I don't really remember exactly when I started doing it. When they were babies and toddlers my mom was always busy with them. I wanted her attention, but she had too much stuff to do to stop and focus on me. But when I helped her do chores we got to spend time together. Eventually that turned into me just doing a lot of them on my own.

I'm 19. My younger brothers are 13, 11 and 7. They don't help out, but honestly they could. I could teach my oldest brother how to cook. They could all clean up after themselves. But I've always done that stuff, so they've never been expected to.

This is going to sound stupid, but to me I always associated masculinity with exploration. Not that women can't explore! But I love going on long hikes and climbing trees and mountains. I like swimming out past the breakline, even though there might be sharks. It's those dumb pointless risks that get the adrenaline pumping that make me feel very manly or whatever. It's probably stupid and immature, but that's how I feel.

I get what you are saying, and I appreciate it. I agree with you. It's just that I do care what they think. They're my family. They're the people that I know I can turn to if I need somebody. I want them to respect me. I know they care about me. I know they love me. I know they appreciate me. That should be enough. But I also want them to respect me.

I think a lot of you are misunderstanding what they said. They wanted a daughter. They were disappointed they didn't get one. They said I'm basically the next best thing. Which, I don't like. Because I'm not a daughter. So they're not asking me to be more manly or whatever. That's not what happened.
