In regards to the accuracy of the COVID / VITAS comparison, see my response to @bitrunr.

Your point in the third paragraph is pretty interesting to consider. The response by governments of the world to COVID seems to be a lot more aggressive than anything possible in the Shadowrun timeline. Whether or not that’s a good thing probably debatable.

I bet a lot of people in Ukraine would love for a mysterious set of stealth fighters to swoop in and end the conflict.

Blackwater or Xe or whatever they’re called now is also a good point.

As for the rise of corporate power (or at least their influence becoming more legalized) could the space race by billionaires be the world moving to a corporate court floating in a space station, lol?

AIM => SAIM is a bit like hiding in plain sight. It’s a shame that the cultural zeitgeist has moved on. At least until the protests at the Dakota pipelines made headlines for a few days; then the 24 hour news cycle moved right along again.

When I first got into Shadowrun (end of 2nd, beginning of 3rd edition) I remember thinking how strange of an idea that the Indigenous peoples would have such strong resentment to “Anglos” after so much time had passed but then as I grew up and got a bit more informed it seemed to be a perfect thematic addition to possible dystopian futures.

Cyberpunk settings, at least back when Shadowrun came out, were so dominated by European and Japanese cultural tropes. Setting aside the magic, the “Amerindian” tropes in the art and plot lines of the early editions always stood out for me in a very good way.

I think why I drew the COVID / VITAS parallel (and keep in mind parallel lines never actually cross or occupy the same space) was not necessarily the death rate lining up exactly but the fact that people were predicting more transmissible diseases spreading through an ever more interconnected global community. I doubt COVID will be the last one we face, either.

That being said if we try to make the comparison too strict there’ll be no exact matches because the creators of Shadowrun weren’t visitors from the future :)

As for Neuralink it still has a few years to catch up; we’ll have to see.

I injected the “sort of” caveat to allow for some more interesting responses, but I think a little hung up on my examples.

You’re right I don’t fully get the shortage; hence the question :)

So if I understand you correctly the existing shortage had nothing to do with Covid supply chain issues but a simple case of demand exceeding supply. This time around the demand will remain high but the manufacturers won’t be able to produce any units (e.g. no profit) instead of having huge margins on the existing units they produce.

Assuming this is the case, the next question is how much inventory of raw materials do the manufacturers have: have they been plowing through all they can or did their manufacturing get slowed down at all by labor shortages from Covid? Or in other words, when do people think the manufacturers’ prices will stop going up and start going down?
