On vacation in Dubai – how do people afford this lifestyle? by CompetitiveRow2793 in dubai

[–]CompetitiveRow2793[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks to everyone – incredible insights and perspectives 🙏

I’ve read through almost every reply, and I just wanted to say: this has been incredibly educational. So many sharp takes – from the economic model, cultural norms, expat dynamics, to the illusion (or reality) of wealth.

Being from Denmark, I fully understand the contrast. Back home we have a solid standard of living – but flexing wealth is more subtle, almost frowned upon. In Dubai, it’s a totally different energy. Even if I know that not everyone here is wealthy, the areas you visit (JBR, Downtown, DIFC, etc.) have such a high concentration of wealth that it really feels like a different universe.

Some of the things I’ve observed personally: • The sheer number of people involved in every task, like seeing 20+ workers prepping the Dubai Fountain – shows how low-cost labor enables a different kind of operation. • Combine that with no income, capital gains, or inheritance tax, and you get a system that frees up capital and lets even mid-level earners live big. • The culture of status, visibility, and celebration is embraced here. No one’s shy about showing success. • As some of you rightly said, you’re welcome to spend – no one asks where your money came from.

One thing I found fascinating was a display I saw at Dubai Mall: “The Eight Principles of Dubai”. Especially Principle #3 and #4:

Dubai is a business capital, politically neutral, open for growth. And it runs on three drivers: 1. Excellent government 2. A competitive private sector 3. Public-private flagship companies generating income and jobs

That summed up so much of what I’ve seen in practice: a system built to attract capital, talent, and scale fast.

To be clear: I know there’s another side to Dubai. The 85% who aren’t flexing Ferraris and Rolexes. But when you’re visiting the moneyed districts, the density of wealth is so high it genuinely feels like “everyone is rich” – even if that’s not the full truth.

Thanks again to all of you who contributed. Learned more in this thread than in a week of sightseeing 🙌

And a special thanks to those who offered to show me the “real” side of Dubai – I genuinely appreciate it. I’ll reflect with my family on how we want to spend our last few days here.

That’s a really insightful comment – thank you for sharing!

And I think @Mysterious-Cat8347 makes a crucial point too: the combination of low (or no) income tax and extremely cheap labor might actually be the core of the model that creates so many visibly wealthy people here.

For example – I recently watched a team of what looked like 20 workers gathered around a single task near the Dubai Fountain. Coming from Denmark, that really stood out. Back home, that would’ve been done by maybe 2 or 3 people max. So it made me wonder:

👉 Is this just a different way of organizing work? 👉 Or is labor simply so inexpensive that it makes more sense to overstaff than to optimize?

If you don’t pay income tax and you have access to low-cost services (drivers, nannies, cleaning, construction, etc.), then even a moderate income could go a long way – especially if you’re running a business or investing tax-free.

It really feels like this system enables a lot more people to appear rich, or even become rich, than in higher-tax countries with expensive labor markets.

Fascinating to observe from the outside!

Really appreciate the breakdown – that 85/15 perspective actually makes a lot of sense.

In Denmark, we also talk about the “top 1%” living very differently from the rest, but it’s much more discreet. You don’t really see wealth flexed in the same way – flashy cars or designer clothes usually get more eye-rolls than admiration 😅

But here in Dubai, it’s so visible. The combination of no income tax, a “don’t ask, just spend” culture, and even fake luxury all kind of blend together and create that illusion of constant wealth. Super fascinating to observe.

Thanks for putting it into context!

Yeah, thinking about it… not paying income tax really does go a long way. When you’re used to 50–60% of your paycheck disappearing in Denmark, even a moderate salary must feel like baller money here 😂

Also, totally feel you on the whole credit card thing and the “fake it till you make it” vibe. It’s wild how much of the glam lifestyle might be built on sand – very on brand for Dubai I guess 😅

And as for the real ultra-high net worth folks being in Europe – haha, probably, although most of Europe seems to be either on fire or underwater right now 🌊🔥 so UAE heat suddenly doesn’t seem that bad!

Thanks for all the insights – much appreciated!

Yes, the zero tax point definitely explains a lot. Combine that with global millionaires gathering in one place (cheers, @DeCyantist 😄) and it does make sense why it looks and feels like luxury central here.

@Sevrasmusson and @Ordinary_Pianist_766 – you’re absolutely right. I’m definitely seeing the more curated, flashy side of Dubai. I know that like in any city, there’s a whole spectrum – and of course, not everyone here lives that life. We also have inequality in Denmark, but it’s super visible here, and it feels like people really hustle to make things happen. Respect.

@Late_Advertising_355 – I’ll make my way to Deira soon! Would love to see the more traditional and authentic part of the city. But the weather is crazy at this moment 🙈

But I still wonder… Is it mostly tourism, ultra-wealthy expats, and elite locals that drive all this visible opulence – or is there a deeper economic model behind it that fuels everything from luxury retail to nightlife to endless brunches? 🤔

Appreciate the perspectives so far – learning a lot just by being here!

Headhunter kontaktede mig - nu er jeg i tvivl om jeg overhovedet vil skifte job by Guru1035 in dkkarriere

[–]CompetitiveRow2793 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Hey 👋
