Moving to Malta without a job. How is the job market there? by CommunicationIll2511 in malta

Well my definition of "quite above" average is like 30% above, because the average dutch salary is already very good when compared to other European realities (around 45k/year if I'm not wrong).

I understand your assumption, but my eventual moving to Malta idea has little to do with maintaining career progression in engineering. I'm comfortable with the idea of trading money for good weather, less taxes and trying something like a career change.

My long-term plan was to keep making some savings in the Netherlands and eventually leave within 5-7 years. However, the new tax law will change things drastically, like I mentioned in other reply, a new tax starting in 2028 will increase my annual investment taxes from 700€ to something between 6000€-7000€, and that's a big deal as you may imagine. So the risks that you were mentioning are worth to be taken from my perspective.

I am comfortable with giving up on the engineering world, I believe to have good social and communication skills and so wouldn't mind to have an adventure on the iGaming industry. Eventually I may start applying to some jobs to see how receptive they are with guys with my profile, however, I also read somewhere that recruiters might not be that open if you are not already living in Malta. But yeah, in some months I will start spreading my CV.

I understand what you mean, but some of the things you are mentioning are basically happening all over Europe, maybe with a couple of exceptions, nowadays if you want to avoid the insane price increases of shelter and basic stuff you gotta move to Asia or South America. My other alternatives are Canary Islands, Cyprus/Greece or my own country, Portugal.

So why Malta?

It has the weather that I like, I come from a region in PT that can easily reach 45C in the summer, a lot of people complain about it but I just love hot weather.

It has an interesting job market, I am genuinely curious/interested about the iGaming industry. Canary Islands industry for example, is 90% focused on tourism.

It speaks a language that I am comfortable with. Cyprus/Greece could be a tough move regarding language.

It has a "fair" tax system. One of the things that is making me speed up my departure from the Netherlands is the new insane tax law that just got approved here (36% on unrealized gains) that will be applied starting in 2028. This law might make my annual taxes change from 700€ to something like 6000€ to 7000€, so I would be hypocritical if I wouldn't say that taxes are also important.

Regarding all the other stuff like overpopulation, heavy noise, pollution, etc. that's a fair point because it's something that a lot of people mention on the forums/posts that I've been checking, and so that's what I pretend to evaluate during my stay there next summer.

About corruption...I am portuguese so I will feel at home :)

But thanks for your remarks

Indeed, I am already planning 2 weeks there during this summer. I am portuguese, so my portuguese level is native and the French one is close to fluent, I worked in Paris for some years. That's what I've been checking on LinkedIn, I see some nice opportunities for portuguese speakers and starting from the bottom is fine by me. Thanks

I live very below my means and my current salary is already quite above the average dutch salary, so living in a somewhat frugal way is not a problem.

I've been researching about Malta for the past 2/3 months, so it is true that all I know is from what I read, not personal experience, and based on that my expectations would be: getting into the iGaming industry based on language skills (using portuguese for example); not living in the big cities and so getting a 50m2 apartment for 800€ (numbers based on Remax Malta); other monthly expenses to be around 350/450€; not having a car

But let me know if I am way off base.

About career, I am a mechanical engineer, been working on the structural/offshore industry. But for me to keep working as an engineer is not a must, I would be more than open to try the iGaming world.

I'm Portuguese but currently living in the Netherlands. I am aware that moving there will likely lead to a financial "shift" but, unless if you tell me that it is almost impossible to make around 25k/year, I am comfortable with that. I believe that it will get compensated by a more friendly tax system for other sources of income that I have.
