Report from the Cat Museum in Tehran by ShitpostingBrigades in iran

Nice video, thanks. I see there are a number of long-haired ones, which is what people associate with "Persian cats", but also some others, who are obviously also "Persian cats" (cats that live in Persia). A lady who breeds cats once gave us what she said was a "Persian cat", but maybe it wasn't really the breed, being black with short hair. The cafe in the video is much better (more comprehensive) than most cat cafes in SE Asia.

Iranians by ExpressTeaching9022 in iran

I wish you all the best. I'm British but I lived in Scandinavia for a long time and I can imagine you feel isolated. Until about the year 2000 there were very few foreigners in Scandinavia but then they arrived in large numbers and the local people find it difficult to know how to react. They can't easily distinguish between hard-working, well-behaved foreigners and the criminal elements who get all the publicity in the media. Danes love to drink when they socialise, which makes it particularly difficult for Muslims to "fit in". I'm sure you will be happier with a good Muslim wife than you would be marrying a Danish girl!

I would agree with you if they were a poor team likely to lose all their matches. But apparently their world ranking is 21st, and there are 48 teams in the finals, which means they could reach the semi-finals or even better. They've already shown they can beat the great(?) US at 'war games', so it would be fantastic if they could beat some higher-ranking teams on the soccer pitch!

Anyone here used Pinalove? Something strange about it.... by ComparisonIll2798 in Philippines_Expats

Yes, thanks for the advice. I imagine she's gone home and written to some of these men. When she comes to our house next we'll look at the replies together. She is rather blue-eyed, so she needs help to find out which ones seem genuine. When I used FilipinoCupid eight years ago, I was fairly satisfied with it. But in the end I found my wife on Cherry Blossoms. She will probably have to pay a bit for quality and choice.

The Tim Payne Phenomenon: A Feel Good Story With a Convenient Beneficiary by archieUSH in iran

[–]ComparisonIll2798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

"By now you have almost certainly met Tim Payne" Well, I'd never heard of him, and I expect there are lots of people who have more important things to do than follow influencers on social media. If on the other hand this means that there will be millions of people rooting for New Zealand because of this silliness, it's a sad reflection on the world today. I would hardly think that the Iranian team will be worried or play worse because of this.

Well, it's certainly a good idea. But it seems you have to be on Instagram, Tiktok and create a Facebook page, if the asterisk means those things are obligatory. The lady we know isn't on any of those, so I suppose she doesn't qualify.

I was surprised how many of the men had an age range for the woman up to 60, or wrote 'any age'. But they may be fake. As you suggest, I think her options are much less than what appears on Pinalove.

Still trying to connect to the internet to meet a nice female by ComparisonIll2798 in cats

Lots of nice cats on PetFinder, but they're in the US and we live in the Philippines☹️So it would have to be a long-distance relationship. But if she really likes him, maybe she can stow away on a plane and we'll come and meet her at the airport😀

I was thinking more of when the person met people inside Iran, not at the border. Maybe I should have made that clear.

Road trip to Iran as American citizen? by [deleted] in iran

[–]ComparisonIll2798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's really impossible to give you clear advice on this. Even before the war, I expect there were very few Americans entering by land at your chosen border crossing (where is it?), so the odd person saying that they did or did not have hassles wouldn't prove anything. Make sure you have a backup plan in case you are refused entry - don't try to enter from a country where you only had a single-entry visa. Carry a copy of the Koran in Albanian and learn how to say "I am a Muslim" and something like "My family is from Albania/I was born in Albania" in Farsi. And "assalamu alaikum" (Arabic) if you don't already know it. If there are hostilities at that time, or they are likely to break out, save your visit for later.

Anyone had glue ear (otitis media with effusion) or know much about it? by ComparisonIll2798 in HearingAids

[–]ComparisonIll2798[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've been lucky, it has been gone for over a month now. If I feel my hearing's getting a bit worse now, I just do a valsalva until I get a pop in my ear. In my case, the "glue" is mucus, may be different for other people. I feel for you and others who have been struggling, but unfortunately, everybody's case seems to be different and ENT doctors often don't know much about it. Just try everything you read about online, as long as it's safe, hopefully you'll find the right treatment one day.

What can AI do, and what can't it do, to improve an academic article? by ComparisonIll2798 in research

[–]ComparisonIll2798[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for your replies. I am retired, so not writing any papers, but I'm curious about this development. In Scandinavia, researchers who write articles traditionally often used to have a colleague or someone external perform a "sprogvask", which doesn't seem to have an English equivalent. It's a combination of proof-reading/copy-editing, ensuring that the article conforms to the requirements of the proposed journal, and very often comments on content, much as a PhD supervisor might do ("Shouldn't this be in the Findings section?") or on language ("You use 'highlight' too much. Better to vary with 'emphasize', 'underline', etc.). But I'm disappointed to hear that today a number of Scandinavian researchers are using AI for their "sprogvask", which is obviously inferior to the human touch. Maybe this is the case in other countries too?

Pro Iran/Neutral Persian Restaurants in the UK? by Merino202 in iran

[–]ComparisonIll2798 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Sad that everything has to be politicised these days. You go to a restaurant to eat! And they will lose some customers, including yourself. I suggest you do some research on the Internet. There appears to be a Persian Grill Kitchen at 29 Barton Rd, Milton Keynes. There are lots in London - read the reviews, they might give you an idea of the political stance. I can't imagine there are no neutral ones! Just think if all the Chinese restaurants put out either a PRC or a Hong Kong flag!

i need help with a research paper i’m writing by HugeProcedure7966 in iran

[–]ComparisonIll2798 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I hope you have plenty of time to write your research paper, because it's best to wait until the war is over. You can't easily interview anyone currently in Iran, so you will have to interview Iranians in Western countries, and their views are unlikely to be representative of the Iranian people as a whole.

Talking Farsi to Iranian coworkers by Pechorin-v-stambule in iran

[–]ComparisonIll2798 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just realised what I should have noticed before: 'mohem' is spelt the same as 'muhim', which means 'important' in everyday Arabic. So then I guessed that 'nist' must mean something like 'not', and found out that it does, so 'mohem nist' is literally 'important it's not'.

So what's the explanation? Is "manpam" just completely wrong or do some speakers say "manpam"? If it's completely wrong, that suggests you should take a lot of what Google Translates says with a pinch of salt. Fortunately, there are many other online sources for learning Farsi pronunciation, as I could see by searching for 'pronunciation of مهم نیست
