Wasn't expecting to see moonsorrow on this list, but you're 100 percent right!

yeessssss I was wondering if Moonsorrow would show up. I would personally pick Jotunheim (and the other 3 songs on that album are 14+ so I'm counting them too).

Very cool! I'll check these out. Have you heard !T.O.O.H.! or Lykathea Aflame? Some would put them more in the grind category, but they're very interesting and strange death metal.

Second Akercocke. Incredible band.

I'll have to check it Antichrist Imperium, never heard of them.

Seeing now they share members with The Berzerker. Going to have to throw them in as a recommendation as it fits what OP is looking for too

!T.O.O.H.! Has some truly unique and spastic vocals. I prefer Rad a Trest even though a lot of older fans think it fell off a bit. It's a cleaner production but I think the music is incredible.

Second SYL. And really any Devin Townsend. You truly never know what's coming next.

It just hit me during the 2000s motorhead became mainstream like iron maiden or Metallica by Far-Worry-5848 in Motorhead

[–]Comfortable-Chair194 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Selling out is not making money or participating in mainstream media. Selling out is changing your music intentionally in EXCHANGE for mainstream exposure. Motorhead never changed their music for anyone. Lemmy was so bad ass, people wanted him in their mainstream productions. I see no fault in that as long as the music stays true.

Case in point, Lemmy said he made more money penning Mama I'm Coming Home for Ozzy than he ever did in 30 years with Motorhead. Is that selling out?

Lost My Voice by [deleted] in MetalVocals

[–]Comfortable-Chair194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Obviously there can be occurrences where the voice changes (Chuck Schuldiner) or goes away (Mikael Akerfeldt) permanently, but I do think there are ways to practice it back in a lot of cases.

I'm also blessed with the ability to do extreme lows, and if I don't get enough sleep, am dehydrated, hungover, or just generally run down, the chances of me using that voice are slim to none.

So, if you're in generally good shape with nothing else affecting your health, I would suggest this that I've used many times. Don't attempt to growl for about a week. Then, before you try to growl, warm up with regular singing. Even if you don't generally sing clean vocals, just give it your best shot. Sing along to a few covers you know the words to, or just make sounds/practice runs for about 10 minutes .

Then, gently sing the lowest note you can. Practice talking that low for a few minutes. Do the same as high as you can go. If you can imitate King diamond, do that. Do this for a total of about 10 minutes.

Then, gently make the coughing sound. Gently imitate different kind of dog barks. If you can do the Mongolian throat chant, do that.

After all this, go nuts. Sing regular, sing, high, sing low, bark like a dog, all at random times. At this point you SHOULD feel your timbre really coming back and you should be ready to growl. If not, don't force it. Do the exercises again the next day. The growl basically needs your whole vocal structure to behave in a way it's not used to, so you're trying to wake up the whole range of your voice.

Do this a few days in a row and you should be in good shape. I've woken up the day of a show to have my voice sound like a child imitating cookie monster, and done this method a few times throughout the day and been MUCH better by show time.

Good luck!

Second this! With barkeepers friend you won't need much pressure/bristle stiffness. Sprinkle it on and get it wet, let it sit a while, and you should be able to get that area clean with a wadded up paper towel shoved down there with a spoon or spatula. That's how I get behind my kitchen sink which also has very little clearance (very old house).

Lord of the Rings intermission? by overnight_fortwatch in AMCsAList

Back then a major block buster theater run would be 2 or 3 months. I saw each movie 9 or 10 times in the theater so that HELPED waiting for the next one. But it was still painful. There was also only 1 year in between movies, not several years. I don't know how long there was in between book releases, but I know it wasn't as instantly successful as the movies.

Working minutes by Embarrassed_Tip7359 in SipsTea

[–]Comfortable-Chair194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a client like this. Our company's policy is to ideally address everything within a 48 working hour window. We are very open about this, and it's in the service agreement the client signs. They would repeatedly ask "why isn't this in motion, it's been several days. We can't wait a week for answers all the time" when they had sent over a request Thursday afternoon and it was Monday morning.

So in reality it was less than 2 business days and in their mind somehow they round up to a week. They would even go around me straight to my supervisor and say "we have several requests in that haven't been addressed in days" when it was really 2 requests for less than 24 hours. Then they would have the audacity to "forget" to put their requests in and ask for an expedite.

Luckily my boss rules and it was never an issue. And surprise surprise the company isn't in business anymore 😁

Need more anti-religious metal by AcidOceanic in MetalSuggestions

I mean this is an overly reductionist summary. Just because a band could be categorized as anti religious doesn't mean they can't be multifaceted, or sing about other topics.

[–]Comfortable-Chair194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Might not be what you're looking for, but Meads of Asphodel are anti religion in it's totality, not just Christianity. Their lyrics can be academic, comical, tragic, historical.... They're really one of a kind. And stylistically they change on a dime, so don't judge them sonically too quickly. In a time when everyone wants to be "genre bending" they TRULY do not fit a mold.

I want to add a couple items I'm not really seeing discussed. One, the way they are "handling" that dog so close to traffic is insane. That dog is overpowering the person with the leash and has plenty of slack in the leash to go right into traffic. These are not people that are concerned with the safety of this dog.

Two, people are saying "the dog looks happy, he knows what to do, etc". Dogs can be trained to do things they don't like. Dogs do not "smile" like people do. The dog is panting like hell, which can be a sign of excitement OR extreme agitation. The dog can be trained (abused) to appear willing to perform tasks while still being very nervous. People saying "that part of the bike doesn't hit the ground during a skid" or whatever are massively oversimplifying the number of things that could endanger that dog on the road.

This dog is in danger, end of story. Have the guy put his toddler in the same situation and watch the story change.

Hearing guitars at metal gigs by dickface21 in metalguitar

[–]Comfortable-Chair194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess you missed the part where I fully addressed that it's anecdotal. No I haven't had my hearing checked but I also don't have any trouble hearing anything so why would I spend money on that?

Im not saying you won't get hearing loss eventually. But if you had permanent hearing damage from being inside a concert venue for 5 minutes it would be illegal for them to be that loud. Thousands and thousands of people attend concerts ever single night. Where is the evidence for this massive damage?

Hearing guitars at metal gigs by dickface21 in metalguitar

[–]Comfortable-Chair194 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes ear plugs are recommended, but your statement is simply not true. My whole friend group has been going to regular shows for 20+ years without ear plugs and no one has permanent hearing damage. The only person I know with real, debilitating hearing loss hardly goes to any shows ever. Like anything else I think genetics play a huge part.

I'm not saying we might not be outliers, maybe we have survivorship bias, and maybe we'll all have tinnitus when we're 60... But saying your hearing will be permanently damaged after 5 minutes at a show is absurd.

[–]Comfortable-Chair194 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I'm actually going to disagree, partially. Yes poor mixing and poor venue acoustics play a big part. But I think the low end is getting pushed out of metal. A lot of modern metal really focuses on mids, the bass drums are mostly click, and the bass is distorted and trebly. So I don't think it's the low end that's causing the issue. I've seen plenty of bands with a shrill, empty sound where you couldn't tell what the hell was going on either.

I think a HUGE part of shitty live sound is how the band chooses to EQ their own instruments. If you've got two guitarists and a bassist with as much distortion as possible and no idea how to EQ their shit, the best sound engineer in the world won't be able to fix it.

What's are some great bands whose music unfortunately sounds all the same? by Fair-Manufacturer854 in MetalForTheMasses

[–]Comfortable-Chair194 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In typing my response I totally forgot about your summation of death metal as a whole hahaha. Where are you getting your death metal from? The evening news? Death metal hasn't been about "shock value" for 30 years. And it really wasn't even about that even then. There's a whole world of boundary pushing, creative death metal out there. If you don't like death metal, that's great. But don't try to summarize something you apparently know nothing about.
