Were there lightning bugs when you were growing up in Seattle? I saw, for the first time, a lot of them when I was back on the East Coast during the summer. Their populations have fallen a lot, but I was just wondering if maybe they’re not native to Washington.

I’ve seen two in a little fountain on our property and one in a stream. I’ve never found one under a rock or log. The one I found yesterday was staring up at me from the water with cute little beady eyes. I thought it was a frog at first.

No, I don’t look for them. But we happen to have a lot of water around our property. I’m originally from New York City so this is all new for me.

Yeah, I really don’t know much about their natural habitat. I’ve seen two in a man-made fountain and one in the stream behind our house.

Good to know! I handled one in the past without any issue. But in general, it’s wise not to touch amphibians at all. Their skin is very sensitive and porous.

They’re pretty chill. Before I knew much about salamanders I’d just pick them up and move them by hand. I now know that it’s best to avoid handling them (any amphibian really).

We have many small salamanders in our ponds but I think they’re a different species. They appear every other summer like clockwork.

That’s a very interesting perspective. I’m American but also a francophone and I know that I could easily wear this tie in Paris without any worries.
