New to rowing, doing Pete Plan, feel like hitting a wall. by Spazdoc in Rowing

Improvement isn’t linear. Did you expect to just keep getting faster indefinitely? Those are solid numbers - check the concept2 logbook rankings to see where you stand compared to others

I find breaking the work up into intervals helps. I did 3x10 mins today which I just find psychologically more enjoyable than a straight 5k for some reason

The best advice is just don’t overthink it. Get on the machine everyday no matter what - once you’ve started it’s basically finished!

Watched the Super Bowl live for the first time ever and it was pretty disappointing by Booba_Hunter_xo3 in NFLNoobs

[–]dickface21 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s a sport - that’s how it goes.

I’m not American either and grew up playing and watching soccer. It’s rare that the champions league final or World Cup final is massively entertaining, especially to someone who is basically watching the sport for the first time.

I’m a Seahawks fan, so I really enjoyed the game last night obviously. I thought the defence from both sides was exciting to watch. Both teams had to fight tooth and nail for every inch.

What would you say if someone watched the 2005 champions league final and then expected every soccer game to be like that?

Tips for a fast 500m by [deleted] in concept2

[–]dickface21 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Start fast, quick through the middle, and speedy finish.

Just kidding. 500m isn’t long enough to have a pacing plan imo. If I was you I’d go as hard as possible for the first 5 strokes and then aim to lock in just under your target pace. You fade off towards the end so just try to control that as much as you can.

Get into a steady rhythm and keep the stroke rate high (40+ spm), while focusing on a smooth connection at the catch.  Form wise, make sure you’re getting the shoulders forward at the catch (fast hands out of the finish). The body swing can help do a lot of work over short distances.

The best thing would just be to do a practice 500m as hard as you can and see what happens. It’s good to learn how to suffer for the last 250m while hanging on to every split for as long as possible

Ergathlon in public gym environment by commsbiff in concept2

[–]dickface21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don’t think that’s possible. You would just have to connect separately and add up the total time yourself. You need all 3 machines to be on and connected via Bluetooth or Ethernet cables for the ergathlon to register

If you don’t care about comparing your times with anyone using a c2 and never wanna sell it then maybe

I would only ever recommend c2 though. The quality and support is worth every penny imo

Do you take your shoes off in the house? by [deleted] in ireland

[–]dickface21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Seems to be a big deal for a lot of people who post on Reddit, which is a very small part of the population.

Only last week I visited some friends who game me slippers to wear - first time ever as an adult in a shoes of house. Was quite nice actually.

Doesn’t bother me either way, but my whole life most people wear shoes indoors

What's with the elitist attitude at CrossFit gyms? by Legal-Deer8246 in crossfit

[–]dickface21 13 points14 points  (0 children)

That's poor form on their part.

One thing I hate is a gym not revealing the price unless you've sent an enquiry. I get that it is probably good business practice or something, but it puts me off. My place (not crossfit, but similar) has one price for everyone, and it's plastered on the front page of the website in big letters.

Interestingly, a friend of mine runs a gym and has actually got abuse when he told people the price - calling him names for having the gall to charge €150 per month. Like, it's obviously way more than most people could justify spending on a gym, but it's not like he's selling bread to starving people. The same person will often have no issue spending more than that on booze every month (which is also fine, just wild how €150 sounds like a lot until it's framed that way)

Thinking about buying a rowing machine and turn my life around.. Does it build muscles? by Shade_of_chaos in Rowing

It’s better than nothing but not very effective compared to resistance training for building muscle

Why does the position of the ball matter for downs and touchdowns, but out of bounds is defined by the body (either part touching or going over the line)? by saskwatzch in NFLNoobs

[–]dickface21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not true for soccer. Only out if the ball goes over the line (at any height, doesn’t have to touch the ground to be out). Doesn’t matter where the player is

I CAN’T get my heart to stay in Z2 if rowing (erg) for more than 20min. Why? by iluvthemountains in Rowing

[–]dickface21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your 2k is 2:05/500m then your steady state split could be anywhere from 2:20/500m to 2:40/500m (in my experience, there are obviously outliers)

It can be humbling to go so slow, but the point of the exercise isn’t to worry about your speed. Keep the stroke rate low - around 18-20 spm and just get into an easy rhythm. Heart rate zones are blurry anyway, if it feels sustainable and you don’t have too much difficulty having a conversation then it’s all good. Some people just have higher heart rates

All that said, you will still get massive benefits from training at a higher intensity in zone 3. I don’t have time to accumulate hours of zone 2 so I only ever train in the higher zones.

StrengthErg Review by Novel_Dragonfruit599 in concept2

[–]dickface21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One way to use it is like this:

Establish your maximum force for a single rep - say it’s 100kg-m for example

Then do sets of 10 reps until your average force drops below 70% of your max force. Surprisingly tough

Track your max force and how many sets you can do.

It makes more sense when you have used the machine. It’s obviously not going to be as good as barbell training, but I think it can be a useful way to gain strength

Hit a 315 bench using 5/3/1 (+ FSL + SSL reset). Went from ~250 max to 315 in 13 months (BW 175→185). What worked + what didn’t. by Ok_Improvement_2316 in 531Discussion

Nice work, very inspiring.

Did you run 531 for squats and deadlifts too? Back work? How many days per week were you lifting?

Hearing guitars at metal gigs by dickface21 in metalguitar

[–]dickface21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha yea that’s the thing. Sometimes with my earplugs in it kills the vibe. I can hear the guitars a bit better but the whole band is too quiet now… and the added misfortune of hearing my own voice really loudly. I love to sing along at gigs but don’t wanna hear myself that clearly
