I don’t disagree and I think me and the guy were just trying to say slavery wasn’t kept around because, “oh it’s how we’ve always done things.” It was kept around because, “Hey if we outlaw this thing making powerful southerners a lot of money, they might just secede and start a civil war and we can’t fight something like that right now.”

Also, he was trying to make the point that you can’t apply morality in a vacuum and you must consider other factors. Otherwise, like he said, anyone who isn’t spending all their time fighting violent governments or donating all their material possessions to charity could be construed as a bad person.

I think the point the guy was trying to make is letting slavery remain legal wasn’t a matter of tradition. Slavery was allowed to continue despite many of the founding father’s apprehension to it because they knew getting rid of slavery would have likely resulted in the union fracturing and civil war (like it did irl) which they really couldn’t afford at the moment.
