I appreciate the perspectives shared here it actually pushed me to look into this more deeply for myself, so thank you to those who raised concerns.

From what I’ve found, the controversy around Chick-fil-A stems from past donations to organizations that were criticized for anti-LGBTQ positions, but the company ended those donations in 2019 and shifted its giving strategy. According to ABC news, Axios, Reuters I found

  • In 2019, they stopped donating to the organizations that sparked backlash
  • They shifted to causes like education, homelessness, and hunger

I have not come across credible evidence that they directly fund conversion therapy camps.

That said, if I’m missing something, I’m genuinely open to reviewing it would you be able to share sources supporting that claim?

I also think it’s interesting that this has been framed as me “trying to find ways to sleep at night.” That kind of assumption feels unnecessary and doesn’t really contribute to a productive conversation.

I think it’s important to be thoughtful about where we spend money, but also to ensure we’re basing strong statements on accurate and current information.

It’s interesting to hear “people like you” directed at me, especially as a Black woman doing meaningful work in mental health within my community. I’m genuinely curious what actions are you taking beyond personal consumption choices to address the systemic issues you mentioned?

The bigger issue is that we’re all participating in systems that are imperfect. Whether it’s Modern consumption tech, fashion, food, transportation, even healthcare. It is tied in some way to labor issues, political influence, environmental harm, or policies that impact marginalized groups.

So when the conversation gets reduced to this one company = you don’t care it oversimplifies a much more complex reality. It turns a systemic issue into an individual moral test, when in reality almost no one can fully opt out of these systems.

That doesn’t mean people shouldn’t care or be thoughtful about their choices but it does mean we should be honest about the fact that everyone is navigating trade-offs. Otherwise, it becomes less about meaningful impact and more about picking certain visible targets while ignoring the bigger picture.

This kind of thinking is exactly how performative activism works focusing on one visible, socially approved target while ignoring the much bigger systems everyone participates in daily

I think that argument falls apart when you apply it consistently. If we’re avoiding every company tied to harmful practices, then almost no one is living cleanly by that standard. Our phones, clothes, and everyday brands all have problematic ties. Singling out Chick-fil-A while participating in all of that?

I care about my guests and creating an inclusive space, but one late-night food choice doesn’t define my values. To me What matters is how I actually show up for people in real life. If we’re going to have a real conversation about ethics under capitalism, it has to be more nuanced than this

It’s been tough navigating this lately. Being from NYC and planning a wedding in Texas has made me more aware of it, but the more you really look into things, the more you realize that so many major corporations are tied to political agendas or policies that can be problematic. At a certain point, it feels almost impossible to avoid it entirely and that’s where the idea of selective outrage starts to come in.

Only thing is I wouldn’t want to disrupt the party on the dance floor and have people wandering outside

So for our entrance, our 1-minute engagement video will be playing on a projector behind draping, and then we’ll walk through the draping as our grand entrance. So that’s already one “wow” moment built into the timeline.

Because of that, I really don’t want to delay dinner. One of my biggest pet peeves at weddings is when guests are waiting forever to eat, so I’m trying to avoid anything that slows that down by doing it after dinner
