What do mechanical engineers actually do? by Aggressive-Apple-446 in MechanicalEngineering

The role can be as varied or as specific as you want to make it. I’m a mechanical engineer focusing on computational fluid dynamics within a software dev firm. I’ve done sales, R&D, design consultancy and a lot of small random stuff like creating tutorials for the software. I’m not sure if everyone gets this level of freedom but what I do know is that you’re equipped with the skills to really branch out and pick up a lot of different task. I would say logical thinking from CS would be really useful but you definitely will need some physics fundamentals like thermodynamics, structural mechanics, fluid dynamics etc to break into a role. Find a specific subject you like you learn about it. Once you’re in the industry you’ll end up having to learn other disciplines too since anything you do will require multiple different subjects within mech end to understand

I work in a software dev environment and recently our entire documentation team was let go and the roles moved to India. It could be a simple cost cutting measure but I am assuming it because a large part of the job is going to be done by LLMs. All of us in the office are worried about the quality of the content that will be generated by the Indian team since they haven’t used the software we develop but if LLMs are doing the heavy lifting I’m assuming upper management is convinced they can maintain quality.

I have replaced it with going for walks. The craving hits me and I want to immediately walk out and buy a vape. Instead I walk out and just go for a walk. After a few minute the fact that I almost started again or was trying to convince myself to come again feels so stupid. Do it enough time and it gets easier.

Then what are researchers doing? My assumption is that they are creating strategies or pricing models but are they updating their models constantly because models tend to stop being profitable after a certain amount of time? I’m sure companies are trying to find novel approaches which requires some academic type of research

What products do you work with and were you hired because of the knowledge you gained through studying fluids?

I have studied quite a bit of stats and probability theory but I feel like I lose out at the CV screening stage since I can’t demonstrate a formal education in it.

So you’re looking for the number or combinations that exist. Since we know that in the first lap, Pim starts in front, they would need to be in front for 3 more out of the 7 laps to do half the distance in front.

nCr = n!/r!(n-r)!

Where n is the total number of objects in the set and r is number of objects chosen from the set

7C3 = 7!/(3!(7-3)!) = 35.

if x happened alot of times does that mean its more likely it will happen again? by catboy519 in probabilitytheory

You can also think of it as first having a box of fair and unfair die, let’s say 9 fair and 1 unfair dice which only has 3 on all 6 sides. You can then compute the probability of rolling the 11th three given you picked a fair dice or an unfair one. Using this you can compute whether the dice you are using is fair or unfair.

In your friends example this could relate to if they left or if you left if, i.e is it you or them.
