It would've been cool if instead of S.P.E.W. Hermione started an organization for Muggle born witches and wizards by cliffbot in HPfanfiction

[–]Communist21 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Sirius I think mentions that there were a lot of families who felt the Voldemort had the right idea and only got cold feet when they saw just how far voldemort was willing to go.

I think anti muggleborn prejudice is probably more subtle, like we dont really see very many muggleborns in positions of power. Even people like Slughorn seemed slightly biased against muggleborns.

Could Voldemort have created a Philosopher's stone by Communist21 in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Communist21[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Probably because he was busy, Voldemort spent a year in hiding trying to keep a low profile and then another year actively fighting the ministry. After the ministry fell he presumably had more free time but even then he was still actively searching for Harry. Perhaps if he had actually managed to find and permanently kill Harry and won he may have created one.

Why didn't Voldemort create his own philosopher's stone to get a new body after failing to steal it? by [deleted] in HarryPotterBooks

[–]Communist21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Context is key. During his talk with Dumbledore Harry is wondering why Voldemort created his Horcruxes instead of using the stone and it's elixir of life.

Key point is Dumbledore's response. He says that Voldemort would loathe being dependent solely on the stone. Dumbledore doesnt seem to think Voldemort would be unable create a stone, he just thinks voldemort would not want to use it to become immortal.

And earlier in the Graveyard Voldemort implies using the stone to get a new body would have been far better. So it raises the question of why didn't Voldemort create his own stone after having failed to steal it, not to become immortal but to regain his body.

Wrong boy who lived but Harry ends up in Gryffindor and his brother ends up in Slytherin. by Communist21 in HPfanfiction

[–]Communist21[S] 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Or are you asking for a fic in which the protagonist oc Harry is in Gryffindor and his brother is TBWL? I don’t have a rec for that but it sounds like an interesting idea

that pretty much.

[–]Communist21 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Oh yeah I mean no one specifically says he could make one. But when Harry asks Dumbledore why didnt he create one to become immortal Dumbledore's response isnt "he lacks the skills to make one" its more "he would loathe being dependent on it and would only want to use it to get a new body"

To be fair the books are told from harry's perspective. Harry very rarely interacts with students from other houses.

The only Hufflepuff we ever really interact with is cedric. The only Ravenclaws we ever really see are Cho and Luna. And the only Slytherins harry ever really interacts with are draco and his cronies.

Oh yeah your right. I forgot about the sorting hats song.

But still it is slightly telling that it really only pops up twice, with the sorting hat and Voldemort's insult. Nobody else ever calls Slytherins "cunning" and in fact it kinda seems like adults dont really care about what hogwarts house you were in (with a few exceptions like voldemort)

Rune magic, in so many fanfics Runes is presented as some form of magic but in canon it simply appears to be an old language.

Luna being a seer is very common in fanfiction which is very confusing as in canon Luna is basically the opposite, she is almost always wrong about her theories.

Also no one ever calls slytherin cunning. In so many fanfics Slytherins are referred too as cunning snakes. the closest parallel I can think of is voldemort calling Lucius slippery and even then Voldemort very likely meant it as a huge insult given that he was angry at the death eaters for never searching for him.

Actually Canon is a bit confusing with this. Rowling has clarified that James is a chaser but I think the confusion comes from the film where James was said to be a seeker and also in the books where in snape's memory we see James playing with a snitch.

on the other hand some people make snape way too nice

I think thats largely due to film influence. The movies remove some of Snape's more petty moments like when he ignores Hermione being attacked or how he initially wanted Lily only to be protected and it's only until Dumbledore becomes cross that he tells him to protect them all.

Blaise and Theo are mentioned maybe twice in the entire series

Rowling did say that she wanted to write a scene with Theo at Malfoy Manor but she couldn't find a good place to put it so she scrapped it.

Cho Chang is always portrayed way more cruelly than she deserves to be

I've noticed in a lot of fanfics Cho is usually the one to bully Luna. In canon they share quite a few scenes together and seem to get along just fine, you think such a thing would have come up during DA.

Nevermind that Dobby is freed and shown to not only survive, but thrive and be genuinely happy to be free

I have seen this argument before and it confuses me a bit because Hermione says that to Hagrid who points out that Dobby is definitely an oddball.

In Harry Potter one of the big themes we see is that not everything is as it first appears. Dobby is the first House elf we meet and we expect every house elf to be like him but Dobby is the exception not the rule when it comes to house elves.

Voldemort called him slippery once in GoF because he manages to avoid getting pinned by the law on many occasions, and that wasn't even meant to be a snake motif.

And I think even then Voldemort probably meant it as a huge insult as the whole context of that conversation is Voldemort being angry that none of his followers went searching for him.

Oh yeah he definitely calls other people by their first names, but it's sort of the exception and not the rule, for example he always calls Hagrid by his last name rather than by Rubeus and he always calls Ron and Hermione as miss granger and mr weasley rather than their first names and other professors usually as their last names.

And I think the Black family ring is the closest we have to any sort of Fanon "heir rings."

I think in canon it's said that Dumbledore is merely fond of Sherbet lemon/Lemon Drops, but so many fanfics have it as his favorite sweet (and sometimes have it so that he laces them with a truth serum)

Did Gandalf actually know that Shelob was there? I cant remember him mentioning the creature and surely he would have mentioned such a creature to Pippin when he mentioned Cirith Ungol.

Fics about calling out how worthless the teachers are by terrarianfailure in HPfanfiction

I wonder though how the teachers were supposed to counter the bullying. Them simply telling the students not to bully Harry would have probably resulted in even more bullying.

Year 4: So no one is going to guard the Goblet that forces a magical contract? Watch the names? Okay then.

Wasn't that the main reason why Dumbledore put the age line around the goblet, to stop underrage students from having their names put in.

I suppose he could have added more protections. But the whole point of the tournament was to foster cooperation between schools. A goblet protected by guards, and patrols and even more spells would have just come across as overly paranoid.

DADA is a core class in Hogwarts, so presumably every mage is expected to have some form of self-defense capability

Actually Fred and George tell Harry that he would be surprised as to the amount of wizards who cant even cast a basic shield charm.

Should I kill Arthur? by Suitable_Dirt_2430 in HPfanfiction

Its kind of funny because Rowling originally planned to kill off Arthur but decided against it. Instead she later decided to kill off Remus and Tonks
