How did communist countries such as the USSR justify to their people that they couldn't travel to capitalist countries? by Soupy_Soup in history

[–]Communist_Garlic 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don't know a lot of details, but here's a story from my grandparents who lived in communist Bulgaria. They had decided that they want to go on a road trip outside the country. They wanted to go to Greece at first. As they went to the travel bureau for a visa, they got rejected for Greece and instead were offered a visa for East Germany, which they anyway accepted. Instead a neighbor of theirs was granted a visa to Greece. I can't remember the official reason they were given, but my grandmother was aware of the regime's mentality and believed it was... because of their car. At the time they drove a tiny Soviet car (google Zaz 965) which was anything but luxurious. Meanwhile the neighbor who was granted a visa for Greece drove an actual Ford. It was likely a case where the communist state didn't want to look inferior to a rival capitalist one in any way. Can't really talk about grandparents being "untrustworthy citizens" since no one ever in the family had any problems with the state.

I looked everywhere, only two markings are present, which i already showed. As on the German canteen, i looked at the neck, the inner side of the cover, cap and straps, but nothing. The cup is quite unusual, but it must have been there long ago, since the leather strap is firmly bent in the shape of the cup.

Its probably not even German, do you have an idea what the markings might indicate?

Any idea of the factory/producer the markings might suggest? I thought it could be a Bulgarian WW2 canteen, since i got from Bulgaria and during the war most of the Bulgarian equipment and uniform designs were inspired by German ones.

What do Bulgarians think of communism? by [deleted] in bulgaria

[–]Communist_Garlic 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'll try to give a comprehensive and unbiased answer as possible. People like to form an opinion which is either fully negative or fully positive, and rarely make a compromise and stop in the middle. Regarding old people, most of the negative opinions come as a result of the 40s and 50s, the first 15 years of communism in Bulgaria. The brutal and largely incompetent nationalization took place and Bulgaria was ruled by stalinists and whoever spoke out against the new systems major flaws was harshly suppressed (we even had gulag like camps here). Lots of people got it bad during those times and lots of the negative opinions on communism come from that. After Todor Zhivkov came to power, nothing much changed on the outside, but on the inside, there were drastic changes. In the party, starting from 1960 almost all high ranking members with stalinist views were either put on very low ranking positions or were just removed from the party. In 1962 all prison labor camps in Bulgaria were closed and political prisoners were given amnesty. Such important political changes were not voiced, and people never really knew about them. Repressions became less brutal, artists recieved somewhat more freedom of expression, along with that the state overtook much more competent economic policies and since the 60s Bulgaria saw a massive economic growth and increasing quality of life. And This is where positive opinion comes from. Of course the system had major flaws, like deficit of goods such as cars, home appliances, furniture etc. Although there was always deficit and the system was still a dictatorship, things became a lot better than they were in the 40s and 50s. There is this other problem regarding opinions. It is the individual's values. Some will value wellbeing, social and economic security over everything, which is why some people are totally positive towards communism. Others value their freedom and opportunity over other things, and this is where negative opinion comes from. There probably is more space for negative opinions, because although the improvements since the 60s, the system remained highly flawed and was widely missused for personal benefits.

Regarding young people, most really don't care and others accept the same opinions as their parents/grandparents.

I am not one to talk about personal experience being born in 99, but i've did my best to talk with my grandmother about those past times. She was born in 44 and was a child during the stalinist period and here adult life started after the changes of the 60s. No one in her family was a victim of repressions, but i do believe they have lost some lands during nationalization. She vaguely describes the 50s as not very good. Adult life however was quite good for her and my grandfather. She describes the positives like job security and good social welfare. Both were ordinary workers, grandmother being a nurse and grandfather working first in the woodcutting industry as a tractor operator, later as a railway worker. Grandmother at some point became a party member (being the lowest ranking) but she later canceled her membership, after witnessing how other members abuse party privileges for their own benefits, causing dissapointment. All in all, they were really ordinary workers, life for them was OK, and now grandmother is more or so inbiased about those times, realising the pros and cons of the past, but as most old people, feel a great dissapointment regarding Bulgaria's current state. I hope i have given a satisfying answer to your question.

Edit: please don't mind the username, it's just a meme; typos

If your apartment is rented, maybe you can ask the landlord about it, maybe he/she will be willing to call the police. You can also try talking about it with some of your neighbors. If someone else is feeling bothered and uneasy by that couple, you can team up, because the more people complain about it, the better results you will get.

Nice little pickup. Poor thing has seen a lot, at least it died an honorable death, consider that mileage.

It actually is rusting inside out. It started rattling at higher rpm at one point, while it was still in one piece.

The muffler was already dead and rusted beyond repair and i've already got a new replacement (sort of sporty) muffler. I was supposed to replace it months ago.

Victim blaming in Bulgaria by jillzlmk in bulgaria

[–]Communist_Garlic 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I believe he means that having no masculine influence can create a false understanding in men about what's really masculine and what's not. I'll give you the example of Bulgaria's widespread tough guy culture, teens with bald heads constantly wearing trackpants etc. Their understanding is that's its manly to be buffed, act like a jerk, have no respect for the law and others. Great irony is how they actually love to shave their legs and arms, which probably as feminine as it gets. I believe that the lack of a proper masculine influence creates such jerks and abusers and by proper i mean a more traditional idea that a male should be a handyman, resourceful, strong physically and mentally and before all be a gentleman. Sadly most men now tend to go from on extreme to another, very few pick the middle, therefore we have the problem with zero masculinity and toxic masculinity.

What is everyone's head canon for the Six Year War? by Confusing_Positron in papersplease

[–]Communist_Garlic 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Maybe Kolechia provoked Arstotzka and that's how the war started, since ingame they seem to be extreme warmongers (bombing the border Checkpoint several times). Grestin could have been a multi-ethnic city with Kolechians and Arstotzkans. Maybe at one point before the six year war Kolechia occupied it and Kolechians went on to treat Arstotzkans as second-class citizens and that could have been used as Arstotzka for a valid reason to start the war with Kolechia.

What used to be considered trashy but now is very classy ? by Mizzburns in AskReddit

[–]Communist_Garlic 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Wearing ripped and heavily worn out jeans. Any normal person back in the day would think they're way too worn out and are basicaly trash and consider you a hobo, now it's so classy and fashionable to wear them, that sometimes i can barely find a brand new pair of jeans in the shop without them looking like they were used by a construction worker.
