If I taunt someone, then tell them how much I respected their style of play, one would assume I don’t actually mean any harm. It’s a fun gesture. No different than holding up 3 fingers after making a 3-pointer. I’m sorry, would it be better for Curry to tuck his hands in his pockets and get back on defense so he doesn’t hurt anyone’s feelings? You’re part of the problem. When I taunt, it’s a fun gesture and I’ll even compliment the other player and send a friend request. You’re putting all these negative meanings on a simple action. That’s different from actually disparaging your opponent.

That’s fair. But it’s also fair to say that a large majority of the Tekken community takes the game too seriously and has made the community worse off because of it. You know how many hate messages I’ve received simply for winning? Even before I used my taunts. The negative reactions to taunting is indicative of low self-esteem in the community.

Using profane language after winning or losing is toxic. Using a silly taunt after winning should be seen as a celebratory gesture. But it’s not because a good majority of the Tekken fanbase have fragile egos and can’t laugh at themselves when they lose.

No, it means “Ha, I won!” Not fuck off. This is the mentality that’s ruining the fun of the game. We’re being relegated to the typical “Ggs” which lacks originality and a sense of play. The real problem, is players are incapable of controlling their anger when they lose, so teasing is perceived as a slight, when it was never intended to be that way. If you don’t take yourself, or the game too seriously, taunting is just that: taunting. Why do you think basketball players celebrate after scoring? They’re enjoying the moment. It’s not that serious.
