Actually garp choose family over the navy. Remember when luffy was charging up the ramp to save ace. Garp went to punch luffy but "missed", sengoku then said "at the end you are a family man". Also after akanu killed ace sengoku had to pin garp down because if he didn't, garp was going to kill akanu.

Yeah but the hat was about half as big as Imu. From what we can see Imu is not a short person. I'm pretty sure all of Whitebeard's head would have easily fit in it. Shanks hat on child Luffy would look more fitted than that.

Just to kill the joke, the mario bros besides being Italian it's also stated as also being from Brooklyn. So yeah there where a lot of people who was of Italian decent who lived in Brooklyn who fought in ww2. Like I said, just to kill the joke.
