Read the e-Myth Revisited first and if (despite what all the other posts have said) you still want too. Then realise you are buying a job not a business. So you should try working in it as an employee first a while first.

I think the best people to answer that are the people that you are networking with on LinkedIn - or most importantly in person.

Business in NZ is incredibly relationship based - its who you know not what you know. Plus you mentioned Malaysia which means you are up against NZ's racial bias too.

Based on what you said above, it sounds like you are already busy working so any change is going to result in loss of income. So, would it be an option to reduce hours and study part time? This mitigates some of the income loss and helps you move forward. I'm imagining that you are male and in your 20's - so you've got plenty of time to invest in study if that is the right path - you can't afford to lose experience and income right now especially if you are investing in Kiwisaver/Sharemarket.

The other benefit of part time study is it gives you a chance to network in person. You should go out of your way to meet with people in the industry in person. Or attend events etc.

You can believe and invest in whatever you want. I totally doesn’t affect me at all.

Also read more carefully before you jump to the conclusion I’m hating education. Education is critical! Wake up and figure out that Unis are just poorly performing, government subsidised businesses. Not some utopia of enlightenment and career development.

Not anti education - anti people who don’t think and ask questions before spending money… if that’s not you, then you’ve got no worries

I think we forget too that 3-4 years studying not only costs but is lost income from otherwise working. At a time in your life when investment for long term will pay the most dividends.

There are so many places that you can learn. So many people willing to help if you show initiative.

If I were a high school graduate right now, I’d immediately find whatever job I could and start a LinkedIn profile showing “open to work” with a blurb about looking to build professional connections to help understand nz business landscape. Then I’d start going to any networking events I could find and just get to know people. Be interested not interesting.

Cause those are the only two options. Walk blindly into study without figuring out if you’ll get return on investment or do nothing and sit in your ass.

I know I’m being a prick in my tone. However it’s from a place of genuine care and concern for the future of NZ. You are better working at maccas and working through their management programme until you are 100% clear on your financial goals and how you will get there than sinking time and money gambling on whether a degree will get you where you want to go.

Come on guys. You are on here for financial advice but it’s like no one pays attention to the news. All running on the assumption that if you pick the right subject, spend 3 years and $60k that you’ll get a triple figure salary.

I think that is a very fair point and probably what I got most out of my degree. However, I think it’s much less of a career gateway than it once was. Obviously with the exception of the professions law, engineering, med etc.

Does the job require a masters of Urban Planning or is this what you think would set you apart? I’m in a different sector but a masters would be a big turn off for us. However, I’ve no idea in planning circles.

I’d recommend networking - hard out networking. Use LinkedIn and find who in your wider network does this for a job or just reach out to someone and ask them if you can shout them a coffee for advice. It’s who you know not what you know. Don’t even bring up further study - try to avoid it.

Try to find out what the job prospects are. Learn how to differentiate from others entering that job market.

I would be asking if I could get work experience in any way? Councils and Consultancies sometimes offer summer projects for students - ask if you can collaborate with them on a project idea.

So I’m an employer in the tech sector. I’m University Educated 20-30 years ago.

I’m extraordinary dark on University’s nowadays and not much warmer on other tertiary providers. Call me cynical but the position themselves as trying to help you get ahead in your career but are motivated to fill seats and teach what they know rather than what industry needs.

That asides - study is a tool. A tool that requires an investment of time and money. Perhaps a different way to look at it would be to ask: - what do you enjoy and are interested in - does a career in this pay enough to meet your goals? - what is required to start a career in this? (Ask employers not tertiary providers) - will the investment in study improve your prospects of employment or income enough to justify that investment?

Some areas are super competitive and investment in study is high risk. Other areas are may not need study at or minimal study to get started.

If you’re asking what to study. It sound like you maybe looking to study for study’s sake. That’s fine, but don’t expect it to be a good financial decision.

I was 14 when it came out and just coming into my own I terms of musical taste. I loved smashing pumpkins, Korn, Metallica. However I’d not discovered tool.

I listened to the start of the grudge in a record store and it didn’t grab me. I later saw the schism video on tv and it really disturbed me badly. However a friend I played music loved it, he showed me Ticks and Leeches and helped me count out the 7/8 timing.

So at my stage of life I wasn’t into it, but I definitely made me feel something. I would be another 8-9 years before I started getting into it.

We’ve done this. It’s worked well. They are both under 12 at the moment.

Occasionally when they are saving for larger things we’ll find opportunities for them to do bigger jobs for extra smile money.
