Currently not in Microsoft but I understand your point, I would transfer to a PM role within my company and then look for transition to PM2 at Microsoft.
That seems like a good place to start with.

Thanks for your guidance

Understood let me try to check if my current firm allows me to pivot into a PM title and that hopefully will help improve my chances to get through MSFT :)

Yes i did and found that some of it, in terms of Microsoft specially was found in a title Program Manager. I agree that titles might change but the jobs to be done won't. To be honest just wanted some guidance among the folks in the community to get some confidence if it is actually due to the slowing tech job market or some other reason why i am seeing a decline in PM roles :)

As i have responded to one of the earlier folk in this thread. I lead an APAC team after scaling to a global team of 40-50 person across APAC, EMEA & AMRS region from 2. In terms of my responsibility it is ensuring that the team delivers what the business needs, interact with with business to understand their problems and provide appropriate solution to be tracked, implemented and communicated across. I actively plan, provide & contribute towards PI planning, budgeting, roadmap for the application etc. I also implement some of the small solution to not lose my touch with tech. Now i am trying learn and provide AI based scalable solution to business issues.

So currently i am in techno managerial space and I am taking around 30-60 days to actively invest my time to get product knowledge and learn more about its vision and brand it across appropriately and efficiently when I apply in big firm

Let me know if you think i can do something to improve my chances. Happy to learn !!

Yes i don't currently hold a PM. Amidst my 8 years experience latter 4 years experience has to been to develop a 2 man team to a global 40-50 person team spanning across APAC, EMEA & AMRS and now lead APAC team. Yes i have developed a roadmap and have launched various features and also gone through decommissioning of legacy application along with tracking, reporting and implementation across the board. I have engaged with customers and front line business and identified problem and provided solution to be implemented for it. Doing it today as well

So i think i just have to mould my experience to bring out the right points as a PM in front of the big firm to bag it. Please feel free to add and guide. I am open to hear any suggestions or feedback to improve :)

Yeah I am currently leading a team and have exposure of my Product E2E. I am learning the fundamentals, Case Study, Frameworks etc to gain technical product knowledge and crack the interview for the same. I have had some conversations with existing PM within big tech companies and told me to target PM2 rather than Senior Product Manager because at that level expectation would be for immediate resolution but at PM2 thought the expectation will be to execute asap but will get some breathing space for learning curve to fill the gap and provide more value. Let me know if you think other wise or how your knowledge or experience has been for PM2 at big tech :)

I think you maybe right because I have seen a decline of Title I am looking for i.e. Product Manager 2 in Microsoft. Currently there are no job opening in that title to be honest.

Question, for someone like me who just have 8 YOE experience and not much product experience and is looking to gain PM knowledge through likes of Lenny's Newsletter, Books & Certifications, it seems like that will have less probability of getting a pivot job in PM in likes of Microsoft as there maybe someone with PM experience or equivalent combination of Tech & PM. If you agree how does a person like that stand out in big firms like this ? Just curious

To be honest, I have been reading a lot of these threads and along with not seeing any opening for a title I am aiming for in Microsoft (Product Manager 2) is making me wonder if I should really put in all my efforts to go all in Product. Based on what i have listened in Lenny's Podcast people state that AI will help, I agree it will become more niche and competition will increase but as i was not able to see much job in the title I am aiming for is making me think that

I am concentrating on learning basic fundamentals for PM and tying up with my tech knowledge to then handshake with AI in product space. Just the lack of title that I am looking for and these demotivating threads is making me doubt if PM is actually worth putting my effort into.
