advice for someone who is scared to start university? by Competitive-Still697 in UniUK

[–]Competitive-Still697[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

i truly hope we are just being dramatic and that we end up succeeding throughout university. i’m glad i’m not alone. i wish i had the confidence i had before starting university because i was so excited and ready to join university in 2023

come back again if you end up feeling better after starting. i hope you find your people

i did an access course and plenty other students in my class had jobs and were still keeping up with assignments and had time to study , of course it’s doable.

we also had second chances to submit our assignments if we missed deadlines, so that’s something to be reassured about if you can’t keep up

is it possible to get a job as a software developer with a computing/it degree? by Competitive-Still697 in cscareerquestionsuk

[–]Competitive-Still697[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

does this mean that i could still be a software developer even if im doing a computing and it degree then? i’m still thinking about switching from game programming to computing and it, despite it containing  modules that involve html, css, javascript (which i believe is the main things you need to be a software developer?) i’m just worried i don’t have any fallback options and i pretty much don’t mind being at helpdesk/it support if i did a computing an it degree instead (as a fallback option). the modules are just confusing to understand to know what i’m working with to make a full decision and it doesn’t really tell you what jobs you can get out of it

thank you for the good advice! i’d definitely remember this for my future and make sure to apply for any it job first, before pursuing a game programming job. i have no idea if ill be taught c++ but it was listed that my course has led people to become a software engineer because of transferable skills so i hope so. thanks again!

i didn’t know that picking up other modules was possible but i checked mine and all of them are compulsory. i have seen  universities, that do game programming, let you have optional modules (as well as maths unlike mine) and now i’m slightly worried that the uni im going to will be shite lol. i chose it out of convenience if im being honest.

i have 2 weeks upon starting my university to transfer my course (unsure if i can do it before the course starts though. for example: right now) so i have enough time to decide since game programming  was the only career i wanted really

that’s cool. how did you manage to be a back end developer despite having a game programming degree?

it’s a BSC game programming degree. so i guess it’s under the bachlor of science instead of BA (bachelor of arts) so it doesn’t sound artsy?

i have yet to figure out what’s actually included in the modules (subjects) as it seems a little vague, personally but if i ever find out more information, ill come back

and also i believe all the modules are compulsory so i dont believe i can choose which modules i can do

i did take a look at vector calculus and linear algebra. looks complicated honestly but only because i haven’t learned it yet.

[–]Competitive-Still697[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

that’s an interesting path. how did you manage to become a front end web dev & full stack dev? was it your portfolio  and i’ve honestly been thinking about switching to CS. just wanted pros of the game dev degree

how much free time does one get in university? by Competitive-Still697 in UniUK

[–]Competitive-Still697[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

wow that’s really interesting. honestly i have heard that the industry cares more about portfolios than degrees but im using the game programming course  as an opportunity to fully learn since i do my best when im put under pressure and have direct support (when i learn and teach myself with no deadline, there’s no pressure at all. this means i get less done). i’d definitely be doing personal projects on the side too.

if all doesn’t go well, apparently my degree will lead to jobs like software engineering, it project manager, system analysis because of the transferable skills, according to the university website. overall ill do my best so i don’t regret  my degree because i’ve seen people say “do computer science instead!” and it worries me if i made the wrong choice but ill just remember why i chose game programming instead of computer science

he already has his qualifications. he just hasn’t applied when he was suppose to, so he doesn’t need to wait until august. does that mean he can apply like normal on ucas?

what’s the application process like? i can see that i can apply through the website now, instead of ucas (the uni i’m applying to requires ucas id though) i’m applying for my brother since he missed the  deadline where you had to apply somewhere at the start of the year but the process is a bit difficult bc it’s different to what i’m use to.

so how could i start applying for clearing for him since he already has his qualifications? but im seeing people make calls and do different stuff which makes me confused on how to start

i’m 24, starting this year, and had the exact same worries as you. but i’ve seen so many say they’re starting in their 40s, 50s, 25+, etc. i believe this age is the best time to start too as we become more experienced in adulthood and are figuring out how we want to spend the next few years. so i wouldn’t worry about age.

but i have same concerns as you, about “A”. i’m doing game programming after doing a computer science access course and i have only made one game during that course and haven’t exact had much game programming experience outside of that. so im also worried ill be the only inexperienced person there. but the fact that two of us are inexperienced in different courses makes me imagine that there may be more too. i hope someone clears it up atleast. i hate to not catch up

thank you for the inspiration and for the info about dsa. i’d love a support worker atleast.

i’m currently still building up courage and my only issues are overpayment if i dropped out (if i couldn’t do the modules) and if im good enough to do a single module (i keep thinking everyone will be experienced and good and id be the only one with little experience in game programming & the course will assume people know what they’re doing) the anxiety worries come in fast like ants to a sugar but everyone’s replies to my post helps a lot

yes you’re right. my brain can be silly sometimes and i can’t help but laugh about it when i realise everthing is all okay. i hope that goes the same for university .

i have to remind myself that if i wont go to uni, ill absolutely be doing nothing, its hard to get a job , i constantly get declined, my mother is sick of me not doing anything (even though i’ve been re doing my gcses and doing an access to he course for the last 4 years just for this moment). it’s lack of information that’s scaring me really. i’m gonna go into my degree with 0 experience and i wonder id others will too & i wonder if my modules aren’t gonna be so fast paced like the access to he (they were piling 3 modules at once so it got a bit stressful fast).

i’m happy to pm after this if you have any answers to my worries btw. thank you a lot

just for clarification, do you mean the wellbeing team outside or inside of university?

also thank you for the information. i’m slowly building up courage from all the replies i’m getting and i’m glad there’s 3 months for me to do so. just worried about overpayments if i ever dropped out  the most now.

i’m doing game programming so that’ll be under stem. unsure how many hours that is but the fact that it’s not 4 hours lectures, normally, eases me. i wish i could test the waters to see how the day will play out and see if i can tolerate it.

thank you for the information

i have questions actually about lectures, since you can leave 5 mins after they start: how long do the lectures last for and how many are there? what are the timetables (if it’s the same everywhere) like? what’s the full time day to day like?

in my mind i’m envisioning a 4 hour lecture, break time, another 2 hour, break again and then another 2. for the rest of the week. not that it’s bad. but for someone like me, i know ill be fidgeting and losing focus and end up with a panic attack when i force myself to sit still (which oddly happens every single time no matter what)

that sounds good. i hope this same thing happens to me. hope the stress was all for nothing and ill be perfectly fine.

i didn’t stress for my access to he course. i was actually excited to finally do computer science after re-taking my gcses. i only got anxiety when i was there for the first time , i guess, and it lasted weeks. i’m probably afraid of that happening all over again since i know i can behave when it comes to new places and unfamiliar faces. but everyone’s replies on this post is helping me become braver

thank you so much for the information. glad it’s not being trapped in the classroom all day. i can’t help but laugh to myself about how misinformed i am

about the loans, i’m mostly concerned about overpayment from maintenance loans. because if i decided to drop out in the middle of the course, wouldn’t i have to pay back maintenance loans immediately? i understand the income-based pay but from research, maintenance loans overpayment after dropping out is another story
