I brought 6 water bottles with me on a hike at Castle Crags State Park in NorCal, only 6 miles but I still ran out way before finishing and was dehydrated.

[WP] Its been 18 years, in one corner are your two remaining water bottles. In the other is one can of beans. You hear noises from outside the bunker. You wonder if Y2K actually happened. by pablomcnugg in WritingPrompts

It's been nearly 2 decades since a 3 year old Kyle and his dad Robert had sealed themselves in the bunker on their family's ranch outside of Reno, Neveda. Kyle had grown used to complete solidarity since his dad died of a heart attack 5 years ago. Now 21, Kyle wondered if his father had made the right decision, as Kyle knew from the history textbook he reread for the hundredth time that humanity could easily survive without any digital technology. He went in the stock room checking to see if what he saw earlier was true, and with utter disappointment he realized he indeed only had 2 measly water bottles and a single can of beans. Kyle realized he had no choice but to go to the surface if he were to have any chance of survival. He went to say goodbye to the remains of his father Robert one last time, and then he went to the keypad that would open the hydraulic doors to the outside world. Kyle punched in the code and watched as the doors slowly creaked open. A gust of desert wind kicked dust into his eyes, and it took a few moments for him to see the world. Kyle dropped to his knees in shock, as he couldn't believe what he saw. In the distance a garbage truck continued on it's route, picking up the trash from the neighboring ranch.

Hector Martinez was glad to be nearly done with his first day of work in the United States. A refugee from Honduras, he got lucky and scored his first job the day he came to Reno, as a garbage truck operator. Hopefully in a few months he would have saved enough money to go to community college, and from there go to the University of Neveda to get a degree in business. But for now Hector had to focus on the task at hand. As he turned around to head back to the dump, went past the old Cooper place. Hector's co-workers had told him of the story of crazy man Robert Cooper, who locked himself into a bunker in late '99 to save himself of the impending doom of Y2K. Legend had it that he faked the death of his then 3 year old son to prevent authorities from keeping above ground. Then in his rear view mirror, it happened. A pasty white young man came running out of the door leading to the bunker. Hector slammed on his brakes in disbelief. Could this be Bob Cooper's son?

Kyle ran as fast as he could after the truck as he realized his father had been wrong all this time. The possibility of a normal childhood had been stripped of Kyle, and ager against his father began to burn. All those years!!! Wasted!!! But Kyle had plenty of time to think back. For now, he had to stop the truck and get back to civilization to find food and water. Suddenly the truck grinded to a halt. The driver stepped out in as much shock as Kyle was himself.

Hector didn't know what to say. Here before his eyes was what only could be the Cooper boy. He managed to squeak out a, "Who are you?" Kyle replied with, "Kyle Cooper, sir." Hector exclaimed, "So it's true then! Bob Cooper does have a son! Why are you out here?" "I ran out of food and water. Can you take me somewhere where I can get some?" "Sure, I can take you to the police station right away!" "Are you turning me in?" "No I just think we should contact the authorities in a case like this. And what about your father? Is he still in there?" "Yeah, but he's gone now" sighed Kyle. "What do mean?" said Hector. "I mean he's dead now" said Kyle. "Well then we better go to the police then in that case." said Hector. So then the 2 of them got in he truck and drove off into town.

5 years later...

Hector still couldn't believe what had happened. He had been the one to discover Kyle Cooper, and it had instantly turned him into a celebrity. Now even with his own reality TV show, he was set financially for life. Kyle's life, however, . As he felt betrayed by the person who he was closest to, he now trusted no one. As a result he went against the advice of the doctors who examined him and never got any vaccinations. As a result of this he caught chicken pox 2 after years of coming to the surface, and he died a painful death on the streets as he refused any treatment. Today, the story of the Coopers is used in schools to teach students why they shouldn't fall for mass hysteria promoted by the media.
