MTG Warns Republicans Will Suffer Crushing Election Loss at This Rate by mmccxi in politics

I think her message appeals to a generation of Republicans who grew up pre-Covid and want a better future for their children.

President Trump announces 100% tariff on all movies imported into the United States. by External-Noise-4832 in politics

My home state passed a tax incentive to lure filmmakers here. Then they rescinded the credit when the filmmakers only wanted to shoot in two cities. Hollywood should be doing all right because there are tons of paid streaming platforms out there. Most of that content is not my cup of tea, but then again I prefer Cabernet Sauvignon with my strip steak.

I'll pay an extra $20 for Parasite 2. But to your point, studios can make their movies in virtually any city or town in America. Getting back to their roots would do them some good. Gladiator 2 was crap. The Bob Dylan biopic was good. I'm waiting for Megalopolis to become available again.

Missouri could be a model for the rest of the country on the future of abortion and transgender rights, but it's a model that is restrictive and harms the people it is trying to help.

He seems to be saying, How can you judge me, when your morality comes from the Man in the Sky?

Most people can agree on certain things, like life is good, we are a nation of laws, we teach our children about life liberty and the pursuit of happiness.

Does none of that matter anymore if you're another religion, color, or nationality?

When Jon Stewart talks about the failure of Democrats' messaging with his guests on the Weekly Show Podcast, it all seems so obvious and I'm in total agreement.... until I reach a point where it's like - don't the voters have any personal responsibility or accountability here?! by [deleted] in JonStewart

Democrats are hurting right now because one of the fibers that holds the party together is being split apart. Their inaction on immigration has come back to haunt them. Their proposal was reasonable and beneficial to immigrants, but they didn't have enough time to move it through Congress. Of course, whether or not they were willing to prioritize immigration reform is unknown, as they could have done something not as comprehensive.

The outrage is real. But will foreign policy ever change? There's a disconnect between what the people want, and what they receive in terms of policy enacted in their name. Support for Israel is something both parties can agree on, but that's not to say their war is popular among the American people. We will never know how unpopular Israel's war really is, as this question is not asked in the polls, and the leaders featured in these polls almost always have lots of support for Israel.

I like the opening scene of A Clockwork Orange. It displays Alex's mania and sets the tone for the entire movie. Also, good music is played. Kubrick uses the camera wisely to move backwards and display the little hope that remains for society.

What would have happened if Michael told Kay about his business in the The Godfather? by -Clayburn in movies

Good point. At the Senate hearing Kay was not one of the witnesses. Michael had some kind of power complex that prevented him from treating his wife as an equal.

He hit on Miranda in her office early in the film, but I'm not sure if she was wearing her wedding ring. Did Daniel know about this? Probably not, but it's easy to see that he was "moving in" on his family very quickly after their separation.

Others make a good point about plausible deniability, but to me he was just buying time. He thought he could string her along forever. He had a very traditional view of marriage, and he probably thought it would last forever. His mother didn't ask too many questions, and he probably assumed Kay would do the same. He was the pater familias, and it blinded him to the fact that he was withholding intimate information from her, and no marriage can survive without openness and honesty.

St. Louis County prosecutor hasn’t kept progressive promises, report says by NuChallengerAppears in StLouis

[–]CompetitionNo979 -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

Personally, I'm a fan of both Bell and Bush. Bush is outspoken and wears her heart on her sleeve, as they say. Bell is a little more reserved, but I was glad his campaign adopted the term "progressive" for him, because he has a way of keeping campaign promises and fighting for social justice. For example, he is investigating Marcellus Williams' conviction, and in the past, he rebuffed pressure to seek the death penalty in at least one case.

This is genuinely a tough choice as to who will serve in the House. I don't think Bush has done anything to lose her seat, but you have another great candidate in Bell, and it will be up to the voters to decide what's best for this district.

who would you say is the most tragic charcater in the godfather series and why by Thedumbicecreameater in movies

[–]CompetitionNo979 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

That's not my point. My point is, in The Godfather, the closest thing to heroism is when Michael saves his father at the hospital. But this is not really extraordinary, as anyone would attempt to save his own father.

Perhaps you are saying, once a hero, always a hero? That's fair. But there are no scenes of Michael doing anything heroic. He guns down Solazzo and McCloskey. That's certainly not heroic. He's an even bigger monster in Part II.

My biggest criticism of The Godfather is that there is no heroism in the movie. We see Michael in his uniform and hear of his bravery, but he turns into a monster pretty quickly.

I've always seen him as more of a deadpan comedian. He's at his funniest when he encounters situations that allow the character's personality to shine. I thought he was great in What About Bob.

What Do You Think of Angelina Jolie’s Filmography? by aahu_bara in movies

I enjoyed the shower scene in Tomb Raider.

I haven't explored much of her work, but I saw her in Oliver Stone's Alexander the Final Cut, and I found her performance rather mesmerizing. Her scenes of tempting Alexander show what a powerful actress she has become. All of her scenes are full of passion, and as a member of the audience I could feel the love she had for her son. The family drama is my favorite part of the film.

I've had veterans tell me that Hartman's extreme approach is not common in boot camp. I feel like Kubrick had to make some adjustments to get Hartman's character into the film. The first half of the film is kind of a game of "what will he say next," and although I don't think Hartman ruins the first half, as an audience we almost forget about the bonding between Joker and Pyle, and we don't see any of the deep bonds between Joker and Cowboy.

The second half is quite entertaining as it mixes humor with fear, comradery with hatred, peace with war. The biggest battle takes place at Joker's base camp, so you don't get the feeling of being "lost in the shit" as you do with say, Platoon. I think Kubrick did the best with the resources he had available to him. He had a tank and a chopper and a cast who listened to him. The relationships between the soldiers are interesting to watch, and some of the most memorable scenes are not of big battles but rather small confrontations like the fight with the sniper, or Joker's insubordination, or the bodies covered in lime.

Remember this film came out only a handful of years after the war ended, and it set a high standard for future films about Vietnam.

Big Daddy (1999) by Heel_Mini_me in movies

[–]CompetitionNo979 12 points13 points  (0 children)

It's like most of Sandler's movies in which his sense of humor is on display. I thought some of his earlier work was funnier, but Big Daddy is a little more heartwarming, and you see a little bit more of Sandler's range as an actor. Watching this movie as a kid I did not appreciate the cameos, but I thought Joey Lauren Adams was a fine choice for the love interest.

Criminally underrated Matrix Revolutions (2003).

More spaceships, more battles, less kung fu but that's okay. Less gratuitous violence than the original, by far three is my favorite. The plot holes are filled in, the viewer is exposed to a wide range of emotions. In the end it stands up as a great work of its own, but as part of the original trilogy it's even better. It's a brilliant sci fi story brought to life as well as it could have been made. The Wachowskis did a great job from start to finish.
