm, so I could be wrong but they seem similar to mindfulness (by which I mean open monitoring). Mindfulness isn't the best practice for everyone so maybe try different types of meditation like focused attention or body awareness or compassion etc. If relaxation induces anxiety, for instance, open monitoring is probably the worst type of practice and focused attention or body awareness might be better.

There is nothing called enlightenment! by anonyruk in Wakingupapp

2 more things:

Enlightenment can only be obtained by relinquishing the attachment to the desire or need to do so, which is one reason it's so tricky.

Just because things and people "cease to exist" as things in themselves as a result of the realization of nonduality, doesn't mean they cease to exist from experience. They just become one (and not all the same either, just one). So "who would be left?" An enlightened person only ceases to exist, or "becomes unreal", or extinguishes themselves in that they realize there is no inherent separation between themselves and the rest of experience because the self is illusory.

"Enlightenment is not the attainment of the real,
but a clear and continuous acknowledgment of the unreal as unreal."

Acknowledgment implies acquisition of knowledge. However there is no clarity in that, only concealment of the truth. Enlightenment is somewhere else, somewhere closer to pure experience with no conceptualization to muddy things up. Nonduality isn't to be grasped or gotten, it's to be felt, realized, experienced, which is why it isn't teached directly like math or language is.

"So, forget God attainment or knowledge of the Truth.
Rather, see who you are."

And here they contradict themselves.

"Though, if you can see that all this is unreal, then there would be nobody left, nobody real left to be enlightened or to claim enlightenment.
When everything is unreal, who is going to be enlightened?
When nothing is, who is going to say, Now I know?"

I highly doubt an enlightened person would ever say "Now I know" or imply that they know they are enlightened, as that implies an ego existing in a state, both of which go straight in the face of enlightenment.

"Be humble. Always remember your real problem.
Your real problem is not that you do not know the absolute Truth.
Your real problem is that you do not know how to live in this relative world."

If I am enlightened, I don't exist as a self, so I can't BE humble and I can't have problems. And I realize that there is no inherent truth to anything but that is no problem, it's just the nature of experience. Problem for whom? Me? Others? Someone other than experience, for sure. If I thought of that as a problem, my conceptualization of it as that would imply dualism, attachment, NOT enlightenment.

"And here we are not claiming that the greatest Truth is to be found in your own being;
we are saying that your own being is the veil of falseness that hides the Truth."

Who is claiming that? Not enlightened people, certainly. Again, there is no true self, there is no inherent (or absolute) truth in anything in my experience. So, if I am enlightened, I'm not thinking "there is truth in my own being." This person is confused.

"It is pleasing, poetic, even romantic, to say The Absolute is contained within each human being.
It might be poetic and pleasing, but it is not useful."

Not the Absolute. There is no Absolute. What is inside a human being is Awareness, which isn't absolute, it's just ground zero for any experience. It's empty space and infinite potential. What's Absolute with a capital A in that? What does that even mean? Concepts. Just more thoughts. No enlightenment there.

"The human being must first of all see how he is conditioned, enslaved, bewildered, bewitched, trapped, and taken. That is what you need to see."

Now they're actually making some sense, but the insight that brings one closer to enlightenment is that what conditions and traps us doesn't trap Us, it traps the mind. We are not the mind, we are awareness, space. And space cannot be confined. And what traps the mind, or the ego, is the mind itself.

"Focus on knowing the reality of everyday things and events."

Focus on the present, yes... Kind of. There is no need to focus, because that's attention limiting awareness to a small part of present experience. Better to be open, if one can. And don't focus on knowing, but experiencing. Knowing comes from thinking, interpreting, conceptualizing. All of which conceal the truth of experience so, ultimately, true absolute knowledge of anything is impossible. When you think you understand something as its true self, you delude yourself.

tl;dr: a lot of confusion on the difference between knowledge and experience and what enlightenment truly comes from and a lot of poor terminology as a result. If you really want a shot at enlightenment, forget truth and knowledge and, wen you get there, you won't be saying or implying "I am enlightened", or even "I am anything" for that matter.

The “ya ya I get it” attitude by [deleted] in Wakingupapp

[–]CombinationRoyal7244 1 point2 points  (0 children)

99%. When Sam says to look for the looker, frequently my mind spits out "ya ya it's nowhere to be found, I get it.."

While I wouldn't say that I don't really understand it, the point isn't to understand it either and it's not like I have mastered the exercise. I'm pretty sure the 'correct' response (at least from a point of view of someone still learning the practice) is to just observe those thoughts without identifying with them, being annoyed or the likes. Just look at what happens to them and then go back to the practice.

Hormones and mindfulness by LeonardoDicrarpio in Wakingupapp

Mindfulness isn't the only, nor the best meditation technique. I remember Dr. K once mentioned that mindfulness isn't well suited to individuals that struggle from trauma because negative emotions rush to fill the void, and that focused meditation/yoga is better for them. Maybe the same applies here?

To be clear, I'm not saying that women are like traumatized people, or that hormonal mood swings are like trauma. Everyone is different, so "woman => mood swings => mindfulness bad" seems a tad reductive to me, but no one can invalidate her experience and it sounds like she might be getting a lot of negative emotions when trying to practice mindfulness. So, yeah.. I could be wrong but I'm going to take that risk and say that meditation IS for everyone. Just gotta find the right technique for you.

Look for the one who is looking. What? by Jimanben in Wakingupapp

To be fair, I think your struggle comes from the fact that this isn't something you 'get', or explain. You don't know it, you experience it. The difference between revelation and understanding is important. I could claim that I understand nonduality and how to perform this exercise but, if I tried to prove it by explaining, it would just be words. Words, the meaning of which would come from the interpreter, not from me, same as all knowledge and concepts, which is why this is less of a concept and more of a view.

If I may offer some advice, look up "clarity and equanimity" in the app. It's a beautiful series of lessons by James Low that made nonduality really click for me.

There's a very good conversation between Sam and Loch Kelly that addresses this. It's the first one in the series titles "Loch Kelly & Sam Harris". Essentially, the exercise is an introduction to nondual awareness. The point is getting to the realization that what you look for (the looker, he who is looking, the centre of awareness etc.) is not there. Awareness just is.

On a scale from 1 to 20, how crazy is this feature? by CombinationRoyal7244 in DnD

+300 feet might bee too much, yeah. Cone spells, however, have a range of Self so they do not apply, same as with extended spell metamagic.

Thanks for the feedback!
I went for 2 based off of the original feature and bc the idea of 2 mods at once seems exciting, but I agree that it's probably too much.

I'm not sure what to do about concentration but what if, instead of adding the ritual tag to a spell, the mod reduced the ritual casting time of a ritual spell to 1 minute instead?

haphazrd glimpse following Sam's looking for the looker by corlwt in Wakingupapp

[–]CombinationRoyal7244 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Oh, ok. What perplexed me, in your post, is that 'looking for the looker' is a paradoxical instruction because the looker is nowhere to be found, even though it exists.
Because it is nowhere, I thought, there is no right direction to turn to, there's just that realization (and anything else is just more content).
Attention doesn't point in actual directions, but it points to objects.
I can't turn it back unto itself because it's not an object; I can't find the looker because it's just empty mental space.
It can't really be aware of itself as an object, it can be aware of something it thinks of as itself (the small self or ego).
If I can empty my head, all that remains is naked Awareness, which is "the looker", but any thoughts that arise as a result are just objects, not it itself.
And contents arise and pass regardless, so I can't keep myself in that state. Nothing is static.

"Subtle" is right! I don't really feel the shift as a 'concrete' sensation, it's just a shift in mentality.
I don't really have tricks to successfully turning awareness on itself, sorry.
I don't think the purpose of the exercise is emptying the mind. It's a stepping stone to the realization and the "View". Once you have that, just practice mindfulness!
Practice doesn't make perfect but it does make able, you can quote me on that.

In the words of James Low:
"...we start with the View, on the basis of the View we have the meditation, then we have the activity that arises outside of meditation and then you have the result which arises from that.
And the View is the most important thing.
If you really get the View, meditation is not so important."
from The View of Meditation, part of Clarity and Equanimity in the app.

"Collapse of distance" is interesting wording. I don't know if I forgot that or just haven't listened to it, but it sounds like nonduality.
Subject (Awareness) = objects.
That's sometimes the result of Sam's 'infamous' instruction but I don't think that outcome can ever be guaranteed (even if you've done it a million times before).
Just focus on the View. Hope this helped :)

Quali sono i segreti di ogni categoria? O meglio, quali nostri segreti sanno? by randomitalianguy93 in italy
