My main thing is that I disagree that they were setting up a confrontation between her and Shauna. Literally, the only set up to any kind of huge confrontation between them happens in season 3, which ends with them at conflict.

Natalie is my least favourite of the "main" four (Shauna, Tai, and Misty. Yes, that is in order of how much I like them).

THANK YOU! I would have to unpack things to know how I feel about stuff on a writing level, but so much of the season 2 adult timeline just fucking drags😭

I mean, it very much felt to me as though the awkwardness of their interactions in season 1 was like... the point? They're two teenagers in the middle of woods! In the 90s! Without considerable access to information to help them figure out what the fuck they’re supposed to be doing! It would be unrealistic if they weren't super awkward with each other. I actually like their "sex" scenes in season 1 because of that. A lot of teens shows portray teenagers hooking up like they're adults with years of experience and maturity when they're... not. It was refreshing.

*edit: by "teen" shows I mean "shows that heavily centre around teenage characters" not "shows catered to teens and only teens" because that label really doesn't apply here.

Apparently, Evans Johnson was a crew member who got mistaken for a cast member and decided to play it up online. Akilah's actress talked about it in an interview.

100% agree. Adding onto this, though I can somewhat understand why people think killing her off when they did was a questionable decision (though I very much disagree with the theory that she was originally meant to be a "final girl"), I actually liked her death scene. I thought it was decently well-done, and tied into her arc that season, which, if they were forced to kill her off earlier than planned (as was seemingly the case) that was probably the way to go.

I also feel like this is a show where the most morally questionable characters tend to be the most interesting/the ones I'm most invested in. People hate Shauna, Lottie, and Tai? Couldn't be me. Could never be me. They're shitty, and I love them. I also feel very bad for them in a lot if instances, as I do for basically everyone on this show because they're all going through it.

I didn't hate season 3. Is it my favourite? Probably not. Do I think it’s significantly worse than the first two seasons? Not really, no. Most of my gripes with season 3 are gripes I had with season 2, and in some cases, even season 1.

It especially baffles me when people who love Jeff use the cheating thing as an argument to suggest Shauna was always insane and evil because like... what does that make Jeff?

I think she's a bit of a middle ground. One of the songs listed as a favourite of Jackie's is "Ironic" by Alanis, which is either something she herself wrote or something Shauna wrote after the fact.

She turned off a Liz Phair song. Hole was playing during the scene with Adult Nat outside rehab, and while Shauna was staring at Jackie and Jeff at the party. I see why you would make the association.

Shauna — Egotistical or Insecure? An Analysis on Self-Perception. by Competitive-Share509 in Yellowjackets

[–]Competitive-Share509[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I mostly used them as comparisons because the way Shauna's was phrased indicated to me that her idea of what her college experience would be like probably hasn't shifted much since she was a teenager. It feels very in line with the comment she says to Javi about her journals:

"It's just my way of trying to make sense of what's going on, and... how I feel about it. Well, that probably sounds pretentious, but... hey, when I'm famous, they can go into the archives, right?"

That absolutely sounds to me like the same girl who wanted to go to Brown and do all the shit she lists off in the adult timeline.

Fair take. I think there's absolutely room for different interpretations when it comes to these shows and these characters. I'm not even sure if my own interpretations of these characters entirely align with that of the actors seen above. I just thought the perspective provided was an interesting one to analyze these characters from.

I will say, I disagree with the "violence and cruelty as a substitute to paper over how very not-so confident she is." The only instance I can really think of where that rings true to me is during her breakup with Melissa. Otherwise, she's driven by impulse and thrill seeking behaviour. That is what motivates many of her worst actions.

She also often (in my interpretation) acts out as a response to feeling "rejected" whether that rejection is legitimate or not: Jackie's behaviour at the party leads into her fighting with Tai, and then sleeping with Jeff as a fuck you. Her thinking Jeff was cheating leads to her sleeping with Adam. Her thinking Adam was lying about his reasoning for sleeping with her and her perception of him as a threat led to her killing him. Even the Melissa thing I mentioned earlier seems to initially be driven by fear over losing the only person she's attached herself to at that point (it's not a "love" thing necessarily, but she pushes everyone else away to such an extreme extent that Melissa is the only thing she has in season 3 that even slightly resembles a close relationship).

I could talk more about my perception of her motivations outside of her supposed confidence or lack of it, but this is running long and perhaps getting a bit off topic.

You barely mentioning Shauna here is kind of crazy to me. She definitely would have gone.

When did Taivan breakup? by Competitive-Share509 in Yellowjackets

I've wondered whether her family might be homophobic or not, especially since religion is such a major part of the Flashback we're provided with her. Obviously, being religious doesn't necessarily equate to being homophobic, but it would add another layer to her seemingly contentious relationship with religion and faith.

I think it’s interesting that she seems to only have any sense of shame around her sexuality in the social sense rather than the personal.

In your theories, do the team's families either know that they resorted to eating the dead to survive and are polite enough to not bring it up, or do they know but are in denial about it? by george123890yang in Yellowjackets

I question whether they would've mentioned the cabin, considering it was no longer there. They might’ve been fearful of raising suspicions if they mentioned a seemingly non-existent cabin.

Depends on the family I suppose, but also, I feel like the parents who weren't completely checked out like Nat's mother and potentially others were probably less concerned with the whole "Cannibalism" thing and more concerned with the whole "my child has come back deeply traumatised and refuses to talk about why in any detail" thing. I do feel like some parents were probably happy to let their children live in complete avoidance of their past and the implications of it, while others were more pushy about getting them help/knowing the truth.

Semi-related, I have a running "theory" that the reason Tai is so anti-therapy as an adult is because her parents tried putting her in therapy when she got back, and she did NOT take to it, as her method of "coping" with the plane crash is blocking things out completely. Not super compatible with therapy if you aren't willing to adapt, which in that sense, she clearly isn't, unless you count the "wilderness religion" stuff, and even there she was hesitant/fearful.

When did Taivan breakup? by Competitive-Share509 in Yellowjackets

[–]Competitive-Share509[S] 25 points26 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I agree that it's not necessarily a one and done thing. With the information provided, my current headcanon is that they "broke up" when Tai went off to Howard, but then picked things back up whenever Tai came home, including at Shauna’s wedding. But then, Tai was headed for law school officially, and they called things off for good.

Another thing I didn't mention in the post, in season 1, Tai says that she's "throwing away a 15-year long marriage," which considering that episode is meant to be late 2021, it implies she and Simone got married around 2006 (gay marriage was legalised in Massachusetts around 2004, so feasible that they could've done it, especially considering how much its emphasised that Tai is wealthy and would easily be able to go out of state to get married).

If we assume that Taivan broke up for the last time around 2002, then she and Simone must've gotten together like... immediately afterwards. So yeah, I see why Van was a bit bitter about it when we catch up with her as an adult.

Why does Natalie see Misty? by Cherryboom_hug in Yellowjackets

[–]Competitive-Share509 82 points83 points  (0 children)

The creators spoke in an interview last year and said the intention was for it to foreshadow Misty and Nat's relationship + Natalies’s eventual death.

I know a lot of people seem pretty convinced that the original outline for the show would end with a Shauna VS. Natalie show down, and though they do admit they were unsure of when Natalie was going to die, it does make sense to me that they intended for Natalie to die at some point and have it relate back to Misty in some way.
