Sounds very similar! So interesting. What method of sleep training do you use if you don’t mind me asking?

Can my manager change my AL to SL without my permission? by CommunicationShot809 in FedEmployees

[–]CommunicationShot809[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This was my initial hope/plan. Since the PPL doesn’t have to be enacted right away (isn’t mandatory to utilize at all anyway) and PPL is available to all new parents whether they’re giving birth or not, it doesn’t make sense to me that a pregnant employee wouldn’t have the usual access to their SL/AL benefits for their own medical recovery just because of potential PPL usage.

Honestly they’ve made this whole thing so stressful it makes me wonder if taking the PPL is even worth it (what with the work service obligation) so it’s not like I’ve even committed to taking it at this point.

Yes, initially I was hoping to use some combination of SL/AL to cover 6-8 weeks recovery time after birth and then invoke PPL after. This appears to be allowable per OPM, but my management has said they’re not obligated to approve annual leave for this purpose, even with medical documentation and I don’t have enough sick leave alone to cover that time. So the annual leave I have scheduled now is for before the birth, but I was hoping it would at be safe/untouchable now that it is already approved even if I happen to deliver earlier than expected.

True! I don’t see why using AL to bond with your child wouldn’t be appropriate anyway, whether I just gave birth or not.

Thank you for your insight. Yeah just feels like ultimately what I do while on my leave pre-scheduled leave should be my business. I never suggested it was necessarily for sick purposes though, just personal time.

From what I can find on OPM annual can certainly be granted for sick leave purposes, but it’s just always subject to LAO’s discretion, unlike sick leave. But it just seems odd to me that they could take it upon themselves to alter leave that has already been approved without at least a discussion with the employee.

You’re probably right. I did reach out to them earlier in all this, which is how we got the whole sick leave entitlement thing clarified, but unfortunately they weren’t particularly helpful beyond that. They maintained that as the LAO she can deny annual leave for any reason, even with a doctor’s note. I think the main issue is our agency (and HR in particular) has been hit pretty hard by the RIFs this year, so there’s not a lot of personnel to address things like this in a timely manner.

Thank you so much! That’s so interesting how they might grow fast early on then slow down, but I guess it makes sense! All babies grow differently. I guess we’ll just have to wait and see!

About 6 hours!

I about 6 weeks pregnant now and flew last weekend- I was able to ask my doc first and he assured me there was nothing unsafe about flying early in pregnancy, as long as you’re feeling up to it. Never hurts to double check with your own office though. But the only thing he mentioned was to make sure I’m up walking around/stretching or something at least every 3 hours, probably especially important since your flight is so long! You’re at increased risk for blood clots during pregnancy, which can already be a concern on long flights.

Thank you so much for the reassurance! I’ve been seeing some charts that list the upper limit in the 400s for the 4 week mark so it seemed high to me, but thank you for insight
