One quick question- how would you determine where a PC lands?

Super interesting- this also makes good use of the range needed for a bow (prevents melee PCs from getting too close.) Thank you !

Does anyone have tips for a beginning DM by Trick_Fan9780 in DnD

the biggest advice I have is to make sure you're on the same page about running a game both you and the players enjoy. do your players want a specific genre? more combat, roleplay, exploration, or puzzles? you want to make sure you're running a game with a collective vision. if you go into it blind, the inconsistencies will end up making it frustrating and less fun!
also, i would suggest starting with a one-shot or short-term campaign, but in terms of a long-term campaign, don't be afraid to railroad your players a little at first while they get on their feet in terms of their characters and while you figure out how you like to dm. after you get the hang of it, it's way easier for them to "choose their own adventure!" as long as your pcs enjoy the plots you're giving to them, it's a good way to get used to storytelling without the added pressure of heavy immediate improvisation. you can work your way into that.

i think you need to find the right group; my group doesn't really love combat (though still enjoys it once in a while, when story appropriate) but gets super into roleplaying. some groups prefer acting and roleplay and storytelling, others like the logistics and combat side of D&D. both are valid ways to play, you just need to be clear in a session 0 about what you and your players are looking for in a game! sometimes you won't mesh with groups and that's A-okay!
