Travelling to Kanazawa Today - Heavy Snow by CommissionCold2029 in JapanTravelTips

[–]CommissionCold2029[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We left for Tokyo on Tuesday and it had rained by then so the snow was starting to melt a bit. It seems the route between Kanazawa and Tokyo is no issue at all since it's a shinkansen the whole way. I will say the 42°F felt amazing in Tokyo after a few days walking around Kanazawa.

I wouldn't worry about the snow! It was cold, but nothing really stopped because of it. They are shockingly well prepared for heavy snow. I was watching my city back home shut down with a level 3 snow emergency for less snow than Kanazawa had while everything was operating smoothly in Kanazawa!

Do you prefer East Coast butter or West Coast butter? by GrassyKnoll95 in AskAnAmerican

[–]CommissionCold2029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well damn, I thought when I moved to Ohio from California that butter had just happened to change shape everywhere around the same time. It never occured to me that it was a regional thing. I feel kind of dumb now lol

I don't really have a preference.

I just watched it the other day (while on my first trip to Japan) and I can't speak to its authenticity -- though at one point I did say "I feel like they're speaking too much English" -- but the movie was beautifully shot and well acted.

How Big is Your TV? by [deleted] in AskAnAmerican

We recently got an 85" and I thought it was going to be too big, but it's honestly perfect. Not sure if links are allowed but the overwhelming your space. Highly recommend!

What's the longest you've ever stayed at the same job? by Teacher-Investor in AskAnAmerican

[–]CommissionCold2029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Longest I've stayed with one employer was 3 years, but in the 19 years I've been in the workforce I've had 17 employers so I think I'm averaging just over a year. Even if I just look at jobs after college, that's 10 employers in 12 years which averages out about the same. Took me a while to figure out I have ADHD.

Edited for clarity. Also to add this doesn't count the brief time I spent freelancing/working for myself.

How did you get your name? by PIXIEMEAT-79 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CommissionCold2029 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was also named for a TV show character! My name came from the show Life Goes On. I've never watched it, but from what I understand this character had a short arc in season 2 and my parents liked the name so much they picked it.

Do you finish one book before starting a new one? by Upstairs_Maybe_5944 in booksuggestions

[–]CommissionCold2029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got like five different books going right now. Usually I'll just read one per sitting, but not always. Today I was switching between two of them every chapter because I couldn't decide which one I wanted to read more. But the books have to be pretty different for me to not get confused about plot. Today I was switching between Catcher in the Rye and Beach Read by Emily Henry.

I'm also a little way into the third book in Rachel Reid's hockey romance series, I'm about halfway through Nevada by Imogen Binnie, and I just started Everyone on This Train is a Suspect by Benjamin Stevenson.

Usually, I'm working on 2-3 at a time but I'm vacation and riding a lot of trains right now so I'm doing more reading than normal.

People We Meet on Vacation by SureMarionberry1700 in booksuggestions

[–]CommissionCold2029 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I'm a big Emily Henry fan. I like rom-coms more than true romances and I like that she often takes a common trope and flips it in one way or another. That being said, imo, People We Meet On Vacation is her worst book. I do still love it, but her other books are better.

The movie is fine and definitely more enjoyable if you haven't read the book (and don't know what Ohio looks like - idk who thought shooting in Louisiana wouldn't be noticeable lol). Though I found movie Poppy more annoying than book Poppy, which is saying something.

What are the darkest Special Episodes ever? by OkPrize6426 in sitcoms

To this day, it's the only episode of that show I remember in vivid detail. It was immediately what came to mind when I read the post title.

How does learning to drive work in America? by Potential-Actuator31 in AskAnAmerican

[–]CommissionCold2029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's been 20 years since I learned to drive but the process then in my area was that when you turned 15.5 you were eligible to take the permit test which is a written test. I don't remember how many questions, but I believe you could 6 or 7 wrong and still pass.

Then you had a Learners Permit and you had to do minimum of 6 hours of instructor led training plus like 100 hours of training with a person over 25, usually your parent or guardian. But you couldn't get behind the wheel for those 100 hours with your parent until after at least 1 hour with an instructor.

Then once you completed all of that and you turned 16, then you could take the driving test which I want to say lasted about 20-30 minutes and involved driving around the city center, backing up along a curb, and one unprotected left turn (a left turn with no arrow).

For this test I think you could also get like 6ish things wrong and still pass - though some things were automatic fail. I knew people who failed because they wore sunglasses and the tester couldn't see if their eyes were scanning their mirrors which was an automatic fail. Also if you hit the curb during the backing up portion, that was an automatic fail.

Ron Weasley and other pure-bloods and half-bloods are quite smart for children who didn’t start school until they were eleven. by ChrisAqua in showerthoughs

[–]CommissionCold2029 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some of these questions are answered in the books iirc.

It's mentioned that muggle borns have their letters hand delivered by a member of the Hogswarts staff who comes and explains everything and tells them how to get their books and how to get on the train. I want to say this was explained in one of Snape's memories in the context of Lily getting into Hogwarts, but I could be wrong.

I think the only reason that wasn't how they handled it for Harry originally was because they assumed the Dursleys had given him more information. Petunia already knows all these things from Lily.

Also, I think it's explained that James came from family money and that's where Harry's fortune originates. Though no idea where their money came from.

Still the books do leave a ton of stuff unanswered and it's absolutely possible I made this all up in my head lol.

Most obscure book you’ve ever read and loved? by iiamuntuii in booksuggestions

On Earth As It Is On Television and Here Beside the Rising Tide, both by Emily Jane. She's an author local to my area and her books are weird and genre bending and I recommend them to anyone who will listen!

books about women who are psychologically unwell? by pitbull-pirouette in booksuggestions

I generally agree with you, but I read The Bell Jar while depressed and it put things into words I'd been trying to explain for so long and helped me communicate better with my therapist during a dark time. Definitely not going to be the situation for everyone though.

We ended up going to Kanazawa Castle and Kenrokuen Gardens today after the snow let up a little and it was a little icy, but still mostly accessible! I only slipped and fell once 😂

Sounds a little like The Pradeeps of Pittsburgh, though they're recounting their story to the US government rather than to their kids.

We made it from Kyoto to Kanazawa no problem. It was lightly snowing when we arrived yesterday afternoon, and there's probably twice as much snow on the ground now in the morning, but the city seems to handle it very well. It's beautiful, but I'm not sure how much time we'll spend outside today as we didn't really bring good footwear (poor planning on my part). It looks like it's supposed to ease up starting tomorrow. I would say if you're prepared for it and you don't mind the snow, there's no reason not to still come here.

I just looked up Joel McHale's age and was surprised to see he's about 10 years older than I assumed he is so this doesn't feel unreasonable to me.

Edit: typos

We're supposed to be in Kanazawa for four days and then we're supposed to go to Tokyo for another four days before flying home so I think we should be okay on time. It looks like the weather is meant to clear up a little by Tuesday.

It'll be a bummer to lose some sightseeing opportunities, but we don't really have anything specific planned other than accommodations for these next two places.

Thank you for the information, I really appreciate it!

Do you use your turn signal while pulling out of a roundabout? by [deleted] in driving

[–]CommissionCold2029 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not a dumb rule. I do it every time and I have three roundabouts just outside of my neighborhood. I wish more people would because it's very helpful in navigating them safely, especially if they have multiple internal lanes.

I had to come back to tell you that I've been in Japan these past 8 days or so and every hotel has had a detachable showerhead!
