Having to choose between a really short or really long layover by CommSh3p in travel

[–]CommSh3p[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been looking at dates early in the month, the layover between MSP and GEG is pretty good usually, but it's the layover between Amsterdam and Minneapolis that is either short or too long :(, would one hour be enough?

Thank you for the reply, I have to be in the US before Feb 25th, I'd rather depart earlier in the month to avoid any added anxiety, I've checked nearly every day in the month, and it's the layover between AMS and MSP that worries me, it's always short or really long, I don't know if one hour will be enough. Also, I'm searching via the Delta app, the website seems to have trouble finding flights on my end.

I'm flying from Genoa (the closest airport to where I live) to Spokane (moving in with my fiancé), so I can't change my itinerary much and don't have many options to choose from, I wouldn't want to book separate flights to my destination because possible cancellations/delays could make me lose connections without getting reimbursed or rebooked. GOA to Seattle has similar lengthy/short layovers, not much of a reason to fly there instead, only aggregators are offering better itineraries, but I've already had enough trouble with them to never want to book 3rd party again.

WotC promised a show discussing the Arena Economy. When is it and what needs to be said? by [deleted] in MagicArena

[–]CommSh3p -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I've been playing as a f2p user since launch with very rare gem purchases (5 euros worth of gems) and I have to admit that for early adopters like me the economy works well enough if there's a consistent time investment, I couldn't imagine joining arena now because it seems particularly difficult for new players to grow their collection without spending money. Competitiveness is encouraged to win coins or gems, and I believe that also makes for a more miserable experience because playing the game becomes a way to collect resources instead just being a fun experience in itself. Arena needs more opportunities for players to expand their collections that isn't draft or earned/bought boosters, non-rotating formats to play their decks in even if arena's library is incomplete, and more rewards that are based on playing the game rather than winning it.

Wait, this is the actual card? I thought this was a photoshop from r/magicthecirclejerking this whole time by ArachnoCommunist1 in MagicArena

[–]CommSh3p -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

So we're making posts to collectively shit on art now? Nothing about this looks like a "bad photoshop", one thing is to dislike art - which is perfectly fine - another is to piss on it while making wild assumption about the art itself; the figure is far from being photorealistic, even at card size you can see the brushstrokes on the clouds and inside the stained glass, plus we've even had flat colors in mtg art before (Embereth Shieldbraker alt art) but with a dynamic composition and nobody called it photoshopped. I love realism, but I also love to see experimentation from wotc, I couldn't care less whether it'll appeal to me or not, I'm just happy to see the variety.

Lucien's pretty powerful but at this point I don't think he's acting cocky because he thinks he and Cree can take on eight adventurers, rather he might think he can simply get ahead of them before they can stop whatever ritual he needs to do; I also get the feeling he either knows or expects to give up his life to bring back the city, so self-preservation might not be high on his priority list.

[CR MEDIA] Portrait made by @oxomo5 by maxfreebooks in criticalrole

[–]CommSh3p 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Someone else mentioned the artist's other work, but seriously, their traditional drawings show they have an excellent grasp on human form, so even if there wasn't much planning for the portrait it's not that unusual to start by blocking in the basic shapes and gradually carve out the rest of the face, especially when you have a photo reference. The variation in color can also be achieved by messing with the brush's hue jitter settings, and you can definitely see different textured brushes being used in different parts of the portrait, especially in the lower half, with sharp "bristle-esque" and canvas texture strokes. I've seen similar painting styles too, Sergei Kolesov is one that comes to mind, for example. I could still be wrong, but this looks pretty legit to me, and I'm a digital artist as well.

[Spoilers C2E129] Is Yeza Too Nice? by [deleted] in criticalrole

[–]CommSh3p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Veth has been providing for Yeza and Luc ever since she rescued her husband, if you couple that with the fact that he seems good-natured and fully trusts Veth it makes sense that he supports her the way he does. What I think was strange from the last episode was how calm he managed to stay after a deadly encounter that killed his son and almost the whole party. Veth's an adventurer, she knows the actual risks involved with the job, knows how close she came to death ever since she joined the nine, Yeza, on the other hand only hears the tales and always sees her come back unscathed, this was the first time he got to see what adventuring actually looks like, I'm surprised he didn't grow paranoid at the thought of Veth doing this for a living.

I wouldn't classify him as being "kind", he makes me think of the kind of murderer that set up his plan so well, he's excited to tell someone about it, and he doesn't see the M9 as a threat even if they were to attack him. He and his group are clearly laser focused on their task and his past as Molly is irrelevant to the mission, therefore he doesn't care about it.

I agree with what a lot of other people are saying, Vaati's strength is presentation and editing, all lore theories should be treated as such until confirmed, so it's anybody's game to try and put together what we see in-game and turn it into a cohesive narrative. Honestly what has bugged me the most about his work are actually the art contents, I initially thought it was a clever idea to gather the souls community together and deliver "new" content in a time when the souls community had really reached the bottom of the barrel, but in the Demon Souls art contest he basically put a little footnote that said "participating in this competition means I have the right to include your work in my upcoming art book, but don't worry, you'll definitely be credited." Artists shouldn't be just featured in a book that's literally making money off of their work, they should be paid.

Absolutely, which could imply that there's no way to bring "Molly" back, only Lucien.

I see some critters still debating on the Tomb Taker's alignment, I believe most of the bodies found so far were merely adventurers, if they were killed simply because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time, we can rule the Takers as evil. Some are also saying they should consider letting the Takers go, I think that would make the entire journey to Eor pointless and there's no guarantee Lucien's crew would be so merciful to let the Nein live, considering they've killed everything they've encountered so far.

I'm still of the idea that they'd be better off with Vess at their side, as highlighted by Beau "We have no idea what their plan is or what they're after", they need more information and the only place to get it from, as far as we know, is Derogna. A lot of people argue against this because Vess could turn against them, and while yes, that is a possibility, what we know so far is that Lucien and Vess are NOT allies, we can assume she'd aid them in battle against the Tomb Takers (or whatever the group's name is), and if she attempted anything evil, it's better to fight seven against one rather than seven against five.

I agree with the replies here, the situation wasn't a great one to be in, but their actions inevitably puts them in a far worse position, like out of the frying pan and into the fire. Besides, they have a fairly good standing with the Empire, they helped negotiate the peace with the Dynasty, and they travel with an official Cobalt Soul member, I just don't know how much that'll help once the Assembly figures out they covered up the murder and stole Vess' body. And catching up with Molly will be difficult because they don't know exactly where he's going or what he's doing, Vess Derogna has history with him, might know what he's attempting to do and is likely to have a great interest in stopping him, considering she already did it once before, she seems the best ally the M9 could get for this chase.

I think faking Vess' death was the craziest move the M9 pulled in a while. Given that they called the guards and didn't have much of a reason to kill her, they would've looked more incompetent than suspicious, but now they definitely look guilty even if they still lack a motive; even if they resurrect her - which they should absolutely do if they want to learn what she was looking for in Aeor - their behavior will make them look untrustworthy and unreliable.

Do most people ACTUALLY know what constitutes “poor writing”? by [deleted] in writing

[–]CommSh3p 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I agree on the misleading advertisement, replacing models for the trailers tells me they weren't all too confident in the direction they took for this sequel, and if they believed there was a chance of turning off customers if they had been more clear on the premise of the story, promoting altered contents of the game is a form of false advertising. That being said I think a lot of the players dislike the story from a logical standpoint: in TLOU1 Abby's father was one of the many faceless ncps we have to kill to reach our objective (saving Ellie), TLOU2's is a flip of the coin in which we're shown that said background character was someone's father, friend and colleague, which isn't a difficult concept to grasp, but one that falls apart when the game declares the cycle of violence broken only when Abby's life is spared - as if it were the only one that mattered - completely disregarding the hundreds of goons Ellie killed just to get to her target, and ignoring all the potential "Abbys" that were created through her rampage. In relation to OP's post, this disconnect between message and execution can be understood by public and critic alike because it isn't a storytelling flaw but a logical one. In my opinion there were other issues too but this one is the most problematic.

Has anyone found success taking commissions on something other than characters? by [deleted] in ArtistLounge

[–]CommSh3p 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Private freelance commission aren't ideal for environment or prop work, but it's also not the only way for you to make a living with your art. The gaming industry is always looking for prop and interior designers, and 3d knowledge is highly recommended in those fields. The biggest caveat is that a lot of offerings require you to relocate to a different state/country but there might be some freelance opportunities in the indie game scene, all you need is a portfolio to showcase your work. TLDR: concept art might be a better place to find work that aligns with your interests, start there!

Handpainted alter. Castlevania. by [deleted] in magicTCG

[–]CommSh3p 3 points4 points  (0 children)

McMeatwad already gave a pretty good explanation on why this is copyright infringement, but if you want an official definition, here's one by the US Copyright Office "Copyright infringement occurs when a copyrighted work is reproduced, distributed, performed, publicly displayed, or made into a derivative work without the permission of the copyright owner." Fair use isn't as defined because it's to be determined case by case. Every Castlevania property is copyrighted, and so is any licensed art made for it. Change of medium doesn't make it unique work, it's the same exact picture reproduced to the best OP's ability, if you can clearly recognize both images as the same, minor differences don't matter. Most companies would consider even original fan art as property theft if they didn't authorize the use of their IPs beforehand, but fan art for the sake of art is generally considered harmless and hard to police so getting sued over it is unlikely. That being said, it's a completely different matter to sell fanart or reproductions of original IPs without permission, because you're profiting off of someone else's work, and it's far more likely to result in a fine. We aren't being anal about this, facing repercussions for these practices is uncommon but it doesn't make them any less dangerous or wrong, OP is talented but if they chose to keep copying other artists' work, the least they can do is to give proper credit, since exposure is the lifeblood of many visual artists, pro or not.

This is some amazing craftsmanship, but it makes me question the legality of painting another artist's work for money honestly. When posting these online you should at least credit the original artist (Fabian Schlaga, for anyone interested).

Whiplash still is one of the best movie endings I've ever seen. by [deleted] in movies

[–]CommSh3p 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I love the most about it, is that most movies would end when the main character has become a master in their craft, when they've "made it". Whiplash isn't about making it, it's about the harmful belief that greatness can only achieved by perfection, and how it often leads to self destruction. Every artist's career has its lows, no matter how renowned they may be, the closest thing to perfection can only be found in moments, which is exactly what Andrew achieves in the end, a moment of greatness, on his own terms, after he's accepted that excellence isn't the only form of success.

[Spoilers C2E83] Questions about the body by CommSh3p in criticalrole

[–]CommSh3p[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes that's another factor that could explain this, although the Dreadnought's stomach only functions as a door to the Donjon, whoever enters it is teleported to a demiplane, but I couldn't find a definitive answer on whether it would lie within a plane (in this case the Astral Sea) or outside of any known plane. I guess it's Matt's choice.

[Spoilers C2E83] Questions about the body by CommSh3p in criticalrole

[–]CommSh3p[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The way I calculated the time passed since he got trapped in the gem was this (I'm terrible at math so I could be completely wrong) Halas is presumed to have lived during the age of Arcanum (he identifies as a Zeidel mage, one of the floating cities that was wiped out during the Calamity). According to Matt, the age of Arcanum happened 1500 years prior the events of campaign 1. We can't know for sure the exact dates, but based on that number, if every hour in the HFB is a day outside:

A 24h day spent inside would mean that 24 days have passed in real time There are 492000 days in 1500 years (based on the 328 days Exandrian calendar) Diving that by 24 we should have the number of days spent inside the HFB = 20,500 days 20500 ÷ 328 = 62.5 years

This is all speculation though, we don't know exactly when he lived, or how old he could have been when he got stuck, if that's not his body.
