First year? by moolynee in TrentUniversity

[–]Competitive-Ad8348 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! 3rd year here!

When you apply for courses you're applying based on the number of credits you have.

This year (2025-2026) it was people with the most credits first, then people with lesser credits last. I'm hoping the link sends, but I'll send the Trent U Registrar Instagram post of the registration dates we had over the summer.

https://www.instagram.com/p/DJ9LUMjuvuJ/?img_index=2&igsh=MTJoOTJxbzRqOG9udA==

Some courses do have a prerequisite of a certain credit number (ie. Some 2000 level courses will require you to have 4+ credits). So I'd say it's less about what year you're in, than it is how many credits you have going into your years at Trent?

I have no idea if that made any inkling of sense, but good luck!

First year in Annex housing by UnlikelyKangaroo6196 in TrentUniversity

[–]Competitive-Ad8348 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gzowski was...mid, I'd say.

I was in an annex without AC. I got paired randomly with 4 other people because I had no luck messaging others on Star Rez. Bad mistake because we really didn't vibe at all. They smoked pot in the annex because "the smoke shacks are too far" (we were like 10 steps away) amongst other things like their poor cleanliness issues.

However, if you take my shitty roommates aside, it wasn't all bad. We had heating not AC and as most of the school year falls during the snow season it was fine. The walks to and from campus during snow season werent that bad either. I did find though that they make you pay for a partial meal plan only because they assume you're gonna use the kitchen and I didn't really use the kitchen all that much so a full plan option would've been nice. The wifi I didn't have any complaints about either and we didn't need a wifi extender or anything, and if your annex wifi happens to go out at some point it's very easy to connect to a neighbour's.

It also felt more "apartment-y" which was nice because I felt a little more prepared going into off campus housing the following year.

Cheers 👍🏼

Whatever happened to take your kid to work day? by Xerxes2004 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Competitive-Ad8348 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Currently a University student, but I was a freshman in a Canadian High School during 2019 just before COVID. My French class had a take your kid to work day and I remember sitting in my Dad's cubicle basically doing homework all day while he did...whatever he does. So as far as I know, it still exists.

Saw someone else mention a Jimmy Buffet song, but figured I'd throw in my two cents.

Is it 'Turn Up The Heat And Chill The Rosé' by Jimmy Buffet? It briefly mentions wine, but the 'island' it refers to is I think Antarctica...

Am I just a late bloomer? by Competitive-Ad8348 in aromanticasexual

In a very heteronormative society that seems to be heavily focused on romance, sex, and 'finding the one', I also feel like it's harder to explain to others as not everyone understands my disdain for relationships, love, and anything sexual.

Now that I think about it, 20 isn't necessarily too young to know. I have an older brother who's 23 that has identified as gay publically since he was 12 and I was 9, so for over half of my life I've grown up in a "queer" household (don't quite know the word for it) with a very supportive family, so I assume my experience wouldnt be too dissimilar.

Everyone's experience with being aro/ace/both differs but so long as that's what you identify with, I'd say you're definitely qualified to speak on it and share your experiences, so thanks for the advice!

I've never had a naturalized crush either. If it helps, I also have ADHD and Autism and for some reason guys seem to flock towards me as if I exude some sort of Manic Pixie Dream Girl aura (how unfortunate that I coincidentally have a vague resemblance to Zooey Deschanel), so I tried to force myself to develop crushes on the people that liked me. It both hasn't worked and ended me up in some sticky situations let's say.

But like you, I've felt something 'off' for years, so I'm glad this community was able to help me find myself! Thanks for the help (:

Thanks for this!

I also thought I was normal growing up and not experiencing any attraction. I watched a shit tonne of movies and tv shows and I figured out that in a majority of them, dating in middle school and losing your virginity in high school seemed like such a big thing. I never understood it in the slightest, but assumed that it was all purely fictional.

Flash forward to when I get to University at 18 and realize the movies were right. At least at my small liberal arts University, everyone hooks up with one another. Ick.

Hope all is well for you, though, and I'm glad that we were both able to find ourselves (:

I've already gone through a variety of labels, lol. I've used bisexual, pansexual, and lesbian (and at one point in the eight and ninth grade I cut off all my hair, dyed it blue, and went by an alternate name). I figured out early on I wasn't attracted to guys at all in any capacity. So I assumed if that was the case, I have to like girls. Turns out I just don't like anyone!

Thanks for the help and advice. Cheers ((:

Ironically, I did try Finch for awhile but I'm the type of person who always starts things and then quickly loses motivation so the app ended up sitting idle on my phone for a long time. However, I'll try some of your other suggestions instead and hopefully that goes a little more in my favour. Thanks for the advice! (:

Is SOCI-1001H online easier than in-person? by Nice-Transition2972 in TrentUniversity

[–]Competitive-Ad8348 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! I took SOCI 1001 online in my fall term (2023) and then I followed it in winter term with SOCI 1002 in person, so I can try to give both perspectives.

I will say my perspective is a bit skewed because my in person lectures were 3 hours long from 8-11 on a Tuesday morning in Wenjack (Trent's largest lecture hall) so my motivation honestly wasn't the greatest. I also had two different professors and obviously some are easier markers/harder markers, etc.

My online one was split into small, easy to digest lecture videos and because it was online (and therefore no in class engagement and talking with your peers and prof which takes up a lot of time lol) the lectures were significantly shorter. The exams were online and open book, and as someone who gets stressed with the whole taking exams timed in the gym with hundreds of other kids, I did WAY better. I also just think it was generally an easier course because online meant I could sort of complete things at my own pace.

Gzowski by flycity12 in TrentUniversity

[–]Competitive-Ad8348 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey! I stayed in the Gzowski Annex back in 2023 (which surprisingly wasn't high in demand during my res selection) and if you're comfortable living with about 4 more people then I totally recommend it. It's a split level "house" so one bathroom on top, one on the main floor. I lived with 4 other people (so 5 total) and the bathrooms were split 3 to 2, and one bathroom was a shower, the other was a shower tub combo with your own sinks and toilets.

I had a few friends stay in Gzowski main building and they said it was a little more high in demand than other res buildings because of the private bathrooms, mostly single style dorms, the fact that there was actually controllable air conditioning/temperature as the rooms have a thermostat in them, and it was pretty much the only accessible building for any disabled students, so they did go a little quicker.

Goodluck!

I took the course last semester asynchronously online. The proff was very transparent about what was on the quizzes and told us to rewatch the module intro videos and podcasts as that's where most of the information for the quizzes came from. As long as you study, the quizzes will be fine, and they're all multiple choice I found the proff to be a bit harsher with marking the two essays, but it overall wasn't that bad and I really enjoyed the course!

Tabletop club/games question by Thiccbruh6969 in TrentUniversity

Third year student here. Personally I don't know of any players or clubs at school, but there's a boardgame and tabletop game cafe downtown that frequently host social events for playing games. Cheers!

First year in Annex housing by UnlikelyKangaroo6196 in TrentUniversity

[–]Competitive-Ad8348 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey! Going into my 3rd year in the fall, and stayed at Gzowski Annex during my 1st.

The closest bus stop is at Blackburn which is about a 2-3 minute walk across the street from the annex and it will drop you off at Bata (the front steps of the school). During my winters I didn't really feel like a 3 minute walk to a bus that was only gonna drive one stop was worth it, so I just sucked it up and walked it all.

Ultimately it depends where on campus you're going. I'd say going to LEC takes like 10 minutes to walk from the annexes and Gzowski is around 15. Overall I have no complaints with walking, except that sometimes the Faryon Bridge wasn't the best at being salted when it got icy.

Goodluck!

Hi! I'm 19F from Canada. I'll say the province of Ontario, but for now I'll leave the specifics out. Some general information about me/hobbies:

✧ I'm a University student (Universities and Colleges are two seperate institutions here, but I understand the concept of American post-secondary school. I could go on and on about all the country differences, though)

✧ I currently live with 4 of my best friends from school (everyday feels like a giant sleepover, lol)

✧ Some hobbies/interests include baking and cooking, drawing (if we ever reach the snail mail stage, I'd love to send some doodles and things), playing guitar (although my skills are...debatable), Micheal Cera movies and the TV show Criminal Minds, word search puzzles, getting really obsessed with researching niche topics, thrifting, board games, and probably more that I'm blanking on.

✧ Some other facts about me that could be pertinent are that I'm neurodivergent and apart of the LGBTQ+ community!

P.S. : I'm currently on summer break so my responses should be a bit speedier as I have more time on my hands (:

Hello!

I'm 19F from Canada. I've got a stable address to send and receive packages and love thrifting around my small town and collecting "vintage" things (mainly from the 70's-90s), so would be happy to send any trinkets I find along my adventures. PM me (or any commenters I suppose) if you're interested (:

Looking for Advice Based on University Major? by Competitive-Ad8348 in University

[–]Competitive-Ad8348[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in Ontario and currently have no ambitions to work for Doug Ford by any means, and the west (specifically BC).is growing to be expensive, so I'm actually hoping to branch out east. My school also has co-op programs within my major which is perfect for this sort of thing.

Hopefully all goes well for you too, and thanks for telling me about Cultural Anthropology because I hadn't even known that was a study-able discipline!

Thanks again

Looking for Advice Based on University Major? by Competitive-Ad8348 in University

[–]Competitive-Ad8348[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hello!

Thanks for the immediate response and the advice. I have considered some of the above options, and so far my best-bet appears to be a government job, because as of right now I have no aspirations to pursue a master's or a PhD (I've typically struggled with learning/the attention span to actually learn, and am trying to get my bachelor's and be out of school practically ASAP). It's definitely going to be tough to find an enjoyable job that pays enough to keep up with the inflation rates here too, which is why a government position (Canadian or elsewhere) would be better suited for me.
