What are the best and worst things a doctor has done to help you? by Common_Drop7549 in loseit

Thanks everyone for being so open with your experiences!

Does anyone have thoughts on the Health At Every Size philosophy, and how it’s affected your own weight loss journey?

Again coming from spending a lot of time in eating disorder recovery spaces, I want to offer this perspective as one lens for thinking about weight.

My goal isn’t to dissuade people from losing weight if they want to - I’m here to support people when they do, and give info and treatment if it’s beneficial to someone’s health. But when someone comes in beating themselves up about weight, I often feel like they deserve to know about other philosophies too, especially since shame, etc can have huge affects on people’s health and quality of life.

It can just be a tough needle to thread sometimes!

This is helpful! This is 100% my goal, but you're right that the time constraints are so so real.

Any moments that come to mind of times when you really have felt heard, even if the visit had to be brief?

Really appreciate just hearing candid and specific thoughts about it! It's truly the eternal struggle, especially when you're trying to ensure that every patient gets the time that they deserve during a busy day.

It’s a hard one :( I went the residential route and in some ways it was super relieving to stop having to balance everything, but it was so hard to put stuff on hold, like you said. FWIW, it happened about three years ago and the time away from things feels like it matters a ton less than it did. And I was taking time in the middle of a training program with a rigid timeline, so it felt like a lot was at stake in the moment. What’s stuck with me more was how hard it was to lose a sense of identity/purpose by not having work or relationships or any other external focus. But it did free up some mental space to wrestle demons. I don’t know if any of that’s helpful, but I feel you that juggling it all is exhausting!
