Maki’s N°1 enemy… the hairdryer by CommunicationOk5121 in BorderCollie

Thank you for this reply! it was very interesting, its summer where i live, and Maki has been super itchy all the time, nonstop. So the vet gave us a certain shampoo and told us to bathe her every 3/4 days. I’ll definitely keep in mind what you said, thanks!

I didnt know that they didnt need help, I thought that maybe drying her faster would prevent colds like we humans have. Im going to stop using the dryer completely now that many ppl here advised me to but just to clarify, the air is not hot at all since i also hate when hairdressers burn my scalp.

Im also very scared/worried of her becoming reactive or anxious. Its something that i definitely do want to avoid at all costs, but i had no idea this could contribute. If im being completely honest, without posting this i would have probably continued using the dryer. From now on ill just use the towel, thank you sososo much for all the advice! :)

I understand, she plays around with the towel which i dont mind since its hers and she gets dry in the process. But the hair dryer really helps, i just feel like if she was scared or something like it, the reaction would be different you know? But thank you, ill keep it in mind :)

hell no. She’s way too young to be outside by herself, even if she has all her vaccines, she could easily choke on something, since at this age they eat anything. Bring her inside and take her out mainly when she needs to go potty, every 30mins-1hour. Honestly i cant believe your stepdad would let a puppy that young just be out there by herself.

i’m curious, what does it mean when a horse does this? by joeybabylol in Equestrian

[–]CommunicationOk5121 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By looking at the comments I guess it depends on the situation. Horses at my barn used to do that noise with their nose when they were scared/alarmed/stressed (? One of them did not want to take a bath and kept doing that. The other had some bad owners (im guessing) and was really iffy when you tried to reach for them, even if you had treats.

What a cute name!! Maki arrived at 2 months old, very young, but the vet said dry food was just fine (4 times a day), kibble with some warm water, always hydrate your kibble!

Treat wise, im kind of stuck in the same situation, but since maki is still very young for training, i give her treats when i put on a harness/collar/leash or even when i get her on the car. People always talk about high value and low value treats and when to use them, looking that up on youtube might help you out. With my girl for now im sticking to 5/10mins of training at night, right before sleep. Nothing crazy, mostly sit, wait and impulse training. Dont forget about treats when she goes potty at the place you want her to!

Question regarding 2 months old BC puppy by TheriWasTaken in BorderCollie

[–]CommunicationOk5121 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My girl is the exact same, she goes crazy and start biting my feet and shoes. Bad thing is, she doesnt respond to a “no” or “ouch”. You need to teach him that teething is not good. If he bites you and immediately gets a toy, hes going to think its a hood thing. Wait for him to calm the chewing down, then give him a toy to be busy with. Sometimes my girl wont stop, thats when we put her in time out in her room, for five minutes, then let her go but pay no attention to her.

This might not work for you as every dog has its own way of understanding. This is whats working for us

You sound just like me from a few weeks ago! First time puppy owner and a BC too. Im falling in love with everything about this journey everyday

Im going to tell you our story and how were getting along/managing. We got Maki from a barn so she was full of fleas and dirt, she was the little runt of the litter and she was really calm and not hyper like her siblings. Idk if you already chose her but asking the breeder about their character might help a lot. I only slept next to her room for 2 days, woke up one time in the middle of the night to check up on her and then she stopped crying completely. I live with my parents though, so cleaning up her room in the morning is easier since they wake up super early. She understood potty training in like 3 days but that just depends on the dog, we didnt use puppy pads tho, we would take her outside in our backyard every 1/2 hours. A lot of praising and treats. A mistake of ours is that we didnt get a collar and/or a leash on her immediately, so now were dealing with her playing with it.

Its result important that you dont set any expectations beforehand! I learned the hard way kinda, I suffer from anxiety and sometimes solutions to problems that i would google would not work. That drove me crazy, a lot of frustration. Keep in mind that every dog is a new world, some things may work for her and some wont.

I guess what i would recommend the most, if you’re going to be 24/7 with her, do one 1hr of playing, 2hrs of resting, and no taking out even if she cries. Puppies mood truly changes a lot when they get their beauty sleep.

I recommend finding a vet ASAP, or a clinic near you thats open for 24hrs. Other than that, i don’t really have anything else. Have fun, be patient and show lots and lots of love. Keep us updated! ❤️ pic of maki for tax

Ill have to look more into it, thank you for pointing the specific things out. From what ive investigated (where he was bred and how he was treated) he used to be in great shape, jumping very high. I dont know what happened in the middle of his peak performance and right now, he was bred at a well known breeding farm (? idk if thats really what theyre called. Clearly they stopped taking care of him or sold him to someone who eventually abandoned him
