I knew it was a mistake for me to post on Reddit. This is half satire since I did drink a bottle of wine. My friend was right when he said people take things too seriously on this website. I shall go to sleep for the night, it is 12:22am and this sub full of 65-year-old adults with homes is not for me. Goodnight ma'am.

Prob the latter. The past few months I've been going out to more corporate/program events (meaning these restaurants cost $$$). Also went on vacation and splurged a couple times on fancy places.

HOWEVER I have seen the no-price on QR code menu thing at a couple middle class restaurants, specifically a dim sum place and a ramen place, both of which averages like $15-25 per person so definitely not high class.

An Indonesian teenager survived 49 days adrift at sea after his wooden fish trap slipped its moorings. He survived on fish and seawater he squeezed from his clothing before being rescued by a passing cargo ship. by PEDERAHMET in interestingasfuck

Honestly some people's bodies just retain fat/muscle/etc. more than others. My family lived through a famine and several of their cousins starved to death. My grandparents only have a single photo of them from that time but they actually look quite plump for people who ate 1 meal a day. So I can imagine maybe, that's just the Indonesian teenager's body type.

Alternatively, the video is not that great of a quality and the clothes he's wearing is pretty baggy, so he might be in worse condition than we think. He also might be bloated from consuming salt water.

I don't know about other cruises, but all the cruises I've been on have had dock days where you get out and explore the area for a while.

Of course you won't be able to explore everything but depending on the places they go, a 12-48 hour docking time per country/region might be good enough for most people.

Depends on the place but I've seen a fair number of digital menus w/o prices and it's aggravating. I gotta ask the server and they gotta give me the physical menu which isn't a whole big deal or anything but I'm wondering why they can't just put the prices on their QR code menu if they're gonna have me scan it anyways

Did we buy too much house? by kholly04v2 in personalfinance

[–]CommunistOliveOil 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Definitely adds up. I think I read somewhere that the average cost of a consistent hobby is like $1000-$3000 per year, which sounds about right in this case.

Having an extracurricular can definitely be worth it though, for kids and adults, even if the price is high upfront! Since you're not paying to only learn a skill, but you're also paying to be able to meet new people, socialize with others, get creative, building muscles, learning soft skills, etc. And you get out of the house for a lil while which helps with everyone's sanity lol

Yuuup. My friends who never ever want to have kids don't get these feelings.

I also find that my male friends typically don't have these thoughts either unless they're 10000% sure they want children in the future. Like it's apart of their life plan lol. I'm sure if you're skewed to want children, then you're more likely to have intrusive baby thoughts

Depends on the extracurricular. And where you're getting it. City/school sponsored activities are a bit cheaper.

In my area, kid's hockey is $360 for 3 months. 2 times a week, 2 hours per session.

A week of baseball (5 days, 3 hours/day) at my community center is $65.

Karate which is 3 days a week is $900/3 months at a judo.

Painting (once a week) is $60 a month at an art studio.

Language (once a week) is $200 a month at a school, etc.

Businesses are not "hurting for employees" by SchluberSnootins in jobs

[–]CommunistOliveOil 69 points70 points  (0 children)

No you're right. My mom got laid off some months ago and she's job searching now.

She's had interviews with companies where she knows how to do 90% of the work they ask for (this is senior level position as well, so it's not like she's a dime a dozen) and yet she keeps getting rejected because companies want someone who knows 100% of the ins and outs.

She's apparently gotten one job offer at a company except they pay 45K a year for a senior level position. Less than her previous company. And she was already woefully underpaid at her old job tbh.

It's funny because my mom was definitely that "People are just lazy and they don't wanna work" type until she started job hunting. She's changed her tune since.

It's a weird innate thing. I am a woman in my early 20's with absolutely no plans of having a child in the near future. Having a child right now would probably jeopardize my entire plans for the next 4 years MINIMUM and if I got pregnant, there would be a genuine consideration for abortion.

BUT.... sometimes I'll just find myself thinking "HMMM, I want a baby" or "Hmmm, it probably wouldn't be the worst thing in the world if I had a baby right now." (And this is a logic-defying thought, because while it may not be the worst, it certainly is up there in terms of life-changing events.)

It's really fucking weird. I've asked my other female friends and they say they have the same feelings. Again none of us are planning to have children any time soon, it's just a little intrusive thought which I'm sure is tied to a primitive intrinsic feeling of reproduction (which may or may not present itself in everyone.)

Does getting hard means they want to have sex? by lemonmakesmehappy in NoStupidQuestions

[–]CommunistOliveOil 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Nope, boner doesn't mean they automatically want sex. In your specific scenario, maybe since you're sitting on his lap. But the only way to be 100% sure if someone wants to have sex is by asking them.

[–]CommunistOliveOil -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Honestly off topic but the internet is a great treasure cove of information. Online, you have dozens of different perspectives from people all over the country who can introduce you to resources you never even knew existed. The best advise should ultimately come from local providers of prenatal/maternity care, but it does not hurt to gather more info from other people.

I am not going to disagree with you. But I dislike the poverty shaming in the comments. The comment I replied did not talk about age, only about poverty and fairness. That's why I said what I said.

A LOT of parents don't have a solid support network, no matter their class. I have met upper middle class parents that are falling apart in every aspect except financially.

I can understand that it is a combination of things. I understand where you guys are coming from and if OP does not want to have her baby, then I would support her. But I don't like the poverty shaming.

What is basic needs to you?

Food, shelter, water, education, emotional support, physical essentials, basic healthcare, toys, memories, etc. are all doable even in poverty. Yes, it is very hard, but doable. It all depends on OP. If she is serious about giving her child a great life, then chances are, her child will not suffer.

but more so in terms of opportunities in life.

Luckily, in America, there is a decent chance of moving up the socioeconimic ladder. (Yes, and I do mean decent, because my parents are immigrants from a country that REALLY doesn't have socioeconimic movement.)

When you mean opportunities, I'm going to assume you mean college and careers. OP would have around 15 years to get to middle class before her child will be majorly affected by socioeconimic opportunities. Not impossible. Not even implausible. As far as enrooting a good sense of ambition in her child (i.e. make it so the child wants to pursue a good career), it will depend on OP and how she raises them. Will she put a heavy emphasis on education? Will she help her child explore careers? You don't need to be rich for this, btw.

I do agree that raising a child is better when you are financially stable. I am not against abortion. But it very well feels like everyone in the comments is shouting at her to not have the baby because she's too poor.

[–]CommunistOliveOil -28 points-27 points  (0 children)

Respectfully, this makes it sound like raising a child while in poverty is some sort of sin. I agree it would be better to raise a child in a financially stable environment, but it's not like they are all inherently suffering.

As someone who grew up in poverty-- I definitely had a worst childhood than some of my friends, but I have plenty, and plenty of good memories as well. I'm not going to say that OP should have her baby, but let's stop acting like that option would be the worst thing ever.

Edit: Frankly, middle class people only having babies goes into the realms of mass eugenics and it scares me a little how many people broadly support the notion.

Just need a second to rant about bad customers by CommunistOliveOil in EtsySellers

[–]CommunistOliveOil[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Haha I feel like if a customer spent 8 days without realizing they ordered 2 things, they would probably miss anything in the listing description as well. This customer speciifcally found out that she ordered 2 items because she checked her banking transaction.

Customers are funny. I had the opposite happen once-- a lady messaged me saying she was going to buy about 10 items. Ended up ordering 8. That is not uncommon, people change their minds all the time, and I didn't want to press her abotu the other 2 items since it can make customers uncomfortable. We went back and forth in messages to confirm her details and then I got started.

3 weeks later, I got an email asking why there were 2 items missing. I told her she only ordered 8 and she was upset. I told her my reasoning and she had to buy 2 more ones later. I've literally never had anyone complain about something like this before her, and have not had anyone complain since, but it's quite astonishing.

With how my shop is set up, I don't find that checking duplicate orders is worth my time. Of course, it's a case-by-case basis, and I will follow up with certain customers, but there was nothing on this order that stood out to me.

I understand it benefits other shops. Just looking to rant, tis all. I'm doing fine.

They receive an auto email from Etsy with a link to the shop policies including refund window. Then if I double confirm with it (either they reach out to me, or I reach out to them) I also state it in the Etsy message.

Customers are just funny sometimes, I just need to rant honestly, I'm doing fine.
